Dear all Tkank you for your welcome!

You can see pictures at my flickr or web site!

I have been doing  workshops "Art Making W/ Condoms".

These has been a wonderful experience where the participants have the opportunity to discuss sexuality, relationships, art, culture, taboos and prejudices around HIV/AIDS Prevention themes.

In the workshop the participants create art pieces with condoms giving them the experience to touch, feel and handle the condoms with naturalness and without fear, and the results have been amazing.

The participant becomes so wrapped up and enthusiastic that without any effort he involves family, friends and the community multiplying the awareness of the importance to use condoms.

Please read the workshop's proposal on this link and let me know what you think about it.

https://share.acrobat.com/adc/document.do?docid=d4accb09-551a-49be-8b09-056db73d64ec

I have availability to travel taking this project and to make future partnerships.

Please feel free to ask me anything, re-adapt the workshop for your convenience and divulge for your partners.

Thank you for your time and attention.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Kristen and everyone else new to D4Y,

Welcome to the Deliver for Youth (D4Y) list-serve!

It is good to know White Ribbon Alliance shares the goals of D4Y, and we are all eager to find ways to work together.  Kristin's message reminded us that we have a lot of new members of the list, 75 to date, and wanted to take this opportunity to explain what it is and what is happening over at FCI.

This list grew out of the Youth Advocacy Working Group at the Women Deliver conference in London last October: www.womendeliver.org.  As part of the D4Y project, this list serve is the place to learn and share information about youth advocacy and maternal health, especially as they link in with broader issues and movements in health, rights, development, and social justice, especially for women and girls.

FCI currently coordinates the list, and sends a monthly bulletin with member news and resources.  Importantly, we have decided to phase out this yahoo groups list-serve and rely solely on the e-mail list-serve of which you are all already subscribed. You will be receiving the next monthly bulletin at the end of this week.  If you have any news, updates, stories to add to the next bulletin, please send them to Naomi, nsorkin@..., by this Thursday, March 6, 2008.

The list itself is unmoderated, and we only ask that people be respectful and tolerant.

Over at Family Care International, the organizing partner for the Women Deliver conference and the on-going initiative, we have been developing a global and country-level advocacy project that includes a mapping component.  Like Kristen, we  would like to know - where are the young people within the maternal health movement?  And how to we help facilitate meaningful youth participation?

We are endeavoring to work with young people to create tools to advocate effectively about maternal health issues and simultaneously working with the maternal health community to infuse their work with the voices and experiences of young people and focus on investing in young people as a crucial component of maternal health.  To this end, we have been consulting with advocates within and outside this group and have submitted abstracts to the AWID conference and the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City for workshops to further explore this.  We plan to build on the materials created at WD and generate powerful messages that better link young people to the maternal health community.

All of this work has been and will continue to be guided by the Deliver for Youth Advisory Group, comprised of members from the youth advocacy working group at Women Deliver representing organizations including Youth Coalition, Advocates for Youth, and UNFPA.  We have not yet formalized the terms of this group and welcome new members.  Please write Naomi directly if you are interested.  We would like to convene a meeting of this group this summer so please consider this as a possibility.

To review prior messages on this list-serve, please write Naomi directly nsorkin@....  They include many calls for assistance similar to Kristin's message; we appreciate the opportunity to reiterate them now.

All of the best,

Naomi and Vanessa

Hi all,

It was a pleasure to meet you all in London, to hear your
stories and to learn about the exciting work that you are doing. I am
glad that we have created this forum and the youth newsletter so that
we can continue to follow these efforts.
I am currently working with the White Ribbon Alliance for
Safe Motherhood at their global secretariat in Washington, D.C. For
the next few months, I will be working to develop a three year plan
for youth engagement. My job is to try to understand the role of
youth in the maternal health campaign and to design a structure that
will best support youth involvement. As you can imagine, this is a
bit of an overwhelming task, there are so many strategies for
involvement and so many projects already underway.
I am writing to all of you today because I think you could be
of tremendous assistance. I spoke with a number of you at the Women
Deliver conference and asked you the very question, "what do you
believe is the role of youth in this campaign? How should youth be
involved?" and your answers have given me a better understanding of
the overall youth perspective. Your stories, work and insight proved
how valuable youth are in this campaign. I am currently in the
process of working through the foundational concepts of this campaign
and researching current strategies and best practices. I would love
to hear more feedback and gather more information from anyone who
would be willing.
The strategy that I am working on will incorporate inter-
generational and inter-cultural partnerships. We want to harness the
strength of youth to youth campaigns, but we want to involve youth
from around the world, not just those in countries with the highest
rates of maternal mortality. We want this model to serve as a example
of the global commitment that will be necessary to make motherhood
safe for every woman. But we want this to be more than a youth to
youth campaign. One thing that I think a number of youth echoed at
the Women Deliver conference was the idea that "you can train the
voice to speak, but you must also train the ears to listen". I think
that it is important to incorporate intergenerational partnerships,
while preserving the strengths of youth to youth campaigns, because
in the end, youth need the support of their community.
I know this posting is a bit vague, but I thought I would at
least open up the idea for discussion and see what sort of interest
there may be and what ideas some of you may have. I would love to
hear people's thoughts and comments on this. Also, if anyone has any
additional information that you think may be useful to me, such as,
information on best practices or current strategies, I would really
appreciate it. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks!

Only Words?

By Rupert Walder

Created Nov 16 2007 - 8:15am

Language has always been an essential agenda in sexual and reproductive health 1 and rights, not least of all because the Cairo and Beijing agendas were so language driven. At these two conferences, the all-important switch was made from "family planning 2" to "sexual and reproductive health and rights." Politically, this development was vital. Semantically, it provided new scope, and not necessarily for the better. (Others on this site - including Malika Sadaa Saar 3 and Gloria Feldt 4 - have written about the resonance of the right and wrong language in current discourse around sexual and reproductive health and rights.)

Writing about the recent Women Deliver and the Global Safe Abortion conferences in London, Beth Frederick 5 concluded that we need to be on the lookout for policy makers who "forget or ignore" the relevant agendas. In terms of language, I think there is an important third here: don't understand.

It did strike me at Women Deliver that some participants - including detractors - were using a language that just doesn't mean very much to anyone other than the converted and the unconvertible. In our efforts to articulate the quiddity - the essence, the correctness, the validity - of our arguments, we are confusing policy makers and the media and other prospective supporters. If Cairo was about winning language, then the following few decades seem to have been about complicating that language. And to such an extent that any decent journalist or civil servant or policy broker has switched off before we have got to the end of our second sentence.

We all know the reasons why we use such `complex' language: to push the agenda onwards and upwards; because we really, really (really?) need to explain the technicalities of our work; to claim the moral high ground; to impress; to discredit our detractors; to differentiate ourselves from our competitors. And the agenda and therefore language is always evolving, with new contraceptive regimes and technology, new political conquests, all of which need to be "explained."

But somewhere along the way, those of us who are promoting discussion about sexual and reproductive health and rights (snappy, huh?) seem to have become so involved, so committed, to our particular agendas, that we have stopped speaking English - or Spanish or French or Russian. With some notable exceptions, most of the briefings and reports at Women Deliver read like short, incomprehensible novellas.

There is also the polarization of our language on issues such as abortion and sex education. How on earth can we say what we really need to say on these issues without first ensuring that we have made it so very clear that we don't think this, and don't advocate that? It is too defensive, too contextualized for the outside world.

And the all important voice of "youth" has also been so sanitized that youth advocates sound like nascent civil servants rather than real young people. Do any normal young people ever really used the term "peer education," or "youth advocate" or even "reproductive health?" I doubt it.

There is also the polarization of our language on issues such as abortion and sex education. How on earth can we say what we really need to say on these issues without first ensuring that we have made it so very clear that we don't think this, and don't advocate that? It is too defensive, too contextualized for the outside world.

Women Deliver demanded that we reach out to new audiences. Let's not do it with language based on programs of action, vital as these documents remain. Let's do it with real words (and also images) that have life and resonance beyond our own particular offices and corridors and conferences.

Hi all,

Happy new year and I am glad to know that Naomi and Vanessa are okay - from your communication. Well l must say that I have been okay too - and still trying to change the world for my community after what I saw and learnt from the Women deliver Conference.

Its not easy at all as all delegates ought to know trying to change the views on women related issues that have been set and fixed by society even before I was borne. This is what I have discovered in after trying to deliver the point home about the way forward on abortion, Domestic violence and marital rape among others. Some people have even gone ahead and told me I was too libera yet these are matters that should be at the fore front of everyone's goals!! Just the world I live in and continue to try and change / reform. I am organizing workshops to discuss the same and the way forward because most of the issues  from  women deliver remain a challenge in my country with out the critical political will.

To all youth out there don't give up and strive to achieve your dreams, goals and objectives as I continue to seek out positive change in my community without stepping on lots of toes and ultimately maybe even losing my main source of income, well the struggle continues. I will be sending a list of other youth interested in participating.

Best regards,
Aishah

DELIVER FOR YOUTH! We want to hear from you!

Posted by: "naomisorkin" _   naomisorkin

Thu Jan 17, 2008 10:35 am (PST)

To the Young People of Women Deliver:

Happy New Year! Almost three months have passed since our monumental
convergence in London. We worked tirelessly to push youth issues into
the spotlight and asked that the nearly 2,000 leaders in attendance take
notice of our strengths, our vulnerabilities, and our absence in
policies and programming. We were bold and loud, and we were noticed.

As Brian Ackerman, International Policy Associate of Advocates for Youth
wrote after the conference, "I saw the most potential for action in
the youth. Women Deliver showed me more than anything else that if and
when maternal mortality is to be reduced substantially at a global level
it will be done…through a model of collective and equitable support,
a new model of global development that is defined most purely by those
who know the new world best: its youth."

Young people contributed advocacy strategies and tools, research, and
first-hand experiences in what young people need and want to support
good sexual decision making. At the Deliver for Youth Commitments Desk,
we collected 83 commitments for meaningful youth inclusion and
participation from decision-makers across the globe. With these
commitments in hand, we can take the next step in this campaign for
young people's maternal and reproductive health and rights. We will
be posting highlights from these commitments on a new post-conference
youth section of the Women Deliver website—we will send an alert as
soon as the new site is live.

For now, we want to hear from you! Visit www.womendeliver.com
<http://www.womendeliver.com/> now to share your experience at Women
Deliver and how this landmark event is influencing your work. Send your
stories and photos from the event to info@womendeliver.org
<mailto:info@womendeliver.org> and fill out a conference evaluation
form if you did not fill one out at the conference.

We look forward to working with you in 2008 to advocate for maternal
health and other sexual and reproductive rights in the wake of Women
Deliver. Family Care International is committed to maintaining the
Deliver for Youth (D4Y) campaign to work with young advocates to make
the most of up-coming strategic opportunities to link maternal health
and youth issues. The new website and this list-serve will carry news
and advocacy materials for upcoming events including the UN Commission
on the Status of Women on February 25-March 5, 2008 and the
International AIDS Conference in Mexico in August 2008. We are excited
about continued collaboration, and if you know of other young advocates
anywhere in the world who would be interested in participating, please
invite them to join this list by emailing vbrocato@fcimail.org.

We'll be in touch soon!

All the best,

Naomi and Vanessa

Young people contributed advocacy strategies and tools, research, and first-hand experiences in what young people need and want to support good sexual decision making.  At the Deliver for Youth Commitments Desk, we collected 83 commitments for meaningful youth inclusion and participation from decision-makers across the globe.  With these commitments in hand, we can take the next step in this campaign for young people's maternal and reproductive health and rights.  We will be posting highlights from these commitments on a new post-conference youth section of the Women Deliver website—we will send an alert as soon as the new site is live.

For now, we want to hear from you!  Visit www.womendeliver.com now to share your experience at Women Deliver and how this landmark event is influencing your work.  Send your stories and photos from the event to info@... and fill out a conference evaluation form if you did not fill one out at the conference.

We look forward to working with you in 2008 to advocate for maternal health and other sexual and reproductive rights in the wake of Women Deliver.  Family Care International is committed to maintaining the Deliver for Youth (D4Y) campaign to work with young advocates to make the most of up-coming strategic opportunities to link maternal health and youth issues.  The new website and this list-serve will carry news and advocacy materials for upcoming events including the UN Commission on the Status of Women on February 25-March 5, 2008 and the International AIDS Conference in Mexico in August 2008.  We are excited about continued collaboration, and if you know of other young advocates anywhere in the world who would be interested in participating, please invite them to join this list by emailing vbrocato@....

                                                                                    We'll be in touch soon!

                                                                                    All the best,

Naomi and Vanessa

Dear WOMEN DELIVER participants,

I am glad to be part of this e-discussion. I think it is an
opportunity for all of us to share experience, news, and initiatives
on women empowerment.

For my part, I am going to share you the recent visit of the UNFPA
Africa Division Director in Madagascar. In fact, Mrs Fama Hane Ba
came to Madagascar to see how UNFPA's work in this country is going
on and to advocate for women and youth empowerment. Thus, she had
meeting with UNFPA implementing partners. She has noticed how
different it is to be on field, to know more about the impact of
UNFPA work, to see what is missing… Apart from the UNFPA Partners,
she had the great opportunity to meet the Head of state, Marc
Ravalomanana. During this meeting, she could advocate for women
empowerment. Their meeting has resulted to the organization of
Malagasy women summit that will be the first event of this kind in my
country. The number of women parliamentarians has decreased, not too
many women are involved in policy in Madagascar. However, we all know
that at some point, there is a need to have women leaders so that
their peers can be more empowered. I think this Malagasy women Summit
is a great opportunity for Malagasy women to get more involved in the
development of our country. Since UNFPA's mandate is focus on
population development, gender and reproductive health, the summit
will also address reproductive issues in Madagascar.
This is one of many other examples of how women can be empowered. I
encourage all of you, in your respective activities, to advocate for
other young girls, women, for their empowerment.

Best regards
Marie Sandra RAMONJISON
Associate Expert on Youth programming
UNFPA Madagascar

WRITE FOR THE CHANGES THAT CAN SAVE OUR LIVES

The WOMEN DELIVER conference provides a critical opportunity for you to advocate on the health and rights issues that threaten young people's well-being that– if addressed- can lead to a better future for us all.  The conference is being held at the London ExCel Center from October 18th -20th (see www.womendeliver.org). Representatives of more than 90 countries will be gathered to educate and advocate for investing in women's health and rights as necessary for development.

One-third of the world's population, approximately 1.7 billion people, are between the ages of 10 and 24 years.  Every year, some 14 million adolescent girls (15-19) give birth.  Complications from pregnancy, childbirth, and unsafe abortion are the major causes of death and injury for these young women.  In addition, young people between 15-24 years old have the highest infection rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

WOMEN DELIVER will generate dialogue on some of the most effective solutions to these problems and show what we need to do to end this tragedy.  At this landmark event, young people will make their voices heard.  We invite you to be one of these voices: we are seeking talented writers from across the globe to write for blogs and other on-line media, university newspapers, and other local media outlets.  We encourage you to be in touch directly with on-line and local media outlets and offer to write about these issues during the conference.  We also are in touch with media outlets seeking writers.

For those of you attending WOMEN DELIVER, articles about sessions and happenings at the conference as well as articles about what is left out that you wish had been there are both important means of sharing the conference with the world.  Ask yourself: what is being said and what is being left out of the discussion?

For those of you following WOMEN DELIVER from your home, articles about the issues covered by the conference are timely news items– particularly as they affect young people in your neighborhood or school or region or sub-region.

If you plan to or are interested in writing for an on-line or other media outlet, please let us know.  Send your name, contact information, short bio (100 words or less), any media outlets you may have arranged to submit stories to, and any tentative story ideas (no more than three).

Please send inquiries to nsorkin@...
