Hi Rebecca,

Congrats on passing your class!!  You just gave me a good idea on how to deal
with the bathroom issue in houses with narrow doors. My parents house has that
same situation.  Have you try does thing you can put on the door hinges? I have
seen them in catalogs.  Here in WI is cold and grey so we are really looking
forward to spring.  Great pictures!!!  Keep in touch.

Don't know why , but pics didn't show on my email, can you send them to me?? The
bathroom thing can really be a problem, so far every place I have lived I have
been able to get in and out of bathroom, maybe because older homes, who knows. I
do know when we use to go on vacation, the bathroom always seem to be a problem.
Well would write more , but trying to clean out sons old room, he's moving home
after being gone for 3 years. he and gf broke up and think he just needs time to
heal and where is a better place then at home with mom helping him, by the way
he is 24 , but still my baby. anybody got any tips on how he can get over a girl
that was really not good for him to start out with. Have a good day till later,
by the way our weather down here is 69  right now, suppose to hit high 70's, can
hardly wait for warm weather, by back has been killing me. Talk soon, later, T

cost much. We got them at a hardware store. We had to look around
different hardware stores inorder to find them, but they are a

Hey T!!! :)
How are you!? Loving the weather here!!! gosh a broken heart huh? really
tough! :( I have 10more years (hopefully) before my daughter will have a
bf......PRAYING it'll be longer than age 15yrs.....I remember my first broken
heart....was w/the guy for 3yrs!!! Very tough! I feel for him, I don't think
there is a way to really tell somebody that a person isn't right for them, just
a part of life....gotta be reminded that when one door closes another one opens,
and it is much easier to say that than to see it!
How did you all meet your spouses??? What was your first broken heart like??? In
2001, I moved to Las Cruces and started dating this guy Lee, the relationship
moved quickly and before we knew it we were engaged....lost my virginity to him,
and soon afterwards he said he wasn't 'ready' to be married he just wanted to
date, so i gave him his ring back....tried to make it work with just dating, but
I was also going to school (NMSU) plus it was my first time ever being away from
'home'.....it didn't work out.....With a mixture of these feelings, I caught the
next bus back to Carlsbad (home) and stayed home for about 2-3 weeks before
returning, of course it hurt me when it came to school......One night my friends
had all gone out and I had chose to stay in and mope...I ended up spending the
evening in a Yahoo chat room (back then they were not as bad as they are now
with all the bots), there was a sn that was similar to my x-Lee, so I decided
that i would
'mess' with him.....to make a long story short, it turned out to be my now
husband and his name is also Lee! LOL we've been together 7yr's and just got
married July 11, 2008......got married July 11, his birthday is July 12, and
mine is July 13th!!! Hey may as well get them all over with in a couple of days
instaed of spreading them out over a year huh? HaHa!!!
Yes Hotels are definetly a challenge when it comes to bathrooms....In Oct. 2008
we went to Albuquerque for a conference for work, to which we stayed at this
5-star hotel (courtesy of work) they put ALL the people in w/c's on the upper
floors!!! the blind, people they put in the lower floors! lol it was funny
afterwards....people don't THINK before they do!
Anyhow phone just rang, then its time to make dinner and get ready to do this

Hey,
It's hard what to tell him and what not to tell him, we treated this girl like
a member of our family, 3 years worth of love meant nothing to this girl. She
ended up telling him that she was falling out of love with him, WOW I know that
just about killed him. To top things off she didn't want to work, but after she
left him and moved to her sisters she got a job and went on with her life like
he was never in it. She also left behind a dog , that was hers, I already have a
inside dog and have just lost a 14 year , so no way do I want another one.
Anyway, he has alot to deal with and she just moved on, but I promised myself I
would stay out of it, but boy is it hard. My middle daughter got on myspace and
let his ex have it , cause she kept posting, finally single, so glad to be
single, on my own, well my daughter said enough was enough and told her what she
had been wanting to. I would love to do the same , but don't want to give her
the satisfaction of
knowing it bugs me that she hurt my son the way she did. Anyway, I think he
will be ok, he has gone out a couple of times, Mardi Gras just finished down
here so he went here and there. One problem he has is their friends seem to
think they need to tell him everything she is doing. Told him, that's because
she probably told them to, who knows. All I know is sure am glad am not in
dating world nowadays, LOL. I met my husband in 1976, 2 years after my accident,
he never looked at me as the girl that couldn't do this or that, so it was
great. Now I was married with a 3 year old at time of my accident and he just
dropped me at my moms when I came home on a weekend pass. What a jerk, he said
he couldn't live with me cause I could never have kids again, boy could I give
up some dirt on him, but will another time. But they say God doesn't punish with
a stick, and believe me it's true. Well dog crying to go out and need to fix
son's lunch for tomorrow, will be
back tomorrow, have a nice night.
Later, T

Hello!!!

Sorry it has been a while since I last wrote! These past couple of weeks
have been bitter-sweet. ....We did finally move....the apartment is great! Only
thing bad is the bathroom door is not wide enough for my w/c to go through so in
order to take a shower or w/e, i have to get on the floor and crawl in, then
husband has to lift me up......we have dealed with this though with other
houses...... one day when money falls outta the sky we'll be able to have a
house built! lol haha

I dont know if I told you all but i did pass my class with a C!!! Yeayyyy I
started my last class this past monday....only 8weeks left..... :)

How is everything on your side of the world???? Again my aplogies for the delay
in responding.. ...

Rebecca

p.s

my heres a pic of my daughter and me at the sidewalk of stars in CA.... :)

and then just one of my daughter

Hi,

I'm Laura and I'm new to the list. I'll sent an intro in a moment.

I'm still in the hospital and the inpatient beds are all equiped with
scales...would it not be possible to access one to get weighed? Alternatively,
what do people with other mobility problems do in this case?

Hi all,

I guess I should post an introduction. I'm Laura and I live in Edmonton,
Alberta. I just turned 31 and have been stuck in the hospital and away from my
two young daughters since March 15.

I guess I should say that I do not have an SCI. I have multiple sclerosis and
either my condition has evolved into the secondary-progressive form, or I have
TM. I went to the Emergency in March for pain-control for back spasms and
steroids and couldn't walk sincre I got there. I'm now waiting for a neuro-rehab
bed at the hospital next door.

I hope you guys don't mind me on the list...being essentially paralysed, I'm
hoping that this would be a good place to swap info...even from the rehab. Point
of view, it seems like I've already been lumped in there with the SCI crowd.

Hi Nicole.
That's great you are pregnant. I have one girl and she is wonderful and a
handful at the same time. I would never give up motherhood.
Two places I have found that I can be weighed are Weight Watchers (you can call
and ask if they have a wheelchair scale)and a local rehab. Both of these places
you are weighed in a chair. Just have to know the weight of the chair. I would
just go in and tell them my situation and see if they could weigh you for free.
I beleive that it does not hurt to ask.
I hope that this helps. Let us know how your pregnancy goes and what you have.

Greetings!

I have attached a few pictures from the marathon - where Monica is rollin'
and from Bobfest in Spring Green - where Bob was rockin' out.

It was a brutal and hard course. I had two vehicles and many pedestrians and
bikers on the course that were in the way and wouldn't move. Many turns were
unclear. I went the wrong direction once and my team mate missed a turn on a
loop.

However, all in all, it was a great ride!

See you at the races.

Congratulations Nicole,

Usually the put me on a special scale chair and all and when I transfer to the
examining table the weigh the chair.
After a quick subtraction of both numbers I get the dreadful total.

Keep in touch,

Liza

Hello to all you ladies,

Let me introduce myself. I was involved in a near fatal bicycling accident on
March 22, 2008 in which I sustained an incomplete C4 SCI and was paralyzed from
the neck down. I was living and working overseas and had to be medivaced back
to the states. My nickname in the hospital was the "Quad from Japan". The
prognosis was not good but 16 months later and a lot of blood, sweat and tears I
am now walking, functioning and living independently again. I do have residual
damage that I will live with until research catches up, bu all in all grateful
for the progress I have made and now my nickname with all the medical staff is
the "miracle quad from Japan".

Now I am going vent...please be patient with me. I really don't know what has
been more painful...the physical rehab or the bs I have been having to go
through lately with finances. I went through all of my savings and state
disability insurance and was now forced to request hardship money out of my
401k. This is a nightmare! I had to actually be involved in an eviction process
with my landlord to claim hardship, per the IRS regulations. The eviction went
through within 48 hours after it was initiated and a judgement was made against
me. The sheriff were scheduled to come out and lock me out of my apartment next
Tuesday. I finally got the hardship approved and the monies FEDX'ed to me, with
nly a few days to spare. Though the eviction has been terminated the eviction
judgement stands on my credit report. So now not only am I fighting to regain my
physical life back...I now have to fight to clean up my credit. For anyone out
there thinking about accessing your 401k on a hardship....DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!

Oh! by the way... anyone thinking about taking out long-term disability
insurance...make sure you research the company and understand all the ins and
outs about their polices. My company sold me on taking out extra insurance
coverage with Cigna and they have not followed through with good faith
practice...meaning I haven't recieved the monies I paid to receive if ever
disabled.

Thanks for being here.

I agree with Liza. Thanks for sharing and you should share you story with
the news and bloggers. It is an example of some of the issues we have had to

Although you have more than your fair share of financial issues, many of us
are dealing with issues like this. I don't think enough people really
understand how some can be in such dire straights, and they did nothing

Subject: [Women with SCI] Re: New Member

Hello to all you ladies,

Let me introduce myself. I was involved in a near fatal bicycling accident
on March 22, 2008 in which I sustained an incomplete C4 SCI and was
paralyzed from the neck down. I was living and working overseas and had to
be medivaced back to the states. My nickname in the hospital was the "Quad
from Japan". The prognosis was not good but 16 months later and a lot of
blood, sweat and tears I am now walking, functioning and living
independently again. I do have residual damage that I will live with until
research catches up, bu all in all grateful for the progress I have made and
now my nickname with all the medical staff is the "miracle quad from Japan".

Now I am going vent...please be patient with me. I really don't know what
has been more painful...the physical rehab or the bs I have been having to
go through lately with finances. I went through all of my savings and state
disability insurance and was now forced to request hardship money out of my
401k. This is a nightmare! I had to actually be involved in an eviction
process with my landlord to claim hardship, per the IRS regulations. The
eviction went through within 48 hours after it was initiated and a judgement
was made against me. The sheriff were scheduled to come out and lock me out
of my apartment next Tuesday. I finally got the hardship approved and the
monies FEDX'ed to me, with nly a few days to spare. Though the eviction has
been terminated the eviction judgement stands on my credit report. So now
not only am I fighting to regain my physical life back...I now have to fight
to clean up my credit. For anyone out there thinking about accessing
your 401k on a hardship.... DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!

Oh! by the way... anyone thinking about taking out long-term disability
insurance... make sure you research the company and understand all the ins
and outs about their polices. My company sold me on taking out extra
insurance coverage with Cigna and they have not followed through with good
faith practice...meaning I haven't recieved the monies I paid to receive if
ever disabled.

Thanks for being here.

Liza...thanks for responding to my post. To answer your question…healthcare in
Japan is about equivalent to ours relative to technology. I did like their
bedside manner as the medical professional took their time to explain everything
even if this meant taking an hour or more out of their schedule to do this. The
only issue, and one that the USA should consider doing as well, is any
non-resident seeking medical services has to pay cash up front or no service.
You then have to submit a billing claim to your health insurance for
reimbursement. I believe that most insurance company's have a provision written
in their policy about overseas traveling and healthcare. Make sure you check
yours out before embarking on your trip. If you are thinking about living
overseas then I would consider getting an international insurance carrier like
Cigna International. I did not have any problems with them reimbursing me for
both services and medications.

The Japanese language is very difficult to learn. My hat is off to your son!

I want to return back overseas and am not sure if either the doctor is going to
co-sign this or the military folks will approve my return with the disability I
have. Everything is up in the air for now but I have been submitting resumes
anyway hoping I can get picked up again.

Monica…thanks for your response as well. I will check out the Ed Schultz's
website. I listened to him every night while living in Japan and liked him very
much.

Hi Maria,
I am sorry about what has happened. I am also in a wheelchair.  However I do not
feel confined.  I have just adjusted my life to this new obsticle.  When I was a
new injury I could not believe this was happening.  I wondered what I had done
to deserve this.  It took time to realize that I can not control other peoples
actions and mistakes.  I hope that you figure this out soon, because you will
have a wonderful life.  Even if it does not seem so right now.
This last weekend we had a big snow storm in the east where I live.  Well, we
did not get as much snow as the cape, so it was a great day for me.  I am a
single mom and have had to deal with this also.  My daughter and myself went out
to play in the snow. Our idea of playing is for me to get in my electric
wheelchair and pull Hannah around in the snow.  We went to Dunkin donuts and
around town.  That was our fun, me pulling Hannah around in my chair.  None of
her friends got to do this.
Well, please keep us updated on yourself.  Where are you in rehab?  Where are
you from?
Merry Christmas.
mary

Hi Maria,

Nice to meet you! Unfortunately, I'm also stuck in a chair and like you,
landed in the hospital fairly recently. I walked into the hospital in
mid-March with back spasms and within 24 hours, wasn't able to move
anything below T-10 Cause: Transverse Myelitis...a sort of non-traumatic
injury (not an accident) caused either by MS or by a virus (they still
aren't sure with me). I was discharged in July after 10 weeks in the
hospital and 6 weeks of rehab. I finally got *MY* chair 2 weeks
ago...yup! Takes that long for the government to get off their rears and
process the paperwork.

Life in a chair certainly sucks! I'm still in denial at times; I keep
thinking that it's all in my head and if I REALLY wanted to, I could walk.

Things are not all bad. Might be a fun idea to start a list of
advantages of being in a chair. Let me start!

1. Browsing for books at the bookstore is that much more relaxing.
Everyone has to stand and browse while you have your seat.
2. Nothing extra to carry during BYOC (bring your own chair) events such
as picnics or barbeques!
3. People jump out of your way when there are large crowds.

Anyone else care to join in?
