the prescriptions and dosage. A pharmacist will be far more

knowledgeable as to side effects or negative interactions with other

prescriptions or herbal supplements. If that doesn't give any insight,

then I think a visit to her cardiologist would be worthy of an

ultrasound followed by a CT scan of the heart. I hope this helps.

Is she pre diabetic? Does she get enuf complex carbs and protein divided in
the day? what time does the low b.s.happen? that could be a clue. Is she
anemic? Low hemoglobin which carries oxygen could play a role. My husband
gets vey sleepy and low heart rate and blood Pressure when his potassium is
low due to diuritics leaching out potasium from his body. Perhaps some blood
tests to check these.

hope these ideas lead you to an answer.

Hi, I'm taking care of my my mother C3/C4 complete and she keeps

running into problems with her blood pressure tanking. I've had to take

her to the hospital two times and she would have died if I hadn't, it

was 48/34 when she went unconcious. Also, low oxygen level and high

fever. Anyone on this site taking care of a loved one run into this

problem, if so, what caused it? Any info would be appreciated.

O my goodness moving is not fun! When we moved here we were only able to find a
1 br SMALL apt. soo we took it, (oh yeah did i mention we were renting from one
of my co-workers?) well, she and her dad (still lives at home) decided that they
wanted to turn our apt into a office for her, soooooooooo we had to be out by
Jan 3.....well that didn't happen so they gave me 30 days. Luckily I found
something, because our other option would have been moving back to Carlsbad,
living with my grandpa which would have ment loosing our jobs. Anyhow I guess
there is just no pleaseing the world huh? (not always anyhow) well the move was
def. for the better bcos the other apt didn't have no heater or ac (we had
electric heaters 2), and it was just a 1br. we had just moved from a 3br to a 1
br so the majority of our things were/are still n storage. My daughter had a
outdoors playhouse we had stacked our dining room table on top of it....yeah it
colapsed the roof!!! :(
This has been a major adjustment to the 3 of us, and I think for the first time
i am completely Happy! I mean life COULD be worse, but it's not..... :) I love
this group....feels like i have connections with all of you! :) I am in the
midst of a cold or sinus infection, I don't know the difference between the 2. I
do know that Nyquil does not make me sleep which is why i am up at 5am!! lol
hope all is going good for everybody looking forward to hearing back :)

Hi Theresa,

Great advice.  Now tell me when you were the mother of the bride/groom how did
that go.  I listen to music from the 70,80 and 90.  Since I am a former ballroom
dancer still like to build choreography's is my mind.

Hi All,
It sure is not the easiest thing to have a child and deal with all you have to
deal with just being in a chair. I think having my children taught me alot about
myself, never did I think I could deal with a baby and be in a chair. But it
really came natural, of course I had a 3 year old at the time of my accident, so
in a way bringing another child into our life was just a blessing. Of course
sure some thought I was completely nuts, haaaaaaaaaaa. Anyway my oldest was 9 at
the time I had my second, and not like she really helped, but just was easier
her being older. When my son was born 4 years later, I said okay that's enough
kids, cause actually I didn't even think of getting pregnant, don't ask why it
never cross my mind , cause I was having regular periods. Here's a good one for
ya'll , when my son was 4 months old he weighed 22 lbs, can you imagine picking
him up, haaaaa. Wouldn't have traded him for the world. I miss my babies being
babies, but I
do have 4 grankids who are my reason to go on. Bryce ,12, Grant ,7, Hannah, 10,
and Alexis 6. I don't think it ever crossed the minds of the kids that went to
school with my children as to why their mom was in a wheelchair cause most of
the kids knew me. We live in a very small town and most people know each other
or their family. Just like at my grandkids school, they go to the same school my
kids went to and not once has a child asked why was I in a chair. Some stare,
but I think my granddaughters have told some, oh, she was in a wreck and broke
her neck and when you do that you can't walk anymore. Kids will be kids and say
whatever comes to mind, so just like life whatever comes up, deal with it or
not. I choose to live my life day by day and have no regrets about anything, oh
one, am getting older, but actually would never want to be in the dating world
nowadays.
I'm not sure how to start this, so just will ask, What if any type of music
does everyone listen to?? Have to tell ya'll ,I am a die hard ROD STEWART fan
and go to as many of his concerts as I can. Hubby says he wish he would retire,
but told him, but then what would I do. If anyone has seen him in concert sure
they would agree with me that he puts on one great show. And of course he kicks
soccer balls out to the crowd, ( more on that later), and I am lucky enough to
have come home with 2 signed soccer balls by him. My grandkids always ask to
play with them, but no way will that happen. Hubby and son-in-law said when I
die they are going to sell them, I told them I wanted to be buried with them,
but they said I'll never know. Told them I will come back and haunt them if they
don't bury them with me. Ok girls, my back is killing me and almost time for
american idol, I don't usually watch all the way through, but like the early
shows to see who gets cut.
This has been great that this site finally has some action, keep it going girls,
looking forward to next letter. Take care and stay warm if it is cold where you
are.

Hi Rebecca,

OK,how did you handle your girl  and the grocery cart all by yourself?  My girls
friends often have questions regarding how I  do  things and they encourage them
to ask me.  They are very proud of all the things I can do and I also tell them
that this is an opportunity to teach other people.  I am not planning to have
more kids but will like to be an active grandma so thanks for the tips and
please keep them coming.  Because your girl is young this is a good time to
network with other parents, it becomes a little more difficult in middle school.
Be very proactive and volunteer as much as possible is her school.  They are

Hi Lisa!

My daughter is only 5yrs so hope that i can help you even just a little
bit..... :) OKay i admit having a baby and being n a w/c was not the easist
thing n the world! Until my daughter reached the stage where she could sit up on
her own, it was very difficult but i managed... :) when she reached the stage
where she could sit up on her own, i used one of those things that you use to
carry ur baby in u drap and fasten it on, then put the baby in it, it made it
easy and it was safe for both of us......I think toddlers know that you are in a
w/c i didn't really have a problem with her, of course there were the times that
she would run away from me n walmart, but i just had to be patient and teach her
that i could not run after her, and i had her hold on to the arm of my w/c which
she still does to this day.... I think the scareist thought for me (and maybe
cos we didn't have her in daycare much) was when i sent her off to school (head
start) wow that

was an emotional time! It was hard on me becuase the kids would ask her 'what
happend to your mommy", and i'd go home and cry...i contemplated the thought of
telling the kids myself but on thier terms that they can understand. however,
somebody once told me to leave her be and when shes ready she'll tell them, it's
her life and not to make my life into hers by forcing her to tell. i dont know
if anyone has ever heard of him but there is a song called "Walking on my
Wheels" by Dan Crow, it's for childern, its cute and says it in thier
terms...but again, i gotta let her do it herself. Of course when i went grocery
shopping w/my tot in tow, i'd get the mean glances but so what! i have EVERY
RIGHT to be at the store just the same as an 'abled bodied' person..... it would
be nice to hear from others on this:) sorry if i wasn't informative as i should
be..... i'll think back and see if i can pull some other tips from my mem. LOL
however through it all,

remember you can hug them, kiss them, and love them and you don't need legs for

Hi Rebecca,
I have been lucky that I have not had to move since my injury. I bought my first
home 13 months before my accident.  I have done so many renovations and have
made the house very accessible.  I have been in the cellar once but having
someone carry me down the STEEP, RICKETY stairs was too stressful.  Can get
everywhere else in the house.  Whether I chose to is another story. I figure
that when I do finally move I will sell the house with everything in it.  I can
not imagine packing up everything.
Like you my family does not live close by. They don't even live in the state. I
have made great friends who are really helpful when I need their help.    I do
miss my family and talk to my parents everyday.
Good luck unpacking.

If you can not get a regular appointment the go to the emergency room.  They can
not turn anyone back.  I will probably look into someone with special interest
is dystonia.  I have a friend that smokes occasionally and he swears by it, so
it that helps go for it.

PS please don't get burn or arrested!!!

I am really unable to go to a doctor right now but I just have a couple
of questions about my injury / condition that I would like to ask an
expert?
c4-7 replacement (10-19-06),post traumatic injury, with continued
parastesis(? ) (numbness) on right side from nipple down I am "turned
on" electrically 24/7 like when your butt goes to sleep and you try to

They are
always is need of helpers.  I learn this from one of my male mentors,  "never
hesitate to ask for help".

Like someone once said "To accomplish great things, we must not only act but
also dream, not only plan but also believe"

LOL
however through it all,
remember you can hug them, kiss them, and love them and you don't need legs for
that!!! :)

c4-7 replacement (10-19-06),post traumatic injury, with continued
parastesis(?) (numbness) on right side from nipple down I am "turned

Hi.

I am also the mother of daughters age 11 and a son 21.  Have being  in a wc for
three years and still learning.
Reading your stories have fill my day with enthusiasm I have so many questions.
How to take care of a toddler? How to handle the protocol of a weeding?  Did you
wait at the altar? ect.  It never stop to amaze me the determination that each
of us have and after all happiness is a choice that we make.  During this
journey I have met some very strong and tenacious people.  My friend Monica
reassure me that I could take care of my family and go in field trips and
continue to volunteer as I did prior to SCI.  My friend Jeff taught me that I
could be a coach.

Parenting is not only about what we can do physically but about how we can guide
this children.  For that ,what we need is a good head on our shoulders, patience
and lots of love.  None of those come from legs.  I am also getting to that
point were I am not the most beautiful and perfect person for my girls.  That
tell me that they are developing normally.  It is great to have company in the
fitting room and they are always willing to go shopping (especially it is for
them)

Since I went to collage single and healthy and became paralyze at 40 kudos to
all of you that have done so well and have had the courage  and guts to take on
life with such determination.

You are amazing!!!

Please tell me how to be a grandma in wheels and how to take care of babies.

Choose to have a great day!

Liza

Hi Mary,

What a coincidence! I had my eight year anniversary on Jan 22 of this year.
My sons were in 3rd and 6th grade at the time. My youngest doesn't remember
me walking either.

I was extremely involved with my sons' schools and activities. Now on son is
a Soph. in college and the other is in high school so they don't want me
meddling in their stuff any more.

In fact I went to the same movie theater that my son went to when he was
going with his friends. He was upset because he thought I was "chaperoning"
him. I said I was not even going to the same movie. I think he was
chaperoning us. :-)

Have a great day!

Hey Theresa! :)
wow what an incredible person you and your famly are!! It amazing the
questions that I (i'm sure 'we') are asked.... the funniest one i've heard of is
when my husband and i first got together, his co-workers would ask him "can she
have sex' lol When we go to a restaruant the waiters usually ask him what I
want, and he looks at them and says i dont know ask her! lol People can be
ignorant to the obvious to put it bluntly! Of course there were those who
thought i couldn't raise my daughter bcos of the w/c, It amazes them more when i
grocery shopping, clean the house, and all the other things that 'able bodied'
people do lol it baffles them! I have learned to laugh of course i'm not rude
and do it in front of thier faces .... lol
Anyhow, I am orgionally from Carlsbad, NM if you have heard of the Carlsbad
caverns, you know where it is... :) In july 08 we moved to Roswell, NM (where
the aliens are!! lol) I love it here, although it'd be nice to live in a place
like you do where you don't have to worry about locking the doors, but I guess
it could be worse! Albuquerque is worse...... :)

Oh and Mary..... :) I think I can wait for my daughter to be that age! Yeah I
remember doing the same to my grandma when i'd go to the movies wirth
friends.....of course once she let me go by myself (she drove) i didn't know she
had stayed in the car instead of go home, so my friends and i had the bright
idea to sneak out of the theater to meet boys in the back.....yeah you can
imagine how humiliating it was when my grandma pulled up to the back of the
theater demanding to know what we were doing, who the boys were, where they came
from..... lol even more humiliating when she not only told me to get into the
van but my friends to cos she was 'responsible' LOL NOW i can understand why she
did it, but at the time forget it i thought my life had ended!!! LOL

Hi to all,
Well guess I am a oldie here cause i have been a para since 1974, I was just
21, at that time I was married with a 3 year old daughter. To make it short he
couldn't handle the fact that I supposely wouldn't have anymore kids, but I
think it was due to me not walking and what comes along with dealing with all
that. But hey life went on, he did try to take my daughter from me cause he
didn't see how I could raise her, HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA . Two years after my
accident I met my now hubby who never once looked at my chair as a problem and
always treated my daughter great which was a plus for me. Well in 1980 we had a
daughter , 4 years later we had a son. My kids are all grown now and have all
grown up to be wonderful adults, my oldest is an LPN , my middle daughter is an
dental assistant, my son hangs steel. I also was always involved with my kids
while in school, I now have 4 wonderful grandkids who keep me going, 12, 10, 7,
and 6. I sometimes think my ex
did me a favor , cause if he hadn't left me I don't think I'd have the wonderful
life I do now. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in and hope we can get some people
talking on this group, would be great to share life stories and what each of us
has to deal with everyday. And where is everyone from??? I am from Louisiana,
deep south, rural small country town, we don't even lock our doors. Course just
hubby and I at home, HAAAA. Everyone have a nice night and lets chat.
Later, Theresa

It will be 9 years on november 20th.

Hannah is in the 5th grade and when we go to the movies she sits with her
friends in the front or back and only needs me if she wants pop corn or candy.
besides that i am chopped liver.  that is ok.  i think i did the same to my mom.

Hi to all,
Well guess I am a oldie here cause i have been a para since 1974, I was just
21, at that time I was married with a 3 year old daughter. To make it short he
couldn't handle the fact that I supposely wouldn't have anymore kids, but I
think it was due to me not walking and what comes along with dealing with all
that. But hey life went on, he did try to take my daughter from me cause he
didn't see how I could raise her, HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
I also was always involved with my kids
while in school, I now have 4 wonderful grandkids who keep me going, 12, 10, 7,
and 6. I sometimes think my ex
did me a favor , cause if he hadn't left me I don't think I'd have the
wonderful life I do now. Just wanted to put my 2 cents in and hope we can get
some people talking on this group, would be great to share life stories and what
each of us has to deal with everyday. And where is everyone from??? I am from
Louisiana, deep south, rural small country town, we don't even lock our doors.
Course just hubby and I at home, HAAAA. Everyone have a nice night and lets
chat.
Later, Theresa

 Hello!
How are you doing? Hope all is well! :) I ca'n definetly relate to you! :)
After being told my entire life that if I ever get pregnant, it would 'kill me'
by millions of dr's, I gave up hope. The year of 2003 was horrible for me, my
boyfriend at the time had been arrested, my cousin who was also my best friend
was found murdered and my grandma (who raised me after the accident) had been
diagnosed with Cancer. Therefore, i thought that i was missing my monthly
because of stress...Shortly after my boyfriend was released, my grandma told me
to go get tested, i laughed it off at first....but I did listen, and guess what
I was pregnant!!! I was so excited! I had my daughter in September and I
remember calling my grandma crying saying "she can move her legs" she said of
course did you think we lied to you?! (about the accident) I said no....it was a
shocker I don't know why. Then I thought well how am i going to teach her to
crawl? walk? and list went on
from there....my grandma set me down one day and told me that babies learn how
to walk and crawl on thier own, i was a little skeptical. In Nov. my grandma
passed away from cancer. Sure enough though, my daughter learned how to crawl
and walk on her own....now 5yr's later, she's walking, talking,
jumping...basiclly a 'normal' (and i dont like the word normal) 5yr old! There
are still times that I cry because there are things that I want to do with her
but can't. Such as Trick-or-treating or riding rides with her at Disneyland, but
then I realize that I'm LUCKY! Lucky to have her, lucky to be able to kiss,
hug, hold her, etc....be a mother to her...I have to focus on the things i can do
with her! :) It is nice to have family/friends/husband be able to do the things
that i can't do with her... :) I have told my daughter about the accident and
why i'm in a w/c, but she's only 5 so she don't fully understand....when we are
out and about in town though, she
does ask me about others that are in w/c's...:) It is nice to know that there
is other mothers out there whom are in w/c's, I have met a father who is in a
w/c, his wife and him are really good family friends....but it's different when
your a mother.... :) anyhow it was great hearing from you and i am looking
forward to hearing from you again! :)
Rebecca

Hello,

My name is Julia Sterman. I am a graduate student in Occupational
Therapy at Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY. I am currently working on my
thesis project, which will investigate traumatic injury and its
impact on meaningful activities. After reading this letter you will
be given the opportunity to complete an online survey regarding your
participation in meaningful activities following your injury. This
survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

I am looking for individuals who are over the age of 18 and have had
a traumatic physical injury between one (1) and five (5) years ago.
Due to the support groups contacted, most participants will have
amputations, burns, or spinal cord injuries, but you can still
participate if you have other types of traumatic injury. You do not
need to have received occupational therapy to participate. Those who
have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury or severe
intellectual disability are not included in this survey.

The results of this project will be written and presented in a
professional format. I hope to share my results through publication
in a professional journal or presentation at an occupational therapy
conference so that more people may become aware of this issue. The
results may also be useful to guide how occupational therapists work
with individuals who have had similar injuries.

There is little risk to completing the survey; however, if thinking
about your responses causes you to feel distress please contact a
source of support. If at any time a question causes you discomfort
you may choose to skip that question. You can stop completing the
survey at any time you choose. All of your answers will remain
anonymous and confidential. If you continue to feel distress I would
encourage you to seek assistance through local counseling or
psychological services.

If you have any questions about the survey or being a participant,
please contact me at jsterma1@.... or contact Dr. Judy Gonyea,
my thesis adviser, at (607) 274-1737 or jgonyea@.... The survey
tool is encrypted and secure so all information can only be accessed
by the researchers. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Ithaca
College has approved this study.

Thank you for taking the time to complete my survey.

Sincerely,

Julia Sterman

By following the link below you confirm that you agree to participate
in this study, although you may discontinue participation at any
time.
You also acknowledge that 18 years or older.

I was married. I got mine after I left my husband. I have since been with
someone (whom I haven't seen in over 15 years) and he was very comfortable. He
asked a lot of questions and I was very open. There are privacy bags so there is
very little emabarassment. I have let others approach me on my injuries and
health issues. My ex husband would have been fine as well. If someone knows you
he or she will be fine with whatever you decide to do. I admit it was difficult
when my friend and I saw each other, but he made me comfortable and I never gave
it a second thought. Do what feels right and everything will fall into place.
Take care,
Danelle

Danelle,

Are you in a relationship and if you are how do the other person feel about
it? Sorry for being so bold but I always like to consider everything.

I love it now! It was hard in the beginning, but it is worth it and I
wouldn't want to do anything else. I had to have it due to all the accidents
and the crohns.I would encourage getting one, especially if you don't lke
the bathroom transfer. Good luck with your decision. Talk to your doctors
and get educated. I didn't get a chance to do that. I had to have emergency
surgery and they put it in.It is a good thing.
Take Care,
Danelle

I am a 38 yr. woman and had to have a full hysterectomy. I too had
trouble with my bladder and bowel. I wear an intermintant cathater
and had to have a clostomy bag. My bladder spasms are bad and my
hysterectomy has not helped. My surgery was due to severe infection
and crohns. I have UTI's all the time.If I were you I would go to a
gyn cancer specialist to get checked out. All 5 of my doctors
disagreed with with my treatment. I was finally referred to the
cancer specialist (I donot have cancer). He reccommended the surgery
and my doctors finally agreed.
