Hi Hilda,
My name is Theresa, I am 54 and have been a para since 1974, so it's been
awhile for me. I have had 2 children since my accident, have 4 beautiful
grandkids who i adore and even babysit one of them everyday, think that's what
keeps me going. If you would like to write I would enjoy the emails, where do
you live?? I live in Louisiana in a small rural country down deep in the south.
Well hope to hear back, take care.

I went through the survey, and unfortunately can not help because I'm only in
the planning stages of having children (hope to start trying next month). I'd
love to read the results of your project though. Will there be a way for us to
access that?

HI! My name is Alyse and I am a senior at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
I am doing a research project about mothers with spinal cord injuries. My cousin
was paralyzed in a car accident three years ago, and so this topic is near and
dear to my heart. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to complete a
survey in order for people to learn more about mothers with spinal cord
injuries. The survey is 57 questions and all of the information is completely
anonymous and voluntary. I would really appreciate anyone's help.

Thank you for your time!

The link below is to the survey if you wanted to check it out first.

Becki, I wish you the best of luck for the future! Thank you for trying to
answer the survey, I really appreciate it. I would be happy to post my results
when I complete my project. My respondents are supposed to remain anonymous, so
I will post the results on the message board so anyone can look at it without me
knowing :).

Hi,
It's been awhile since I have checked anything on this group, but
wanted to say same for me. I was 21 in 1974 when I had my accident,
plus I had a 3 year old to explain why mommy can't do like she always
did before. I was real bitter when my accident first happen, but like
with everything else in life ,you learn to deal. After my husband
left because he couldn't deal, my life started over caring for myself
and my daughter, wasn't easy, but made me a much stronger and better
person. In 1976 I met my now husband, who never once looked at me as
different .We went on and added a daughter to our family in 1980, and
ason in 1984. We now have 4 beautiful grandkids and life couldn't be
any sweeter. LIFE IS GOOD and thank you for reminding just how good
it is. If you would like to write back and forth I would really enjoy
that. Will be watching email. You have a great weekend. Where are you
from???later, Theresa in Louisiana

Alright, to get conversation going....as you are well aware women with
sci face different challenges than those of our male counterparts. Do
you think we face greater barriers/challenges? Thoughts?

Like many of you I am working on life. My SCI is something that I deal with.
I have had my injury 7 years. I would love to write more but it is tax
season and I take longer with this stuff. I am older and I deal with these
drugs that affect my mind. I live in Madison Wisconsin.

I do think our male counter parts deal with different stuff. I think sex is
a bigger issue for them (whether or not SCI :-) ) and I think mobility
products are a bigger issue for us as most are made for men.

Alright, to get conversation going....as you are well aware women with
sci face different challenges than those of our male counterparts. Do
you think we face greater barriers/challenges? Thoughts?

My name is Becki, I live in Tacoma, Washington. I'm almost 6 years
post injury (and I'm tearing up now because I just realized it's been
that long!). I have an incomplete at t-10 due to a loss of blood
during heart surgery to correct a fatal birth defect. I was 28 at the
time of injury. I'm single (bf of 4 years left a few months after
injury), own a home for 4 years now, have two cats and a new puppy who
is now 6 months old. I also currently have a foreign exchange student
who will be returning to her home in June. I work full time for a
large company. Well...it was large...but if we keep selling off pieces
like we have been, there won't be much left. :(

I'm glad to see some activity in this group. :)

I don't really know many others with sci...I did know a guy a few
years ago, but we lost touch.

I can tell you one thing I face that is a challenge as a disabled
woman...but probably just as a woman in general...and that's dating!
I've experienced guys who think that I should "settle" for whatever
comes along because I'm lucky that someone wants me....but I refuse
to settle...so I'm still single. I personally believe someone would
be lucky to have ME in their life, not vice versa!

Well...I may be a little stuck up. LOL

I'll tell ya though...I'm enjoying single life now more than ever!
At 34 years old, I feel like I'm the best catch around because I
know who I am, know what I want, I take care of myself, and know how
to act like a rational adult in a relationship. Thank goodness I
didn't marry the guys I dated in my 20's!

It seems as though this message board has a few more members now than
the last time I was on. I'm Mary Jane, I'm 60, a para, T11,T12 post 10
years. I have been going through some health issues the past few years
with UTI's which sent me to the hospital . Would love have some advice
on what are good remedies, I"ve tried Mannose D and a few others, so
I'm open to more.
I live in Tarpon Springs with my wonderful husband and grown daughter
and our 7 adorable cats. We live on a golf course near a nature
preserve so we see lots of wild life. I'm currently using a Permobile
power chair, I don't drive due to a head trauma . My husband Harrison
is a patient man and drives me around in a new Toyota sienna Rampvan
which I love!
I know Theresa from long time ago , hope to become a regular on this
board.

You go girl! Stick to your guns.

I was married only 3 months when I had my accident. I was worried about
losing my husband and he has been with me now for my 7 years for being a T5
para.

I was previously married and had two sons in that marriage. I have asked my
sons - now that they are older - if their father, my previous husband, would
have stayed with me during my accident and they say no.

I believe you are right. There are good guys and not so good guys. A good
guy will see you not that you need to settle! You go girl!

Have a great day!

Is there anyone out there??? I joined this group in hopes to talk with
women who go through the everyday bs that I go through. I've been in
my chair for almost 2yrs. And most days are a struggle. I have 2
wonderful children ages 2 and 7. Like most kids they can be a handful
but I love being a mother. I have a great husband who tries his best
to understand what I go through. But I feel completely alone I was the
one everyone leaned on. But now that i need someone there's no one
around. It's funny how much you learn about yourself and the people
around you when things like this happens. I joined a group called
Transverse Myelitis in hopes to meet people there with the same auto
immune disease. But of course I was the only one in a chair. After a
couple of weeks of listening to people complain about not being able
to walk to far I had to quit reading the post. I'd give anything to be
able to move a toe let alone walk.I also live in a hick town and I
can't get in to most places. I cathe every 3 to 4 hours which is a
problem giving it takes 45min to get anywhere. When people do come
over they only stay for a few they don't like seeing me this way. I
feel like me and my kids are on house arrest. I was hoping that I
could learn new ways of doing things by joining this group. And it
would be nice to have people to talk to on my bad days. So if this
isn't that type of group please let me know so I can look around for a
new one.. Thanks

HI, Shana,

I am new to this group too. I have sent this group to a few of my SCI women
friends to encourage them to join. I think it is great to talk about women's
issues.

One of the issues you have mentioned below is cathing. Within one year of my
injury I had a procedure done called the Mitrofanoff-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitrofanoff_appendicovesicostomy

I am a para of 7 years . I have it so that I don't have to be home to cath
and I cath through my belly button. 2 of my sci female friends have had the
procedure done but also had bladder augmentation done at the same time and
had to use intestine instead of their appendix as they already didn't have
one.

Once the healing is done, it is a wonderful freedom to be able to cath
anywhere.

Another sci friend has been self-cathing for 23 years and has a very active
live. She has made modifications to her clothing by using Velcro for the
seams in the crotch area.

All of us have looked into products and changes to help improve everyday
life in a chair including home modifications to what kind of commode to
purchase. Another good sci friend of mine recently built her new home and
has all sorts of knowledge and expertise to share.

Keep asking and sharing.

I will write more later. I hope that helps!

Have a great day!

Monica

hi,
I've been reading the comments for a while. There are so many good
ideas out there. I am a t-10 complete, 7 1/2 years post injury.
Recently I had a bone density done, on my ankle. It showed that I have
osteoporosis. I am 44 years old. When I went to the docs they said
that usually they do not do bone density tests to women who still get
their periods. Since I had a test on my ankle they would do a whole
body scan. Results are pending.
Has anyone else had any run ins like this? Why are the docs not as
aggressive as they should be with us?
Have a great day.
mary
