Re: [Women with SCI] Hi!!!

 Hello!
How are you doing? Hope all is well! :) I ca'n definetly relate to you! :)
After being told my entire life that if I ever get pregnant, it would 'kill me'
by millions of dr's, I gave up hope. The year of 2003 was horrible for me, my
boyfriend at the time had been arrested, my cousin who was also my best friend
was found murdered and my grandma (who raised me after the accident) had been
diagnosed with Cancer. Therefore, i thought that i was missing my monthly
because of stress...Shortly after my boyfriend was released, my grandma told me
to go get tested, i laughed it off at first....but I did listen, and guess what
I was pregnant!!! I was so excited! I had my daughter in September and I
remember calling my grandma crying saying "she can move her legs" she said of
course did you think we lied to you?! (about the accident) I said no....it was a
shocker I don't know why. Then I thought well how am i going to teach her to
crawl? walk? and list went on
from there....my grandma set me down one day and told me that babies learn how
to walk and crawl on thier own, i was a little skeptical. In Nov. my grandma
passed away from cancer. Sure enough though, my daughter learned how to crawl
and walk on her own....now 5yr's later, she's walking, talking,
jumping...basiclly a 'normal' (and i dont like the word normal) 5yr old! There
are still times that I cry because there are things that I want to do with her
but can't. Such as Trick-or-treating or riding rides with her at Disneyland, but
then I realize that I'm LUCKY! Lucky to have her, lucky to be able to kiss,
hug, hold her, etc....be a mother to her...I have to focus on the things i can do
with her! :) It is nice to have family/friends/husband be able to do the things
that i can't do with her... :) I have told my daughter about the accident and
why i'm in a w/c, but she's only 5 so she don't fully understand....when we are
out and about in town though, she
does ask me about others that are in w/c's...:) It is nice to know that there
is other mothers out there whom are in w/c's, I have met a father who is in a
w/c, his wife and him are really good family friends....but it's different when
your a mother.... :) anyhow it was great hearing from you and i am looking
forward to hearing from you again! :)
Rebecca
