RE: [Women with SCI] Digest Number 174

Hi Emily!

I am glad you joined us. I myself am new too. I am sorry for the situations
you are going through right now, I have also felt the presure of "not wanting to
show something." I was wondering, Is there a possibility for you to
catheterize? I the answer is yes, then you won't have to use the bag all the
time. Perhaps you can talk to you urologist about it and ask for more
suggestions. I think that for you to sunbathe, may be you can take the bag off
while you sunbathe and then put a new one back.

I hope I did not offend you with my suggestions.

Keep in touch,

Yanisse

Hello, it's nice to join a group of women with SCI. I am a cervical 4-5
quad and I have found it really hard to find female quadriplegics to talk
to. Quad guys, on the other hand, seem to be all over the place! I have
many questions to ask you guys, but first I'd like to start out with one
that is a bit superficial (hope I'm not getting off to a bad start.) I have
a leg bag which really inhibits my choice in fashion. I really miss wearing
dresses and shorts, and I would like to sunbathe without my appliance
shining. Does anyone have any ideas about how to conceal a bag? I have
visited the web sites that offer fashion tips but I have found nothing on
this topic. Also, does anyone have any ideas for really, really soft yet
somewhat sturdy footwear? I have been paralyzed for almost 11 years now and
I can no longer wear anything on my feet except my orthotic boots I wear at
night and one particular brand of diabetic shoe which is more like a house
shoe. The skin on my feet has gotten really delicate and thin, so no cute
shoes for me! Otherwise, I get pressure sores. The little ballet slippers
women are wearing these days don't provide enough support, and they let my
ankles roll outward. Hope someone has some ideas. Feel free to e-mail me
off the list, if you like. Thanks -- Emily

Hello. I have been trying to contact anyone with the same problem as I
have now. This past January I went in for an ESI (10 minute procedure
for scar tissue). Needless to say the radiologist missed his mark and
punctured my thecal sac and injected the dye w/steroids. I was
paralyized from the waist down immediately. Needless to say...
emergency surgery was done to remove the fluid/dye. I have full use of
my right leg, but the left leg is just there with very sciatic pain in
the upper portion of my leg. I was told that I was just going to have
to accept the fact that I was going to be disabled/handicapped for the
rest of my life. Any words of wisdom? Much appreciated.

Thanks,
TLA

NO! NO! NO!
I am not in the same situation but I have been a Para for 24 years and you
must have some recourse. I know the name of an attorney in Santa Cruz that
has been a Quad since he was in his early teens and he is in his 60's now.
He might be able to give you some direction of what to do and where to go.
I myself am a para and have been for 24 years. What happened to you is
inexcusable and don''t let anyone tell you any different.
The Attorney's name is Robert Ludlow and he practices in Santa Cruz and in
Hawaii. I moved away from Santa Cruz 2 yrs. ago but I am sure he is around.
I am sorry to hear that there is still people practicing medicine like the
person you had. I was a nurse for 40 years and saw some terrible things
happen over the years but now with all the regulation and laws this should
not happen.

Well good luck to you and please if you need a shoulder feel free to e-mail
me.

eshaw

Hello all, Im hoping someone can help me out! Im 25, female with a
sci. My levels are c3-5 and t6-8 incomplete. I can walk with a walker.
I also have a hip and pelvic fracture due to my injury. I am 3 years
post.
2 weeks ago I just found out that I am pregnant! I am very happy but
scared. I have read alot on the internet and know that it is very
possible to have kids after sci and millions of women do it. What I am
scared about is my hip and pelvic fracture. Will this cause any harm
to the baby?? I have searched the net and cant find anything.

I go to my dr. this Thursday but I am needing to know something now!
Can anyone help???
Thanks

Try getting ahold of Debra ? At Santa Clara Vally Medical Spinal cord unit.
If it has been 3 years your factures of your pelvis and hip should be well
healed and it isn't going to cause any problems to the baby. Being
incomplete you are probably going to feel the contractions. But I know they
have Doctors at Santa Clara Valley Medical spinal cord injury unit that will
know the answers to all your question. I am a para T1T2 complete and have a
friend that had a baby 1 year after she had a spinal cord injury I think she
is T 6 or 7. And her boy is 20+ years old now.

You just have to go to the right doctors not ones that have never deliverer
a baby from a wome with a sci, and make sue to ask how many babies they have
delivered. That is very important

Many women have had babies after SCI's

Thank you for the reply! I live in Illinois. I have a wonderful
spinal cord injury dr. in ST.Louis. I see her this Thursday. It just
seems so far away..lol Yes, it has been 3 years. I worry because
when I lay flat my lower back gets really stiff, and my left leg
doesnt straighten out flat. Before my injury I use to sit "indian"
style all the time. now I can get my legs in that position but they
will not go down!I guess with all this it has me worried that the
baby will not have enough room.
