Dear Friend,
This Mother's Day, I'd like to tell you a little bit about one of the greatest moms in the world. Her name was Elizabeth Glaser - and she was my mother.
My mother was an amazing woman. I can still remember the way she always took care of my sister, Ariel, and me. The way she held us, and loved us, and showed us the good and the hope in everything. But one thing made us different from other loving families - we were HIV-positive.
My family was devastated when, at age 7, Ariel died from AIDS because there were no medicines available for children with the disease. But my mom never gave up hope. She created the
Pediatric AIDS Foundation, along with her two closest friends, to fight for all children and families with HIV.
My mother demanded attention for an issue that was being ignored. For the first time, she provided a voice to children with HIV/AIDS. She wouldn't take no for an answer and eventually, people started to listen.
Twenty years later pediatric HIV/AIDS has almost been eradicated here in the U.S., but sadly, it is still ravaging sub-Saharan Africa and other parts of the globe.
But we can't do this alone. Every day, more than 1,000 children are newly infected with HIV. And they need your help.
My mom was the first person to stand up for children with HIV/AIDS, but she understood that she couldn't do it alone. And as we continue to push forward, it is more important than ever to do it together.
Join us in the battle to create a generation free of HIV. Every one of us can make a difference. I learned that lesson from the best mother in the world.
With all of the compassion and gratitude that fills my heart, I thank you for your vital support. Happy Mother's Day.
Sincerely,
Jake Glaser
