Foundation CEO Speaks at the Center for Strategic and International Studies The need for dramatic scale-up of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programs in Africa was the focus of a speech by Foundation President and CEO Pam Barnes at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) January 13. While highlighting progress, Barnes emphasized work yet to do and called on global leaders to explore creative partnerships to ensure continued progress toward realizing a generation free of HIV. Listen to the speech.

Expert Panel Features Foundation Leadership On January 9, Dr. Laura Guay, the Foundation's vice president for research, joined other leaders in the field to convene the first meeting of the Expert Panel on Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV. The Foundation's public policy team successfully advocated for the creation of the panel as part of the reauthorization of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The panel will independently review current PMTCT practices, identify barriers to scaling up PMTCT programs, and propose strategies for meeting the ambitious targets set in the PEPFAR reauthorization legislation. Editorial Calls for Greater Development of Pediatric Medicines An editorial written by Foundation President and CEO Pam Barnes was published in December's edition of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences as part of a global health commentary series. The article, titled "Inside the Medicine Cabinet: Making Children's Medicines a Grown-Up Issue," focuses on the need for medicines, including those to fight HIV/AIDS, that are properly designed for pediatric use and outlines the U.S. pediatric drug testing laws the Foundation helped reauthorize. Read the article.

Supporter Spotlight: Tom and Laurie Antonellis Last summer, Tom and Laurie Antonellis walked dozens of miles across the hills of Swaziland, raising thousands of dollars for the Foundation through their participation in AIDS Walk Africa. Their most recent fundraising effort, though, was right in their own backyard: a "5% Day" at Whole Foods to benefit the Foundation. More.

Notes from the Field: Uganda This Christmas, Foundation Uganda Communications Officer Faridah Akuju and the members of the Ariel Children's Club exchanged the best kinds of gifts: love and laughter. Read more.
