Foundation Takes Leading Role at International AIDS Conference
In early August, Foundation staff members from around the world convened in Mexico City for the 17th International AIDS Conference. The conference attracted more than 20,000 HIV professionals, including some of the most preeminent minds in the HIV/AIDS field. The Foundation had a large presence at the event -- hosting and participating in oral presentations, satellite sessions, workshops, and a book launch, all relating to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy. From the Ground Up Launched
The Foundation unveiled its new three-volume publication, From the Ground Up: Building Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Care Programs in Resource-Limited Settings, at the International AIDS Conference on August 5. From the Ground Up, edited by Foundation Vice President for Technical Implementation Dr. Ric Marlink, is a collection of best practices and lessons learned in HIV/AIDS program implementation, with a special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. More than 230 HIV/AIDS professionals from around the globe contributed to this groundbreaking publication, which will serve as an invaluable resource for international HIV/AIDS professionals, students, and others who wish to learn more about the global HIV/AIDS response. President Bush Signs Landmark HIV/AIDS Legislation Into Law
On July 31, President Bush signed the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde U.S. Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008, which renews the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. The law, which authorizes $48 billion and is the largest piece of global HIV/AIDS legislation in history, takes a huge step toward ensuring that HIV prevention, care, and treatment services reach millions of children and families in need. Foundation President and CEO Pamela W. Barnes represented the Foundation at the White House signing ceremony. "By working through PEPFAR with other implementers and in partnership with host countries, we can strengthen our efforts to achieve an HIV-free generation," Barnes said. Learn more.
