Heroes Show Up in Droves to Support the Foundation
More than 1,500 supporters spent June 8 soaking up sun and fun at the nineteenth annual A Time for Heroes Celebrity Carnival. Held at the Wadsworth Theater Grounds in Los Angeles, the Carnival featured celebrity guests, food from L.A.'s top eateries, a Ferris wheel and other fun games, and raised nearly $1 million to help the Foundation's efforts to eradicate pediatric AIDS. Celebrity "heroes" included actors Robin Williams, Courteney Cox and David Arquette; Nicole Ritchie and Joel Madden; and the cast of MTV's reality drama The Hills. More.
Foundation CEO Part of UN Delegation
The Foundation continued its global work advocating for children in June when Foundation President Pam Barnes participated in the UN General Assembly Special Session as a U.S. delegate and a panelist. The high-level meeting brought together leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS, and addressed global expansion of services that provide medicines to combat the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. Foundation Awards $1 Million in Pediatric HIV Vaccine Grants
In April, five U.S.-based scientists were awarded grants totaling $1 million as part of the Foundation's Pediatric HIV Vaccine Research Program, a new global initiative created to ensure children are an integral part of the vaccine effort. Foundation Staff Participate in High-Level HIV/AIDS Meeting
The 2008 HIV/AIDS Implementers Meeting, hosted by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, gathered key implementers - including the Foundation - in Kampala, Uganda to discuss key issues. The four-day event provided organizations the opportunity to share lessons learned and best practices in the scale-up of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services. U.S. Government Officials Visit Foundation Site in Rwanda
The Masaka Health Center in Kigali, which serves more than 20,000 people, provides lifesaving antiretroviral treatment to families through support from the Ministry of Health and the Treatment and Research AIDS Center. In April, representatives of the U.S. government toured the facility with Rwandan government officials. More.
Foundation Staff Member Star of Radio Call-in Show
On March 14, Blandinah Motaung, a Foundation program advisor in Lesotho, participated in a two-hour radio call-in show fielding questions about mother-to-child transmission, care and treatment options, and other HIV/AIDS topics, contributing to the understanding of the epidemic in Lesotho. More.
