I am soaking for a trial in soil as the carpets seem to be a dismal
approach. I left the grass outside over the weekend and they shot up two
inches, so I believe there is some truth to the natural light requirement. I
measured the grass today and it is 6 inches after 10 days… bad, I know. (see
pic attached).

The second batch (planted/laid on Thursday) seems to be much more “thicker”
and has a faster growth rate than the previous – I cut the seed down to 1 ½
cups of seed and gave more water (from a can instead of spray). Also, this
was soaked for 24 hrs in the refrigerator which I believe is my success to
low mold.

I used to buy the (grown) wheatgrass from sproutman.com – the grass was
tall, thick and the blades were broad. Taste was potent and high yield. I
thought it was good quality stuff. After I used the grass, I checked what
their growing medium was – they use some form of a carpet/mat too, but was
much thicker than the one I have been using. That’s why I thought I’d use
these. I sent them an email asking for some advice and they responded “our
seeds are best”, “buy…” and a whole lot if links to their site and products.
I ask for advice and they return with a marketing pitch.



I haven’t tasted my yield yet – the grass does smell less powerful than that
which I purchased. I chewed a few pieces and the taste was certainly there
and not bad. I’m not a connoisseur, though.

This is the first I have heard of a CARPET. I thought those who did
not use soil/compost went the ORGANIC POTTING SOIL or HYDROPHONIC
route. I think my grass would mimic your Dads more than yours. I
really do believe that the more natural the growing conditions the
better it will be. I just finished planting 4 trays and will photo
them for you.
After 7 days you should be ready for cutting.
Maybe you should grow 2 at a time; 1 with carpet and 1 with potting
soil keep all conditions same and compare those with your Dads
Do me a favor and take particular note of the TASTE for each growth.
I grow for three people and TASTE seems to be very important as we
take it straight first thing AM. It has confounded me in the past as
the taste changes even though I feel the growing conditions are the
same. My last 3 trays: 2 OK good height and color. The third somewhat
sickly green, thinner blade and loaded with MOLD. After good rinsing
an OK taste but not great. Believe OVERWATERING is cause. Recommend
Ann Wigs video.
I don't use a sprouter but just let them sit for a day or 12 hrs in a
bowl after rinsing covered with a damp cloth and plant when the
sprout is maybe 1/8th" or so.
Maybe you should consider building a small covered rack for the
outside. I have one and use plastic but it is no match for the
squirrels and chipmunks. They go right in the soil for the seed and
will forage the used mats also, but can't help believing the sun and
photosynthesis is all important. PAX, egulls2
