Quentin J.:
I will take pics on the next batch. I will post as soon as they are
taken, but I think they will be twins to your Dads.
This is the first I have heard of a CARPET. I have heard of using a
good brand of POTTING SOIL, but they seem to be ones that require
many more ounces than someone like us at 2,4 or 6 ounces per day and
their needs overtake composting. They just discard the trays after
cutting.I am now out of the basement and growing mostly outdoors so
my conditions are different than in the winter/basement.
I am trying to control all conditions of growing. I had a thermometer
in the basement during winter and it was pretty constant at 75%.There
is one on the porch also. If it is too hot (over 75/78% I make sure
it is in good shade or take it inside. I will keep the soil the same
on 2 trays but use different seeds. I will try different mix of soil
and same seeds. My reason for this is trying to develop a GOOD TASTE.
PLEASE RECORD THE TASTE OF YOUR DIFFERENT TRAYS AND LET ME KNOW IF IT
IS CONSTANT. My wife and I take it straight first thing in the morn
and she is very turned off if it isn't somewhat good tasting. It
seems (at least from the last few batches) that a good thorough
RINSING prior to juicing makes a difference. The taste is the
principle reason I do not second growth. Outside presents problems.
Two days ago I planter sunflower seeds for a salad mix. I went out to
see how they were doing and a chipmunk scooted out from under my
cover. He had a FEAST...not much left. And they along with squirrels
and birds LOVE the wheat berries.
The only answer is a protective cover that does not shield ultra
violet rays. My readings in the past say INDIRECT NOT DIRECT
sunlightbut I can't help thinking that it is the sun than makes it
green (photosynthesis) Some trays are not as green as others, yet I
feel all growing conditions are the same (?). Am using hard winter
wheat. Have tried KAMUT wiyh great success, but it is expensive in
comparison. Have tried BARLEY but it doesn't taste well.
Am anxious to see if you will post conditions in planting and growing
and results in comparing your harvest vrs your Dads. What is he using
for soil? Sunlight?, frequency of watering? I think his will always
be taller and thicker because of the soil. Do you agree?
My BIGGEST problem after two years still seems to be the $#@%&*#*%$!
