Potting soil has chemicals, fertilizers, etc in it. You must get
organic soil. Yes. Absolutely recycle the root pallet.....along
with starting a compost bin with a couple large garbage cans full
of holes and put worms in it. One layer, root pallets, next layer
table scraps but no fruit. It'll take 2-3 mos until the soil is ready
again.

I've just started this too but it'll be all worth it in the long run of a
long life span.
