Hi Paulos72
I'm a former staff member of the wheatgrass institute in San Diego,
CA and thought I'd pass on a few tips to you.
Grow your WG in a nursery tray that has holes on the bottom. They
often are free from the nursery, but I've paid up to a 1.00 each.
Line the bottom with one damp layer of a brown paper bag, use about
an inch of moist/damp soil gently packed to give you a smooth top,
then cover top of soil with soaked berries..like frosting a cake.
Cover with wet(not dripping) newsprint or wet brown paper. Try to set
up a shelf with narrow wooded slats so your wheatgrass tray can
breath from the bottom of the tray. Rotate your tray every day.
The white foamy mold is harmless, it is the brown mold that is not ok.
Mold happens because soil is too wet, watering too much, not enough
air circulation, planting the berries to thickly.
Worm castings are super to mix with the soil, about 1/4 cup or less
per amt. of soil needed for several trays(3-4). Worm castings are
very acidic so use sparingly. We had organic soil from the garden.
We also used powdered purple dulse from Norway about 1 tablespoon per
gallon of water. Seeds are soaked in it and the soaking water saved
and put in a spray bottle. Planted seeds are sprayed once a day with
this soaking water. Moisten the top layer of paper every day until
you see white shoots growing up from the wheatberries.
If all you can find now are kelp capsules...empty and dilute in water
for soaking and spraying. Mix 1 tablespoon per gallon of water.
Wheatgrass has all the minerals known to man, so try to used high
quality organic red hard winter berries. If you are using the
lighter brown wheat berry..that is the spring wheat and doesn't grow
as well. Spring wheat is more suited to cooking and baking and the
white summer berries are the mildest of all. We used the summer
white to make a lemon/lime type of drink called rejuvelac or what we
called the 'elixer of life'
When i find my notes, I'll send you whatever info I haven't put in
this email post. Hope I've helped you a little bit.
Lee
