Re: Patty

Hey Pattie...i'm debbie and my husband Mac has WKS for 3 yrs. now
he was diaganosed 3 days after we wed in 2000.
He has short term memory loss and seizures, he takes dilantin for his seizures...he was 154 lbs. and dropped down to 123 lbs.
he has gotten a lot better since then but the doc has never realy said he will get 100% better just that there was hope, he goes to the doc
bout every 6 months...he does well with long term memory also.
there is hope for improvement and of course everyone is different.
as far as recovering  for me it's just sit and wait and hope.
i try and play a lot of games with him and put up notes to remind him of stuff, i have put up a lot of wedding pictures for sometimes he doesn't remember me and that was so scary for he thought i broke in one nite and was after me with a knife but at the last second he stopped and didn't remember this happening...it is very difficult to go through and a lot of people have never heard of this.
he got this from alcoholism but i believe you can get it through other ways but i'm not sure how, i'll ask a friend of mine if you want.

Mac was a work aholic and did computers for a living but now he sleeps alot and is down and feels like all has been taken from him.
the doc won't let him drive, do any yardwork, work on auto of any kind.

i am his only caregiver for both our families live out of state but try to help much as possible!!!

somedays i feel like throwing in the towel but i come to my senses,
i love him very much.

he also repeats thing alot and i mean alot. but he has improved a lot
in the last 3 yrs.

also he has a vitamin deficiency but only takes vitamines a lot of people take thiamin.

i don't know how much i've helped you if any at all but if you've any
more questions i'll be glad to try and answer them for you.

Hang in there and take care
                              God Bless...Debbie

To make a very long story short, my 45 year old brother is now in a
nursing home.  They told me he has korsakoff syndrome.  I can't seem
to get much feel for whether this is a permanent thing or not.  He
does well with long term memory, but can't form or hang on to new
memories.  Can someone please tell me more about it, and whther I can
realistically expect improvement in him?  I want to help him, but I
have no idea how to do that.  I am disheartened and depressed, this
is one of the hardest things I have ever dealt with.  I am having a
hard time gettin much information at all.

Patty
