I agree. Sunni's father made a choice a long time ago to ruin his
body and brain with the effects of alcohol and thiamine deprivation.
What's happening now is the result of the choice that he made. He
does not have the right to hurt or kill other people because of that
decision. The criminal justice system exists in part to protect us
from such people.

Unfortunately, a lot of counties and states may not have a good system
available to address the needs of a violent person whose behavior may
be caused by medical problems. Apparently, that's considered an
option rather than a right.

I think there's probably not much danger from dying of the DTs at this
late point. Perhaps the experience of being in jail will impress upon
Sunni's father that he has hit bottom and can no longer take the risk
of drinking again. If not, if he still doesn't acknowledge that, then
he's not responsible enough to be freed and allowed to hurt other
people.

(By the way, videotaping the actions of someone who is being bizarre
in some way might help get through that person's denial later, but of
course, it would be important to be safe while videotaping the
behavior.)
