My dad was admitted to the hospital yesterday for what his assisted
living facility thought was a stroke. The hospital he was admitted
to isn't real on the ball with diagnosis. They say no stroke, but he
does have a kidney infection, which caused his fever. They can't
explain his confusion. They say his weakness is because of
his "condition" but won't say what his condition is. He's been going
to therapy the last few weeks because of his decreased use of his
legs.

His right leg is swollen and red. The nurse said this is because the
blood is laying there and not circulating.

He has hepatic encephalopathy and will not take the lactulose to help
with that because that would mean his failing health was caused by
alcohol, which he refuses to admit. He hasn't taken it since July.

He hasn't been drinking since April.

Here's my question, From what I've read, WKS is gradual and there is
no huge change once drinking stops. You will usually continue to get
worse, but it's gradual. Does this seem like another step in WKS or
the next phase of hepatic encephalopathy or something entirely
different?

Any experiences you've had would be appreciated.

Amanda
