Hello to all:
I've read many--though not all--of the messages this group has
posted and thought I'd chime in.
I had a nasty go-round with Wernicke-Korsakoff (both) in the summer
of 2005. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll post a first-hand
account in the files section. It's called Green Goblin. I wrote it
and hope to sell it to a magazine. I changed the names, but the
symptoms, treatment, and recovery are the best I can remember and
convey.
I'm one of the lucky ones. I realize it now after doing some
research. I have full mobility and memory functions and am pursuing
a career as a novelist. Considering I spent some time not being able
to understand English I'm more than grateful to be able to string
more than one word together and have it make sense at all.
I feel for everyone touched by the syndrome. I wish I had magic
answers (there aren't any,) but if there's a question I can answer
from the perspective of a sufferer, please let me know.
And, no, I don't drink anymore. Once the full weight of Wernicke-
Korsakoff sunk in, I lost the urge (mostly) to tip a beer can.
God Bless.
Dave
