Sorry about what you guys are going through. As if the disease isn't bad
enough, you need more to worry about.
My situation is only getting worse. My dad lives on his own, still drinks
constantly. We had to have his number blocked from our home because he would
leave these horrific messages.
Tuesday he fell in the street and wouldn't let anyone help him up. Traffic was
backed up, neighbors were all around. Finally we got him in the house (My
husband and I live about 2 blocks from him)
Saturday morning we got a call at 5 a.m. that he was found across the creek,
alive. He fell down a creek bank about 13 feet (the creek runs behind our house
and there's a walking trail on the other side). He got up and walked through
the water. It had just rained, the creek was about 3 feet high and 25 feet
across. No one knows how he got across it. I went across our footbridge to the
trail and down to my dad. He thought he was in the house. He was taken to the
hospital, his body temperature was 93 degrees and his blood alcohol level was
.174, which isn't really bad for him. It was higher in his last DUI. No one
knows how long he was in the water.
Amazingly, this is not enough to have him declared incompetent!! He knew all
his medications and dosage, he knew everything the doctor asked, I was right
there. The doctors say, yes he is an alcoholic, but that's his right to drink,
he's not incompetent!!! When I ask exactly what is then, I'm told he's not there
yet.....I've tried different doctors, different hospitals. The last doctor
wanted to have him declared incompetent but when I pressed him (in our state you
have a hearing within 48 hours, a hearing after 2 weeks, a hearing after 30 days
and a hearing after 60 days and at all the hearings my dad gets a court
appointed attorney and a doctor of his own) if he would be there through all the
hearings, and not change his opinion about my dad and how long would this
committment last, he wouldn't give me a straight answer. He sees no reason he
couldn't be there, but the length of time my dad would be committed or is there
a guarantee he would be, he won't answer.
Anyway, it's a mess. He'll be released from the hospital today or tomorrow and
it will start again. The horror of having to go to his house to see if he has
died has been replaced by the image of him in the creek and the greater horror
that if he had gotten swept away, he would have ended up against our bridge.
For those of you still drinking....My dad, a self employed, dignified business
man with a beautiful house on an acre of landscaped ground is now living in a
house with literal crap all over the bathroom floor and in the sink. There is
food ground into the carpet. He falls often and there is also blood on the
walls and on the floor. He bleeds from his mouth, so I find muffins or fruit
with bite marks out of them ringed with blood. He pees himself, he poops
himself, he has green bile that he vomits and it too dries on his clothes. In
this condition, he sobers up enough to call a cab and go into town to get more
alcohol.
Is it worth it?
