My dad received Medicaid and Medicare fairly quickly. He has a food stamp card.
The social security has been another issue, but I think we're headed in the
right direction. Unfortunately, his time is running out. I don't think he'll
be alive much longer and I haven't yet been able to deal with my grief because
my mom and aunts and uncles rely on me.
My dad's liver has failed. His kidneys are failing. He's on medication to ease
some of the pain and symptoms of this, but there's not much else to do at this
point. His brain is poisoned by everything he eats, at least that's my
understanding. He's living a block from me in my grandma's house. He's living
alone. He can dress and bathe himself at this point and he eats what I bring
him and my mom takes him his medicine every morning. He's not drinking that we
can tell. He's on an antidepressant, I can't think of the name right now. He's
also on medication to help him produce urine and to flush the food from his
digestive tract. He's also on an antibiotic because he can't destroy the
bacteria in his "gut"(that's the medical term) anymore.
It's pretty horrible. I think at some level he understands what's happening but
he doesn't admit it. He talks about the future and what he's going to do with
his grandson and getting his business started again. We just let him talk. I
know it's going to get worse and my mom and I keep reminding the other of that
when we get exasperated by him, which is often. He forgets things quickly, like
when his appointments are and when we're going to shop, etc, but remembers phone
numbers and names and people really well. Although if you surprise him with a
visit it takes a few seconds for him to realize it's you.
Anyway, enough saddness!! I'm glad some of you are making progress and hope
you're loved ones don't advance as quickly as my dad has, of course he continued
to drink heavily.
John, if you're reading still, please read what I'm not saying. The every day
grief, the horrible sadness I feel that my dad will never see his grandson turn
a year old or be able to play with him. It's awful. Knowing he will not be
able to plant a garden this year. Watching him die and pretend nothing is
abnormal is a terrible thing for a daughter to go through. Please continue to
not drink. WKS is bad enough. The last time I remember your post you were
going to a rehab place. I hope it helped you. I hope you continue to get
support. I hope you are able to stay strong and fight the desire to drink.
Amanda
