Holidays are a time of warm feelings and joy as well as a time of stress and an
extra load of responsibilities. It is usually the lady of the house that coordinates all of the holiday activities in the home and many times does the bulk of the work.If this describes you, then the following tips may help increase the pleasure of your holiday season.
As the family holiday maker you have to take care of yourself first before others. In a season of giving this may seem selfish, but let me explain…In order for you to meet the physical demands of extra cooking,
cleaning, shopping and general merry making you must prioritize your health. Here are some quick and simple ways that will help boost your energy, stamina and strengthen your immune system.
Maintain a stable blood sugar level throughout the day by starting with a nutritious breakfast including fiber and low fat protein.Whole grain foods move slower through the digestive tract helping to stabilize your appetite plus absorb and move along toxins for elimination. Protein will keep you satisfied during your busy day.If you are not a breakfast eater, try a nutritious soy protein shake blended with your favorite fruit or low fat chocolate powder or instant coffee.Soy is a high quality protein available in a variety of forms including a powder form for easy blending into your favorite juices, milk or foods.Be careful not to skip meals!Eat three meals a day and 1 – 2 snacks depending on your activity level.Don’t allow more than 3 – 4 hours to pass without eating something good for you.
Prepare and stock the kitchen with healthy and quick foods to keep you nourished.Bag up cut vegetables, your choice, snack on them raw or sautι them in olive oil, chopped garlic, and red pepper flakes.Refrigerate and use as a quick side dish or a micro-waved snack.Make a hearty soup and portion into quick mini meals for the week.Make extra oatmeal for breakfast and save the remainder for a warm snack later in the day.If you are out of the house, keep almonds, walnuts, peanuts, dried fruit or protein bars bagged in your purse.Be aware that cereal bars
contain a lot of sugar making you hungrier in an hour and creating a rollercoaster ride for your blood sugar level.Look for protein bars that have at least 9 grams of protein, preferably soy, which will curb hunger, provide needed vitamins and minerals and maintain a level blood sugar.
Boost your immune system to avoid a cold or flu during your busy schedule.Honey bee products like propolis, bee pollen (some people are allergic to pollen so try small amounts first) and bee royal jelly are natural sources of essential vitamins, enzymes and minerals and are an excellent way to support the body’s natural
defenses.Look for a company that has a patented stabilization process for their bee products so that you get the full benefits of these delicate nutrients. Another natural addition to your diet is Echinacea, a widely used Western herb shown to enhance immune function.Other general guidelines are daily adequate sleep, limiting simple sugar consumption and plenty of fluids preferably from diluted vegetable juices, soups and herb teas.
It is well known that elevated, constant levels of stress decrease immune function, increase weight problems (up or down), and accelerate disease.Plan for nourishment, regular exercise (walk at least 30 minutes a day even if you have to break it up) and balance your activities. If you are watching your weight, do not deny yourself the pleasures of the holidays, eat foods that bring you joy in moderate amounts. One important tip, don’t avoid eating all day waiting for the big holiday meal.Calories eaten throughout the day are more efficiently burned while a single load of calories taxes the digestive system.Have a good quality aloe vera juice in the fridge to calm irritable tummies just in case you over do it!
Last but not least, if you pray, spend a little more time with this centering activity. The meditative qualities of prayer do wonders for our health, mood and spirit!
Do You Suffer with Neck Pain?
Neck pain is bothersome and it has a variety of causes. It could be a
stiff neck from sleeping funny or it could be a serious neck injury.
Typically, neck pain is the result of muscle strain, and one side of
the neck may hurt more than the other. Muscle strains tend to improve
within one week or so. However, if the pain persists longer, call your
spine specialist, as it may be another condition that needs medical
treatment.

Back Pain and Aging
Back pain is extremely common in our society. In fact, almost 80% of
adults in the United States will encounter some form of back pain in
their lifetimes. There are many reasons why so many people experience
back pain, including poor posture, poor body mechanics, overweight,
excessive strain on the spine, smoking, poor diet, as well as spinal
diseases and other health conditions, but the most common cause of
back pain in our country is simply aging. Read on to find out why
aging can be a real pain.
The Spine
The spine is made up of individual bones called vertebrae, which
provide support for the body. In between each vertebra is a disc that
gives the spine flexibility and serves as a shock absorber for the
body. Discs are made up of a tire-like outer band (called the annulus
fibrosus) and a gel-like inner substance (called the nucleus
pulposus). Together, the vertebrae and the discs provide a protective
tunnel (called the spinal canal) through which the spinal cord and
spinal nerves pass through.
What happens when we age?
For many of us, several things begin to happen to our spines as we
age. Our vertebrae begin to thicken and our discs start to loose
moisture and shape. As a result, the spinal canal becomes narrower
putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve endings and causing
pain, numbness, or weakness in the body. This condition is called
spinal stenosis. While stenosis can affect people in their 20s and
30s, it is most commonly seen in older patients. Spinal stenosis is a
degenerative condition, meaning the symptoms tend to be progressive,
increasing in severity as the patient ages.
Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis can occur in all areas of the spine, but occurs most
often in the lumbar (lower back) and cervical (neck) areas. Patients
with lumbar spinal stenosis may feel pain, weakness, or numbness in
the legs, calves or buttocks. Symptoms often increase when walking
short distances and decrease when sitting, bending forward, or lying
down. Cervical spinal stenosis has similar symptoms in the shoulders,
arms, and legs, and may also include hand clumsiness and gait and
balance disturbances.
Treatment Options for Spinal Stenosis
The good news is that nearly 90 percent of spinal stenosis cases are
successfully treated without surgery. Non-surgical treatment options
most commonly used for patients with stenosis include the following:
• Medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) to reduce swelling and pain, and analgesics to relieve pain.
• Rest or restricted activity (this may vary depending on extent
of nerve involvement).
• Chiropractic Adjustments and physical therapy for stretching and
strengthening exercise to help stabilize the spine, restore mobility,
increase flexibility,decrease pain.
Severe cases of spinal stenosis may require surgery. However, surgery
should not be considered unless several months of non-surgical
treatments have been tried. The most common surgery used to treat
stenosis is called decompressive laminectomy in which the laminae
(bony plates located on the back of the vertebra) are removed to
create more space in the spinal canal.
Don't Ignore Back Pain
With all of the treatment options available today, it's no longer
necessary to accept back pain as a normal part of the aging process.
Back pain, especially if it continues to get worse, includes bowel and
bladder difficulties, or prevents you from participating in your
everyday activities, should not be ignored. Talk to your physician or
Chiropractor. They will help you find a treatment plan that can return
you to your pain-free life once more.

Everyone gets back pain once in a while. But what do you do once it
starts? Here's 5 ways to manage occasional bouts of back pain:
#1 - Rest - but just a little
If your back hurts, take a rest. Lie down and avoid overusing your
back muscles for a while. This doesn't mean stay in bed for a week.
In fact, too much rest can make your back pain worse. After a short
break, get up, move around, and stretch. You'll find it actually
helps reduce that nagging backache.
#2 - Medications
Today, there are a wide variety of medications to choose from to
treat back pain. Some drugs relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and
relax muscle spasms. Many are available over-the-counter at your
local drug store or pharmacy. Other medications require a doctor's
prescription. However many of these from a chiropractors perspective
alleviate they symptoms rather than the cause.
#3 - Cold/Heat therapy
Cold therapy can help reduce inflammation, muscle spasm, and pain.
Cold therapy may be recommended immediately following a sprain or
strain. Apply cold to your back using cold packs, ice cubes, iced
towels/compresses, or take a cool bath.
Apply heat to your aching back by using a hot compress, a dry or
moist heating pad, or hydrotherapy (hot bath). Heat therapy can help
decrease muscle spasms, relax tense muscles, relieve pain, and can
increase range of motion.
A good general rule if you are unsure whether heat or cold would be
better is does it make your back feel better when you apply it? If
you feel better then it is working. Remember, never apply cold or
heat/hot therapies directly on your skin - wrap it in a towel first.
Wrap-It Hot/Cold Pack from Relax The Back
#4 - Massage
Massage is a popular therapy that can help relieve muscle tension,
spasms, inflammation, aches, stiffness, and pain. It can also help
improve circulation, flexibility, and range of motion. Massage can
be administered by a professional (massage therapist) or you can
give yourself a mini-massage using hand-held massagers that can help
increase blood flow and relieve pain.
#5 - See Your Chiropractor
The most important thing to remember about periodic bouts of back
pain is that if they occur more and more frequently, increase in
duration (more than a few days), or the pain starts to interfere
with your usual activities, it's time to see your chiropractor. It
could be more than just a minor strain.
The good news is that most back problems can be treated with non-
surgical methods. Back problems that go untreated may get worse and
could cause serious health consequences.

The annual Country Music Festival is coming up on the 8th and there will be a group of us going. If you like country and good ol' rockn'roll you'll have a blast! Tickets are 28 euros and usually you can buy them there at the box office without problems. To be on the safe side I heard there was a ticket box in Syntagma square for tickets before the event. The program is part of the Athens Summer Festival, we have been going and dancing (many people just watch and enjoy the atmosphere!) every year since the beginning and always have a great time!
We will be meeting an hour before the concert in the outdoor bar in the courtyard of the theatre. Call me if you want to meet us! We will be two-steppin' and line dancing! Anyone want to dance?
Here is my latest article on Wellness submitted to a newsletter printed in Athens, I hope you are all having a revitalizing summer!

Jump Start to a Healthier Lifestyle
by Catherine Skepetaris
Living in Greece the past 10 years has expanded my thinking and challenged my approach to life. One example is how I approach new beginnings.I used to make fresh starts in January like most people, it seemed logical with the new calendar year, but still some how it didn’t feel natural.Nothing about it was new except the date. The holiday
season was in full swing, the kids still needed to follow their school schedule and my personal program was designed around it.Summers in Greece are a completely different lifestyle for us than the school/work year.Sleeping patterns, food choices, social and work activities are very different.I use the summer time as my reassessment and reorganization time and fresh starts in September follow effortlessly.
Like any new beginning, creating a healthier lifestyle has specific components that one must examine and approach in a reasonable
and realistic order.I suggest the following steps, taken at your own pace, with a keen eye one the success of the first step before proceeding to the next.
Step 1:Make a firm decision that you really want a healthier lifestyle. Be willing to learn new information and practices.Write down the date of your next health assessment appointment with your
doctor. If you begin your new start with a weak commitment you will sabotage your own efforts.Long lasting successful changes in habit always have a firm decision behind them.If you don’t feel ready to make daily changes in your life, continue reading and investigating what you want for your life, the information you collect will be useful in the near future.
Step 2:Examine your attitude and perspective toward life, health, change and service. Remember we need to love ourselves before we can love others, because we cannot give what we do not possess. The qualities of a healthy attitude include, but are not limited to, optimistic realism, flexibility, willingness to reframe and reappraise your life and the action-oriented approach required to effect change.
Step 3: Be open to learning new skills: awareness, self-assessment, and challenging or questioning professional opinion. These may not seem to be actual skills at first glance, but you do have to learn how master these three abilities for positive change to occur.
Step 4: Build a support system, your own personal “Dream Team” of knowledgeable, supportive people that
will help you achieve your goals. The real killer of new habits is the feeling of “going it alone.” Utilize health professionals for current research, proper risk assessment of your current health and advice on any new changes to your daily health routine.A good health professional should also encourage and help direct your new healthier lifestyle. Connect with friends and family that are supportive of your new health goals. My successful clients have a “wellness buddy” chosen from loved ones that take part in their journey and provide daily accountability to sticking to the plan!
Step 5: Create a clear plan of action together with your team of health professionals. The more detailed the plan, the higher rate of success you will enjoy.Create time in your day for your new habits.Examine your daily routine for time wasting activities and replace them with your new healthier activities.Review your progress frequently and adjust your plan of action as needed.
Keep in mind that life has a downward pull.Gravity and negativity work against our bodies, energies and spirits. It is easier to sit than stand up.It’s easier to say “I’ll start Monday” then to say “I’ll start right now!”Find ways to directly counteract and defend yourself against this pull and you will be amazed at the differences! You are worth the effort, commitment and investment it takes to properly manage your health and prevent
atrophy and disease.Do it now!Make the decision. Teach yourself what you need to know.Get up and make the call that you know you need to make.No body else will do it for you, you have to do it for yourself. There are people that can help you, but you have to reach for the phone. One thing I keep in mind as I serve others is “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear!”
Feel free to contact Catherine Skepetaris for any questions or comments:
how are you doing? I was away for a trip in Bosnia-Herzegovina (Ex-Yugoslavia) and am back again to "normal" business - now that the schools are closing. Will you be here in Athens all the summer or do you have some house in the countryside or at the sea?
What article is it that you found? I am interested to have a look at it.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
With love
Theresia

Here is an article I received from my Success Ezine and I thought I might share it since we hear a lot about physical health, but not so much on spiritual health. Read the study that was done, very interesting!
Be well,
Catherine
As you know I'm always looking for unique articles and tidbits that give you valuable information to help you win at life. Here's a little something from Zig Ziglar on cutting health care costs...
Hospitals can save big bucks by putting chaplains on their health care teams. Surprised? Hospitals are beginning to recognize that spiritual well-being can be crucial to the healing process. The Rev. George Frank, director of pastoral care at Victory Memorial Hospital in Waukegan, Illinois, says, "I don't think you can separate the physical from the emotional and spiritual. People are whole people. You can't treat the body without there being a spiritual or emotional impact."
I know that the skeptic might not agree with this idea philosophically, but I'm not talking about philosophy; I'm talking about facts. From 1991 to 1993, Dr. Elizabeth McSherry studied 700 coronary patients admitted to the Brockton/West Roxbury (Virginia) Center.
The group studied received some of the most costly and complicated procedures available such as bypass operations, valve replacements and open heart surgery. Also included in the study were veterans undergoing care for heart attacks and chronic heart disease. One group of patients had daily visits by a chaplain. The other group of patients saw a chaplain an average of three minutes during their entire hospital stay. The
study found that patients who had the most contact with the chaplains were released from the hospital an average of two days sooner than patients who did not receive regular visits. Dr. McSherry estimates that the cost of the chaplain visits was no more than $100 per patient. The savings, however, from letting a patient go home earlier amounted to as much as $4,000 a day. The group visited by chaplains also had fewer complications after surgery.
Sounds like a logical way to cut our health care costs dramatically. That approach might even be a good idea for all phases of our lives.
