CHAT TOPIC OF THE WEEK
AURAL REHABILITATION
We are excited to announce that our fifth year of on-line chats for
SLP students and professionals will resume on Monday, October 18, 2004.
As a reminder, our chats meet on Monday nights at 9:00pm EST, (8:00pm
Central, 7:00pm Mountain, and 6:00pm Pacific). Our first chat on Monday,
October 18th will be hosted by a panel of professionals who will address
the topic of Aural Rehabilitation with the Deaf and Hearing Impaired
Populations.
Susanne Scott, M.S., CCC-A, Alice Kreisle, M.A., CCC-A, Cynthia L. Hunnicutt,
M.S.,
CCC-SLP, and Jill B. Hammer, M.A., CCC-SLP will be joining us as guest hosts.
Susanne Scott, M.S., CCC-A has worked at Gallaudet University for 23 years.
She has extensive experience working with deaf and hard of hearing children
and their families. She has done numerous presentations at national
conventions/
conferences and written articles and books related to habitation with deaf
and
hard of hearing individuals from birth through adult. She has supervised and
taught graduate students in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language
Sciences in the area of aural rehabilitation. Ms. Scott is currently an
adjunct professor in the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences
where she teaches Clinical Applications of Sign Language classes for student
enrolled in the clinical doctorate of audiology program. She joined the
Cochlear
Implant Education Center at the Laurent Clerc Deaf Education Center at
Gallaudet as an outreach specialist in the fall of 2003
Alice Kreisle, M.A., CCC-A, has been an Educational Audiologist for 26 years.
She holds a Master's degree in Audiology from Indiana University and is
currently
enrolled in the Audiology doctoral program at University of Maryland. Ms.
Kreisle
was a charter member of the Educational Audiology Association. ; She
implemented the
first Educational Audiology program for the Dayton, Ohio Public Schools.
Other previous
work experience includes the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati
Center for
Developmental Disorders. Prior to her employment at the Clerc Center, Ms.
Kreisle set
up the Educational Audiology Program for the Northwest Regional Educati onal
Service
District in Oregon. Currently, she serves the birth through 3rd grade
children and
their families at Kendall School as well as supervising doctoral students
from
Gallaudet University and University of Maryland. Her special interests
include early
detection of hearing loss, electrophysiological testing of infants and
children, and
audiological assessment of children with sp ecial needs.
Cynthia L. Hunnicutt, M.S., CCC-SLP, received her BA at the University of
Virginia
in psychology and her MS at Arizona State University in Speech and Hearing
Science.
She worked in public schools in Phoenix, AZ and in Prince George's County, MD
for a
t otal of three years, with an emphasis in administering evaluations for
bilingual
students. She has presented on "Modifying Speech and Language Assessments
for Students
who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing". She is currently in her second year at the
Model Secondary
School for the Deaf at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, providing
assessments
and therapy in language development and speech production with deaf and hard
of hearing students.
Jill B. Hammer, M.A., CCC-SLP received her M.A. with a concentration in aural
habilitation from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. She has a B.A. in
psychology
from Clemson University. Jill completed her CFY at the Laurent Clerc
National Deaf
Education Center in 2003, providing assessme nt and treatment services to
deaf and hard
of hearing students at both the Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD)
and the Kendall Demonstration Elementary School (KDES). She is currently an SLP
at the Clerc Center
working in early intervention serving student ages birth through kindergarten.
We will be meeting in the chat room at 9:00 pm EST at
http://www.speech-languagepathologist.org (the chat room may be accessed by
clicking the "Chat Room"
button on the homepage of the website). The chat room page takes a while to
load up, so please be patient! There is no log-in or registration required to
use the chat room, though you do have to submit a name or "handle" to enter
(no spaces may be used in the name/handle). Please check the calendar on the
website for the current chat schedule. Any changes will be announced on the
forum message board. The chats last an hour, so please come on time! If you
have
any suggestions for chat guest hosts or topics of interest, please email us
or post a note on the message board. Chat transcripts will be archived on our
website so you will be able to read transcripts from chats you were unable to
attend.
