Voices,

Do you have any idea regarding the IDEA Law what happens if the school looses
its Speech Teacher? We have recently lost ours and school has just begun. They
say they are trying to hire someone this week, but I can't see how that can be
done so quickly. Meanwhile my son who has a diagnosis of Expressive Receptive
Language disorder will not have speech at school. He has been going to speech 2
times per week during the summer (private). Do you know how long I should give
them to hire someone before I need to say something??

we are trying to figure out how to get insurance to pay for our 7
yr. olds speechtherpy! he has been dinosed as aprixia& Dysaprixia&
he has balance problems & etc!!
We have been denied @ times!I dont think the insurance understands
that if he doesnt get treatment he will not get better!He talks on a
3 yrold level!!

Hi Kathy,

1. It is common for insurance policies not to cover speech therapy
except in the case of regaining speech after injury (such as a
stroke). Otherwise it is considered 'non-medical'
or 'educational'. However, as part of your appeal of the denial, if
you get a letter from the professional who diagnosed the apraxia
that it is a medical condition you may get the speech therapy
covered. Have you appealed yet?

2. Have you had your son assesed by your local school district and
does he have an IEP? School districts will provide speech therapy
for apraxia. You may also want to ask for an occupational therapy
assessment for the dyspraxia. Typical treatment for oral-motor
apraxia is 30 min. per day of individual speech therapy.

3. Sometimes state insurance law will mandate coverage for medical
conditions. Let me know what state you're in and I'll look around.

Hi,

Does your son have an IEP that says he will receive speech X times
per week? If so then they are out of compliance with the IEP and
they need to provide an alternate SLP. Perhaps there is one at
another school that can cover. I would write a letter (not call)
asking which SLP they will provide - even if it's a private SLP that
they contract with - until they hire a new one. Or, worst case, I
would keep track of every missed session and require them to make it
up with additional sessions once they do hire another teacher.

The only time insurance paid for our 9yo son's speech therapy was when he
was recovering from an illness that left him completely paralyzed when he
was 7, and he had to relearn how to eat and talk. He is hearing impaired, so
his speech has always been bad, but the clause in the insurance is that
therapy is only covered to restore abilities lost due to illness or
accident, but they do not pay if the child never had those abilities in the
first place. (This applies to physical therapy and occupational therapy,
too, BTW.) He received therapy through first steps until he was three, and
now receives therapy through the school system. Any additional therapy would
come out of our pocket.

If anyone would know a way around those restrictions, the therapist would.

It's amazing to me though that the insurance has no problems paying for an
older person who is dying to receive speech and occupational therapy, but
they will not pay for a child who still hasn't learned any of those skills
because of inborn disabilities....
