Take a deep breath and make sure ur somewhere u know ur safe. If u have any antianxiety meds that u can take for panic attacks take them. Focus on different items in the room until it passes. U will be ok. You have to focus on something other than the panic.

Subject: [unusualphobias] Re: RAIN THUNDER LIGHTING

The problem isn't that he/they fear thunder/lighting and tornadoes, these are natural fears (believe me, I live in NW Arknasas, which is a section of Tornado Alley, so its understandable).  The problem with me is just the opposite, thunder and lightning excite me, even tornadoes, which I've been IN 6, one which passed within yards of my car.  For some reason, maybe the possibility of dying or pain, it turns me on, and during the '90's I was in an F5 (which has a base of 1 mile for the twister).  Sadly it destroyed many homes, but thankfully few lives.

Along with Hypnosis, he probably needs an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant, also make sure the hypno-therapist, psychologist, or psychiatrist is a certitified hypno-therapist and is recognized and accredited.  With hypnosis, no matter what you believe, its not a quick fix, since all it does is take 'suggestable' people with problems and makes suggestions that they respond in a diifferent than usual manner.  This is why the anti-anxiety, anti-depressants are necessary, to aide the hypnotist.  You can't cure or make people behave in a way that they wouldn't normally behave under hypnosis, unless THEY WANT TO BELIEVE THAT IT WILL CHANGE THEM.  Belief in the power of hypnosis is key to letting it change you, which is why suggestable poeple are the best candidates, such as myself.  Ask your son, parents WHY it scares them and figure if its a rational response to a situation (i.e., they've been hit before) or whether movies, news, gossip is to blame.  Point out the odds of them actually being hit, meaning it will take one house and leave the on beside it alone is the norm, so not to worry.  Also if they have a basement/tornado shelter dug into the ground or built above, it can literally save their lives.  Standing in a doorway (it being reinforced), or putting a mattress over you in the Tub is another way to stay safe.  Also, having friends with a safe room, tornado shelter is great, most cities will let you in a "safe room" at the school, bank or a shelter that is built to withstand tornado strength winds, all they need to do is call City Hall, etc., and ask when and if they have one.  My town of 3,000 has 3 places that accept scared people into safe shelters, 1) the school safe room, 2) the court house basement and 3) one of the banks opens its vaults, its just up to us to chose.

Also, let them know its vital we have lightning, which puts nutrients in the soil where it strike, it also relieves differences in magnetism (one side having a positive charge and the other a negative, the strike equalizes each side, which is why large (tall) buildings shoud always have lightning rod, one church in town had its steeple blasted 3 times until they got the lightning rod, now it just runs down the steeple into the ground, not hurting anything).  They can also invest in a Government Radio Station (NOAA weather report, emergency broadcast systme) that keeps up in 'real time' on where the storm is and how strong it is and where.  Also nature abhors (hates) a vaccuum, which means that when lignting strikes at near light speed, it displaces the air, meaning that the air is 'gone' from where the lighning bolt went from one place to the other and thunder is just the air 'rushing' back to replace the area where there is now no air.  We always called thunder "god's tater wagon" rolling over and spilling the potatoes, lol.

Just let your son know that yes, bad things happen to good people, but you CAN protect yourself by being proactive and having a plan.  That way he won't feel helpless, and he can feel more in control by have at least 2-3 different things to do to feel safer, that way if one can't be done, there are other alternatives.

Good luck, I'm so glad you don't blame your son for an irrational fear, after all, he IS honestly terrified, and feeling out-of-control/helpless is one of the worst feelings ever.

Good luck,

D.W.

ps if its an emergency, just try hypnotizing him yourself.  Tell him the thunder is the sound of the waves rolling in onto a warm sandy golden beach, that he's at the edge of the shore/water in a tide-pool watching the little creatures, the sun is warm on his face, the sand under his feet feels like its dragging him onto the beach with the waves coming in and out, in and out, the water a beautiful blue and peaceful with surfers and warm sand.  Just keep this up monotonously, with a monotone, or take him to his favorite place in his own imagination, or have him walk down stairs, with each step he gets calmer and more tired, etc.

pps my fear is buttons, so I can understand why he's afraid seemingly without reason.

Anatidaephobia: (n) The fear that you are being watched by a duck. From the
Greek word "anatidae", meaning ducks, geese or swans and "phobos" meaning fear.

This article has quite a discussion of phobias, which I think would be of
interest to this group, and some personal stories involving the interaction
among a few. Well worth reading.

http://www.hotforwords.com/2009/08/30/nerd-word-of-the-day-anatidaephobia/

From the above article:
*clinophobia - fear of going to bed.
*katsaridaphobia- fear of cockroaches.
*isolophobic – fear of being alone.
*deipnophobia – fear of dining or dinner conversations.
*bathmophobia – fear of stairs or steep slopes.
*otisphobia – fear of Otis elevators
*consecotaleophobia – fear of chopsticks.
*genophobia – fear of sex.
*pinaciphobia – fear of lists.

Both my husband and my mother-in-law have an extreme fear of thunder and
lightening - and ESPECIALLY tornadoes. That is understandable: They have each
been in a house that was hit and damaged by a tornado.

My mother-in-law found that when she got a CD of thunder, wind, and rain sounds
and played it softly while she slept, it got better over time. My husband hasn't
gotten around to trying that. What we have tried is for me to hold him and
attempt to "protect" him from the "big bad storm". I don't know if it's that or
something else, but for the past few months he's slept through numerous storms
and didn't realize it.

Hooray for you on refusing Xanax!

lol thats good to know... and I know theyve hurt people.  I still remember watching a rescue 911 when i was little about a kid that got stuck on one... its not even that.  ive always been scared of them... its kind of embarassing... another phobia, well not so much i guess phobia as in weird, but i wont sit on a couch if the house isnt clean, or the people arent, or theres something on it.  ummm another one i have is, whenever i wash my face and have soap on it, im always TERRIFIED someones going to walk up behind me or something, because i refuse to open my eyes with soap on them.  i can just SEE someone walking up behind me when i have it on my face... im a freak, LOL!

actually, i dont' think this is an unreasonable phobia. They can be scary, and i assist public pool inspectors. They have hurt people.
This year all public pools had to have new drains put in by the miranda act, enacted by congress last fall. Not only do they prevent you from gettings sucked down, there is a mechanism that shuts down the pump, and  another drain has to be put in to avert the suction. So at least find a little comfort that a lot of technology has been put in place to prevent people from getting stuck on them.

And until I ran into the unusualphobias. com site, i thought i was alone. Like some of the people on the site, I always walk around and look into the pool so i know where the drain is before getting in. Its funny, because just this morning, i was at the gym, and went into the pool area -- i stood there looking into the pool to see if i could find the drain (i didnt see one) and an elderly lady said "trying to decide whether or not to get in?" and i just said yeah and quickly walked out. it really is embarassing at times. my fiance picks on me. if were in a pool, he'll go down to the deep end and touch it and make me freak out. i LOVE to swim, and i love pools - if i swim to the deep end, ill do everything i can to avoid going near the drain -- ill also swim as fast as possible down to the area and back. it really is awful!! i guess its called "drainophobia" from what ive seen (which isnt much) and out of all the crazy phobias out there, i cant believe there isnt more people who have posted about this! when i was younger (im 24 now) i went to a state park here in FL that had a GIGANTIC pool.... it was probably like kidney shaped but it was just as big or bigger than a olympic size... the drain in the center was this large square / rectangle shaped black hole with the grates over it... i was already scared of them and this made it worse. ever since then -- the black square ones, the nicer looking white square ones, or the round ones -- i freak out. i cant take it. its only pool and hut tub drains, not sink or anything like that. im scared of "old pools" too. if theyre real old, and have like chipping bottoms, or just LOOK old, i get skeeved.

ball and loft insulation. I don't know anyone who has got this type of phobia or
what its called, and when i asked the GP about sorting it out he laughed.

Am I the only one with this type of fear or can someone else relate?
Does it have a name?

Thankyou for any replies

I hate to wear rings. I must constantly keep checking to be sure that
they still go over my knuckle. Ironically, the fear seems to swell
my finger causing it to get stuck. Perhaps forever: thats the real
fear.

I have this cotton problem too. I dont mind waering it, but I have problems
sorting warm cotton sox after laundry, and the absolute worst thing: If I put a
dry cotton shirt next to my teeth and such in. I am cringing now to even think
about it.

My name is Nicole and I work for a nationally syndicated television show in New
York!

I am in the process of researching for our annual Phobia show and was wondering
if you or someone you know inside the support group is looking for professional
help dealing with their specific fear.

In the past we have had a variety of guests in search for help with phobias
including but not limited to; certain animals and insects such as dogs, cats,
bugs, frogs; objects such as cotton, tin foil, gum and even jello; or general
fears such as fear of flying or fear of heights.

Please get back to me at AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED! Our show is
set to start taping Tuesday so urgency is a issue!

Thank you so much and I look forward to talking to you!

Hi everyone.

My Name is Sammy Dedicoat. I am a third year student at Staffordshire
University.

I am doing my Journalism Dissertation on Unusual Fears and Phobias. I
would like to talk to you.

I need six people who are willing to let me interview them whether it
be through email, over the phone or in person.

As part of the dissertation we have to send them to publications to
see if our work is publishable. For those of you willing to
participate you must also be willing to have other people read about
your fear and phobia (If my work is published). I plan to send my
work to health magazines, fear and phobia websites and also national
newspapers so you really will be helping others around the country.

There is only one disadvantage and that is that you have to be over
the age of 18 (sorry for those of you under 18)

If anyone is willing to help me then it would be really appreciated-
i need your help.

If your interested then please contact me: sdedicoat@... or by
phone on 07854789599.

Many Thanks for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yeah. God. I don't know if that requires a phobia. That's just

I know exactly how you feel! Several psychiatrists I've seen as well
as members of my own family think I'm making my phobia up. People
also try to scare me. My own grandmother left a people magazine out
(on purpose) with one of the actors I'm afraid of on it just to see
how I would react. I really find it disgusting how just because we
are scared of unusual things, people think it's okay to belittle us.
Like you, I would go out of my way not to scare someone if they were
afraid of something unusual.

Hello, you replied to my story about my phobia of wrist and I'm glad
that we both know we're not alone. Like you said, we have many of the
same problems. When I worte my post, i was hoping someone else with
my problem would reply to it. Even though I've read of other rare
cases of people talking abou tit online, I still wanted to actually
communicate with them. Not just read about it, ya know? I'm sorry
that you have to face the same things I do, but it's easier for me to
know that there are others, so I hope it helps you too. Just know
that things can change and some day , hopefully, we both wat have
this irrational fear.

I guess it would be easiest for me to copy and paste some of what I
typed for my doctors. I have a diagnosed phobia of two certain actors
(no joke unfortunetly).

I've been suffering from this condition for almost 12 years now(I'm
19 just to let you all know). I'm getting to the point where I can't
take it anymore, and I don't know what to do. I started watching a
TV show(I don't feel comfortable putting what show at this point)
when I was 8. From the very FIRST time I saw two of the actors(the
main actors), I was terrified of the way they looked. Even though I
was so scared for some reason I could not stop watching the show.
Every episode I watched caused me to have an increased heart rate,
and I would start sweating buckets, I also of course had a feeling of
fear. I didn't start having full blown panics(sweating, crying,
increased heart rate, feeling like I was going to pass out, chest
pressure, full blown terror) until a couple of months after the show
went off of the air. I still suffer from panic attacks whenever I see
or hear of these two actors(or the show). I'm so bad I have to check
movie cast lists on IMDB before I go see any movie. I HAVE to see the
opening credits for TV shows to make sure neither of them or someone
else from the show is guest starring on what I'm watching. I can't
work anywhere that I could come into contact with magazines, a TV, or
the radio(songs that were played on the show make me flash back to
certain episodes, I'm also very scared that I will hear celebrity
gossip about one of them.). At times I flash back PTSD style to
certain episodes(with no music trigger), I have no control over this,
and it's happening so often that I've considered suicide(although
I've never developed a plan). The past 6 months have been a nightmare
for me. The really odd thing about this all, is it's not just the two
above mentioned actors. I'm scared of the way 5 other actors look as
well. I was scared of one of the other 5 actors BEFORE I was scared
of the two actors from the show. I have sought professional help, but
my psychologist has no idea what could be causing this. I'm beginning
to wonder if maybe the part of my brain that controls fear could be
going hay wire. That's the only logical explanation I can come up
with. I've seen several psychiatrists and only one of them has
believed me(and she barely believes me at that). My psychologist
takes me seriously but I'm way out of his league and he doesn't know
how to properly help me. I'm sure this is way more info then you all
needed to know, but I needed to vent.

I don't have the wrist phobia, but my phobia is also so unusual that
people try to scare me with it. I'm scared of sloths, as in the three-

so slowly that moss grows on them. I don't know if people think I'm
