From the time I was about 10 years old, I could not wear short sleeve
shirts and I would button them up to my neck even in the hottest
Summer weather. This destroyed my social life in school as you could
well imagine. I am almost 42 now and have finally begun to dress
appropriately without fear. I have been treated for Bipolar
Disorder, OCD, and Anxiety. It has taken several years to overcome
this problem. Has anyone experienced this?

i get so freaked out when i'm playing a game where i have to get
passed them, they're always sneaking up on me and i jump when they
come into view. I have to play the level with the sound off.
(Indiana Jones for ps2 is the worst, it has both)

Also I have a fear that an alien is always standing behind me when
I'm watching tv. Only tv, that's wierd, as if that's not wierd in
itself. I've pushed my chair up to a wall, but i still have to look
to my side every now and then.

And my worst phobia is of bones being broken. It started like 6
years ago when i was watching a 49er game and ken nortan went helmet
first into bryant youngs leg and it bent backwords, i through up on
the spot.

Valid observation - I appreciate your input. Maybe I am delusional,
but they scare me to the point where I lose all ability to reason. I
have anxiety attacks, which turn to anger.

Don't ask me why, but I have a strong coughing phobia. Like if
someone is coughing loudly, my body will "jolt" and my heart will
start racing. It's like an adrenaline rush, but not a good one. I
know, it's very strange. And the stranger thing is that it's come
about in the last 4 or 5 months. Thoughts on this?? Thanks!

Phobias are something we all have here but we have to accept that we are the ones with the problem. This is an irrational fear that you have along with delusions which have no basis in reality. These are the type of delusions which could be associated with schizophrenia or even paranoid schizophrenia. I'm not attacking you, or making fun of you, I am very serious that I think you need to see a psychiatrist. This is more than a phobia that you are suffering.

Try to think about it logically if you can, if there were extraterrestrials doing genetic modifications, WHY would they create small ppl? Wouldn't they create bigger and stronger ppl or ppl with special powers (like the Midwich Cuckoos) if they wanted to destroy the rest of us?

People think I'm nuts...I may be.  I feel my fear and frustration
over midgets is justified.  Between me, my parents, girlfriend and
close friends, we have seen a total of 31 midgets since Decmeber 1,
2003.  Trust me, I have plenty to do with my time, so I am
definately not making any of this up.  14 in December and 17 in
January.  None in February thankfully.

I still insist they are genetic fabrications stemming from some kind
of extraterrestrial biological entity, produced for the destruction
of mankind and a repopulation of this planet.

I'm 18 now. I have the the same phobia. It's nice to hear that I'm
not the only one. I have been looking all over the place to find
what this is called. Everytime I see a costume character I start to
breathe hard, I feel like I'm going to pass out, and also I feel like
my stomach just dropped. When I'm with my family or my boyfriend
they have to stand on the side the character is on. I use them like
a guard or something. They also have to go up to them and tell them
to stay away from me. This is really embarrassing because of my
age. Can anyone tell me what this has a name.

i've been lookin around to see if there's a term for it..or even
anybody else that shares this very unusual phobia..

i have a very real fear of cheese..particularly melted cheese..i
don't really mind cheese in packages..tightly sealed packages..it's
just when cheese is just..out there..all nasty and yellow..haha..

but newayz..it makes me very nervous..i gag..i can't look at it..i
can't touch it..i don't like it near me..i don't like to think about
it..i've always hated cheese..but it wasn't until about 5 or 6 years
ago that i started being sorta..scared of it..i caught my mom puttin
cheese in the corn that she was cooking for dinner..and i suppose
that's where it started..

i guess this is becoming a problem because..well..it's always been
my dream to be a chef..i love cooking..as long as it doesn't involve
cheese..but i know when i become a chef..someone..one day..is gonna
want something with cheese in it..so..if anybody has this fear
now..or had the fear in the past..could ya lemme know how you cope
(d)?

p.s. - i also have a mild fear of midgets..not as bad as the cheese
thing..they just make me really nervous..and i feel bad for acting
all skiddish around them.. :( anybody else have this fear? i know i
can't be alone in these phobias..

newayz..anything that could help me deal with my phobias would be
appreciated..thanx :(

I was pondering my lifelong fear of swimming pools this week and
decided to do a websearch. Only one relevant site came up and that
was unusualphobias, and I was shocked that several other people have
this fear too - all my life people have looked at me incredulously as
if I am some sort of loony when I've told them about it.

You wouldn't think it would affect your life that much, but it does.
For instance, on holiday I really can't enjoy the pool like other
people can because I'm just constantly worrying. I can't walk round
it day or night, and if my room overlooks it then god help me.

A lot of other submitters on the website said it was the drains
they're scared of, and that's the main thing for me, but basically
it's everything about the bottom of the pool that terrifies me. I'm
not keen on tiles/mosaics/grids in general, and coupled with the
drains it just adds up to one big nightmare.

I don't know where it stems from and I don't know how to get rid of
it, but I'd love to. I conquered a fear of spiders by going round
Australia and having to face them, but I really can't imagine forcing
myself to face a swimming pool - it just doesn't seem worth the risk!

Also, my brother is scared of Nodding Donkeys and, well, mining
equipment in general - particularly if it's disused or silhouetted.
I can sort of see where he's coming from but I just wondered if
anyone else has experienced the same fear?

Thanks,
Katie (UK)

Hello. I am currently developing a short subject documentary called

onions, etc...
If you have such a phobia and would like to be interviewed, please

The below email came to me today. He requested I post this for him:

Hi. My name is Lewis Earnest and I'm a third year medical student
interested in writing an article on the fear of cotton balls. Some
of the postings people have put up are extremely interesting and i'm
wondering if you can e-mail me with some more stories. Of course, I
would not use any real names in the article. Also can you answer
some questions for me including: do you have any idea where this
fear came from?, do you remember when you first started fearing
cotton balls?, what happens to you when you see, are touched, or
even think about cottton balls?, how does it affect your life?, what
lengths do you go to avoid cotton balls?, do many of your friends
know about your phobia and how do people react upon finding out?.
You can e-mail me at ldearnest@.... Title the e-mail "cotton
ball phobia" so I know its not a junk e-mail. Thanks so much and I
look forward to hearing from some of yall.

I have a similar problem and wanted to know if you shared any of these
symptoms. I remember exactly when my aversion to having my photo taken
began. It was during a large quarterly meeting of about 200 people in
October 1998. I was recognized for a significant accomplishment by my
employer and was asked to come forward to accept a tall 'director's chair' they
presented to me. When I sat in it with a big thumbs up on both hands, I
suddenly became aware of all the people staring at me and I could not hold
my smile. I felt like (for lack of a better description) that I was getting too
many
G forces...like I was going too fast in a race car...and I couldn't stand to
look at
the camera. Instead I got a weird grimmace on my face, turned my head and
pretended to cough, but despite my efforts to cover it, I know I looked strange
anyway. I avoid photographs and photographers; group photos are also
difficult because everyone else is smiling, but not me. I'm just trying not to
look
stupid. I have even demonstrated this phobia in front of 1,000+ people at a
couple of awards shows! I have not yet sought counseling but I don't know
what to call it...it's hard to describe. This even happens to me in casual
business situations at parties and small events. I don't have any problem with
family photos, just business photos. Sometimes I can control it if I don't
smile,
but sometimes I can't. This is a big problem for me considering that I have a
high-profile job. Sorry to unload on you, but you touched on a phobia that I
am experiencing and don't know how to deal with. Have you found a name for
this disorder? (I haven't and I've looked). Have you experienced any of my
symptoms/reactions? Are there any websites addressing this phobia? I'm
asking you or anyone who happens to read this email. Thanks for listening!

I have a similar fear, I suppose. It's not as much concerning the fingernails themselves. It's just what you do with them. I can't scrape my fingernail across unfinished wood (especially clarinet reeds) or concrete or chalkboards without nearly vomiting or doing so entirely. I don't know why, though.

LOL Right now my fear is getting butterflies in my stomach. When I get
those I start freaking out...not really a phobia tho. I used to be scared
of carwashes (until I was 8 years old)

It's really weird, and I've never known anyone or heard of anyone who
had this. If my fingernails get that white tip on it, I have to pick
it off ASAP. I get extremely nervous and fidgety if I don't pick my
fingernail off (and toenails, too). And then when I do pick it off,
it's like a release. I have picked my nails so short that they bleed
and hurt. Feel free to respond with your comments.

Also, for a short time, I had this fear of tape sticking to toilet
paper.

Thank you all for your comments, and 'sorry's' for the delayed
posting (tis the season to be out-of-town).

My reason for the 'preferably a Christian' remark was largely
covered by DeeD's suppositions (below). More specifically, though,
I have long intended to include Scriptures on the
www.unusualphobias.com website, since it has a LOT to say about
fear, phobias, anxiety, etc.

I am an ex-phobic, myself. More than one of those on the site is
(was) mine. I'm degreed in Psychology -- but I am a Christian
first. In my view, I must do all things for the love of God first,
and for the love of other second, or I am a fool.

If I were to request the help of non-Christians, it might eventually
make them uncomfortable (at best). ;)

oh my gosh!!! Me too!!! Finally, i've found someone who has the same
phobia as i do. The sight of Chuck E. Cheese sends me screaming. I
have always been terrified of costumed characters. Isn't it
embarassing. my Mom's like, "You are way too old to still be afraid
of Chuck E. Cheese." But i can't help it!

Well I do not want to speak for the owner, but this shows IMHO an illegimate division of life into the "religious" and the "nonreligious" and for a Christian that is not an option.  If the owner is a Christian, it is perfectly understandable that in partnership they would want one who shares their heart at the most foundational level.  It is a false dichtomony that says a phobia site has nothing to do with one's religion.  That is not an option for a Christian.  For a Christian everything has everything to do with one's religion.  For example, though this may be more understandable, I own www.theologyweb.com.  We do not only discuss theology, but discuss politics, and yes, even phobias.  However, to be a member of leadership you must be a Christian who affirms the essentials of the faith.  Now yes we are a theology site, but in my personal life, I try to do my partnerships with Christians.

hi- i have a different fear but i do have a friend with a similar fear.  She can't stand the sight of viens,  on others and herself.  she litterally feels sick when yu point one out or if she mistakingly sees her own.  She says she doesn't know why either.  She says it just doesn't seem right to her to have all these viens inside us and then have to see and touch them.  She also can't stand giving blood.  I feel for yu cause i see how she suffers too.  Good luck.  Nancy-

I have a fear that no one has ever heard of.  I am painfully afraid of my wrists and veins.  Mainly the ones in my wrist.  I can't look at them, I can't have them touched, I can't have other objects touching them (including shirts that are tight on the wrist, jewelry, etc.), I can't even see someone on tv doing something to that body part.  I used to beat up nurses when they would come to do a blood test.  I've had thousands of blood draws at this point, and I have still NEVER looked.  I can't handle it.  I have anxiety attacks from it.  What can I do to stop this?  B word people, perhaps you can help me!!!  It is really starting to interfere with my life!  Please someone help!

I was wondering that too, in my opinion the religion of the person should really be irrelevant as the site is about phobias. I'm vegan and I can assure anyone that I feel very strongly about my beliefs about animal rights and generally about respecting living things, exactly the way lots of people feel about their religion, but if I was running some website on some other interest unconnected to that, I certainly would not require someone helping me to necessarily be vegan or even vegetarian at all! I would regard them as separate areas of my life and would work with non-veggie ppl on other issues.

But then it is Jarvis' site so it's not up to me, just expressing my opinion.

And really, is there a "technical" name for the fear of drains?
