Re: [unusualphobias] static electricty shock phobia

That is interesting.  I know what you mean about those shocks...  They really do hurt sometimes.  I used to get shocked EVERY time I opened a door, touched a file cabinet handle or anything at work.  Sometimes, the shock was so loud that you could actually hear it.  Came to a point to where I would touch something with my elbow first, to give my elbow the shock.  Then grab it with my hand.  Seems like my elbow took the shocks better than my hand did.

I have a phobia of static electricity shocks. This has also led to a fear of touching metal because metal seems to have a high percentage of giving static shocks. Metal doorknobs????? - oh goodness - you'll love this one - before touching a metal doorknob, I punch my right fist into my left palm twice and then i'll touch a wooden table or something non-metallic, then i'll rapidly, violently grab the metal doorknob as my whole body and mind tense up. It seems like when I touch metal slowly that's when shocks happen, but if I grab rapidly & violently, then shocks hardly happen. The mild ones are disturbing enough, but the mega shocks that physically HURT - oh goodness! don't even go there. they really do hurt sometimes. it would be interesting to hear from others who share this with me

Erin, thanks. One useful coping method is to touch metal with a housekey - Alot of times you'll see a fast blue zap (the key takes the shock) and sometimes it...
