Hi Shelli...my name is Judy and I had the same surgery 7yrs ago. I know it all seems a little overwhelming but believe me it will all settle down (in time) and become second nature to your mom. The question os soreness. There are several layers of tissue in that area and as it heals from the inside out, it will take a few months for it to heal completely. You can use a air cushion for added comfort until then. I had to take mine to work with me when I returned. It was a constant companion for quite a while. But, (no pun intented) it will heal...as to what to do after changing the bag. I use a zip loc bag for everything I want to discard. Works fine. Others may have suggestions. Empting when out at the Mall, etc. just use the toilet (same as home) I carry a small spray bottle in my purse ( to spare others the odor) When away from home, or traveling, take your kit filled with everything you need, in case of problem. That is a little troublesome, but, I've found
that it pays to do it. Hope all goes well for your mom. Believe me, it does get easier with time, and it's way bettter than the alternative...God's blessings to you both....Judy ord)" <lynmengroup@...> wrote:
Hi, my name is Shelli. My mother was diagnosed with rectal cancer
earlier this year and had colonostomy surgery over 2 weeks ago.
She is recuperating, having some difficulties and worried about her
future.
Some issues that she really needs help with are:
Soreness on her bottom area from surgery
"Gas" noises from her bag (Is there a bag that doesn't make as much
noise?)
The best way to disgard the waste and clean the bag when necessary
How do you empty your bag when away from home? Do you empty into a
Ziplock type bag; a cup; the toilet? How?
And, what type of products do you take with you when you are away
from home (cleaners, squirt bottle, etc.)
Thank you so much for all your help. I am planning on getting her
involved with the Ostomy Association in our area, but they only meet
once a month.
Take care,
Shelli
