Hi Judy and Alan,
You probably aren't over your surgery good yet if it is just since December but I know you are as anxious as I was to get to a norm. But, #1-everyone's norm is different & #2-You still have the same ole' gut you had before, just less. Chances are, what causes diarreah now was a culprit in the past. The trick is now to eat small amounts. You can tell the next what the culprit actually was by checking your output. I figure this; our colons and our digestive tracts are in such a happy state from gaining their freedom that they are going to do just about as they please for a while. Mine is a year old now and it is still happy.
I have found that a loose stool is easier to conceal than a firm one when You get caught out away from home. You can find out a lot about the foods you eat by visiting the American Ostomy Association and Evansville Indiana Ostomy Chapter and Shaz's Ostomy web sites.
What can I eat? Will I need to change my diet?
There may be some modifications in your diet according to the type of ostomy surgery.
People with colostomy and ileostomy surgery should return to their normal diet after a period of adjustment. Introduce foods back into your diet a little at a time and monitor the effect of each food on the ostomy function. Chew your food well and drink plenty of fluids. Some less digestible or high roughage foods are more likely to create potential for blockage problems (i.e., corn, coconut, mushrooms, nuts, raw fruits and vegetables).
