Hi Barb, my name is Judy and we only joined this week. I won't be any help with your questions, we have more questions than answers at the moment. My husband had diverticulitis with peritonitis 2 and half weeks ago and surgery just on two weeks ago, he came home on Christmas Day with a colostomy. He had bowel cancer 18 mths ago but avoided the colostomy that time. This is not really related to the first surgery. He is still trying to recover from the surgery really and I am the one doing the research, I chose the UK group because he was born in London but has lived in Australia for 33 years. I was born in Sydney and we met there, we have three sons and one grandson and we have all lived in Adelaide for 18 years. Can I ask, do you irrigate rather than using a bag by choice? I hope there is someone who can help you with your questions. I did find this webpage which has something about irrigation, might help. http://www.ostomates.org/irrigation.html To be honest I haven't read all there is in the site yet. Bye Judy

Subject: [UK Ostomy Support ] greetings from new member Barb.....and question about irrigation
Hello all.....Just joined in the last week, so hope this is an
appropriate way to
post a question to anyone wanting to give feedback.
I've had a sigmoid colostomy for over 3 years, and usually irrigate
every other
day. Main reason for not irrigating every day is my dislike for the
whole
procedure in general, and the fact that I have terrible pain (spinal
cord injury,
etc.) that makes the simple activity incredibly pa
inful-stressful-irritating, etc. on
my body.
ANYWAY....do people have thoughts on the pros and cons of irrigating
every
other day? Do those that irrigate generally do it every day? I'm just
wondering.....
Thanks in advance for any help. I emerged from the bathroom the other
day,
in a miserable mood, and started to tell my husband about it (he's
really
tremendously supportive..) and his answer was basically..."Sounds
like you
need a support group".
So, here I am...Happy New Year to all, by the way, from sunny arizona,
Cheers, Barb
