Kindness
"If you are the recipient, giver or observer of an act of kindness,
your serotonin levels are increased and your immune system is
strengthened."
Wayne Dyer
Sometimes we can be filled with a most incredible feeling of joy
simply by witnessing an act of kindness. We don't need to be active
with anything but our eyes and our hearts to feel an indescribable
fullness. This feeling may be accompanied by a lump in our throat
and or tears in our eyes. I experienced all of this one day I
stopped behind a school bus as a small child got off and ran into the
arms of her grinning father.
Another time, when I was going through a particularly painful
period, my son-in-law presented me with a bird house which he had
built and painted purple, my very favorite color. Instant tears
surprised me as my heart burst with love and gratitude.
Watch someone's face as you surprise them with an unexpected
gift or compliment. No matter what mood you might be in at the time,
you are filled with joy or love or gratitude, resulting in a flow of
feel-good chemicals spreading everywhere and affecting you mentally,
physically and spiritually.
It feels so good to know that when I practice kindness I not only
feel good but I am strengthening my immune system at the same time.
Today I will take the time to do something good for someone.
With love and peace,
Ruth

Just For Today
July 6 "I'm
Sorry"
"The main thing the Eighth Step does for us is to help build awareness
that, little by little, we are gaining new attitudes about ourselves and
how we deal with other people." Basic Text, p.38
To say "I'm sorry" probably isn't such a foreign idea to most of us. In
our active addiction, it may have been a very familiar phrase. We were
always telling people how sorry we were, and were probably deeply
surprised when someone, tired of our meaningless apologies,
responded with, "You sure are. In fact, you're the sorriest excuse for…"
That may have been our first clue that an "I'm sorry" didn't really make
any difference to those we harmed, especially when we both knew that
we'd just do the same thing again.
Many of us thought that making amends would be another "I'm sorry'
However, the action we take in those steps is entirely different. Making
amends means to make changes and, above all, to make the situation
right. If we stole money, we don't just say "I'm sorry. I'll never do
it again
now that I'm clean' We pay the money back. If we neglected or abused
our families, we don't just apologize. We begin to treat them with
respect.
Amending our behavior and the way we treat ourselves and others is
the whole purpose of working the steps. We're no longer just "sorry";
we're responsible.
Just for today: I accept responsibility for myself and my recovery.
Today, I will amend some particular thing I'm sorry for. pg. 196

Today, I'm Free
This brought me to the good healthy realization that there were plenty
of situations left in the world over which I had no personal power --
that if I was so ready to admit that to be the case with alcohol so I
must
make the same admission with respect to much else. I would have to
be still and know that He, not I, was God.
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 114
I am learning to practice acceptance in all circumstances of my life, so
that I may enjoy peace of mind. At one time life was a constant battle
because I felt I had to go through each day fighting myself, and
everyone else. Eventually, this became a losing battle. I ended up
getting drunk and crying over my misery. When I began to let go and
let God take over my life I began to have peace of mind. Today, I am
free. I do not have to fight anybody or anything anymore.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ July 6th
Thought for the Day
We tried to study our alcoholic problem, wondering what was
the cause of our strange obsession. Many of us took special
treatments, hospitalization, even confinement in institutions.
In every case, the relief was only temporary. We tried
through crazy excuses to convince ourselves that we knew
why we drank, but we went on regardless. Finally drinking
had gone far beyond even a habit. We had become alcoholics,
men and women who had been destroying themselves against
their own will. Am I completely free from my alcoholic
obsession?
Meditation for the Day
"Ask and ye shall receive." Never let yourself think you cannot
do something useful or that you never will be able to accomplish
a useful task. The fact is that you can do practically anything in
the field of human relationships, if you are willing to call on
God's supply of strength. The supply may not be immediately
available, because you may not be entirely ready to receive it.
But it will surely come when you are properly prepared for it.
As you grow spiritually, a feeling of being plentifully supplied
by God's strength will possess you and you will be able to
accomplish many useful things.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may claim God's supply of strength by my faith in
Him. I pray that it shall be given to me according to my faith.

Today's Thought
JULY 06
You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©
Step Seven
Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.
--Step Seven of Al-Anon
In the Sixth and Seventh Steps of the program, we become willing
to let go of our defects of character - issues, behaviors, old
feelings, unresolved grief, and beliefs that are blocking us from
the joy that is ours. Then we ask God to take them from us.
Isn't that simple? We don't have to contort ourselves to make
ourselves change. We don't have to force change. For once, we
don't have to "do it ourselves." All we have to do is strive for an
attitude of willingness and humility. All we have to do is ask God
for what we want and need, and then trust God to do for us that
which we cannot do and do not have to do for ourselves.
We do not have to watch with bated breath for how and when we
shall change. This is not a self-help program. In this miraculous
and effective program that has brought about recovery and change
for millions, we become changed by working the Steps.
Today, God, help me surrender to recovery and to the process by
which I become changed. Help me focus on the Step I need. Help
me do my part, relax, and allow the rest to happen.

The Power Of Gratitude Slowing Down to Appreciate Life
by Lynn A. Robinson, M.Ed.
We human beings are odd creatures. Have you ever noticed that when you
finally reach a goal, you briefly congratulate yourself, sigh with
satisfaction and then immediately set about wanting something new and
different? There's nothing inherently wrong with that. We seem to be
hard-wired to achieve goals, want more, and look to the future. The
problem comes when you don't appreciate what you have, where you are
and what you've achieved. If you find that you're in a constant state
of dissatisfaction with your life, you're not sending messages to the
Universe that will attract a life of blessings.
You're probably familiar with the notion that happiness lies within.
It's not guaranteed by a new job, more money, getting married (or
divorced!), having children or being able to retire. Any happiness,
bliss, or peace that you experience is brought about by your attitude,
thoughts and beliefs. No new event or circumstance will secure your
satisfaction; how you think and feel about the new circumstance will.
What is in your life right now that you feel grateful for? Your
intuition will constantly provide you with information about how to
create a life you love when you begin to focus on appreciation. It
will give you nudges, hints, impulses, feelings, hunches and dreams to
move you in the right direction. In order to receive this Divine
input, it requires that you have a channel that's open to accepting
its messages.
If you're constantly stressed and always wishing for more time, money,
freedom, energy -- fill in the blank -- you need to create some time
for what I call "sacred idleness." All those signs of stress are
signals from your intuition that it's time to slow down... take a
comfort break... give yourself a few hours or days off to reflect on
your life.
Create a sacred space. Do you have a favorite spot where you feel
relaxed and at peace? It may be in your own home -- in your favorite
chair, sitting on the porch, or even in your bathtub. Perhaps it's
outside your home. There is a wide, slow moving river that spills over
a dam a short drive from my house. I go there often with a picnic
lunch and sit and watch the ducks and geese float gently in the stream.
If you don't have your own special place, make it your goal this week
to find one. Bring this book or your journal. What I want you to do is
very simple. Just be present. Observe what's around you. Take in your
environment. Breathe. Relax. Just be with yourself and your
surroundings. Slow down. If you find your mind wandering. Notice it
and simply bring it back to the present moment. Make time for sacred
idleness. Feel your bliss.
Intuitive ideas and thoughts often come flooding in when we take the
time to slow down. This month ask yourself some questions:
What are you grateful for?
What can you do to create quiet, spiritual time in your life?
What do you truly want?
What fills your soul?
What can you let go of?
What are the blessings in your life?
These are all questions to ask your intuitive guidance system. Listen
to the answers, reflect, and take action. Taking the time to meditate,
write and dream new dreams will pay off in a big way. It's the first
step in creating a life you love.

Risk
Two Seeds lay side by side in
the fertile Spring soil.
The First Seed said,
"I want to grow!
I want to send my roots deep into the
soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts
through the earth's crust above me . . .
I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners
to announce the arrival of Spring. I want to
feel the warmth of the sun on my face and
the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!"
And so she grew.
The Second Seed said,
"I am afraid!
If I send my roots into the ground below,
I don't know what I will encounter in the
dark. If I push my way through the hard
soil above me I may damage my delicate
sprouts . . . what if I let my buds open
and a snail tries to eat them? And if I
were to open my blossoms, a small
child may pull me from the ground. No,
it is much better for me to wait until it is safe."
And so she waited.
A yard Hen, scratching around for food
in the early Spring ground, found the
waiting seed and promptly ate it.
Those of us who refuse to risk and
grow, get swallowed up by life.

Worth
You cannot define my worth.
I've been "off the charts" since birth.
When God made me, He broke the mold.
I'm irreplaceable and priceless... this I know.
You can't define my worth.
You can't imagine my worth.
Though you'll conjecture and query, you'll only grow weary.
You'll resign to the conclusion that value is illusion.
I'm a menu without prices, a piece of fine artwork.
You can't imagine my worth.
You can't diminish my worth.
Comparing me to someone else knocks us both off the shelf.
Because of how I was made, my merit won't fade.
I'm made in God's image, so I can't be diminished.
You simply can't undermine my worth!

Billy
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen
rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving
milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It
was a dry season that would bankrupt seven farmers before it was
through. Every day, my husband and his brothers would go about the
arduous process of trying to get water to the fields. Lately this
process had involved taking a truck to the local water rendering plant
and filling it up with water. But severe rationing had cut everyone
off.
If we didn't see some rain soon...we would lose everything. It was on
this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the
only miracle I have seen with my own eyes.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers
when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He
wasn't walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a
serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking
with a great effort...trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after
he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the
house. I went back to making sandwiches; thinking that whatever task
he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however, he was once
again walking in that slow purposeful stride toward the woods. This
activity went on for an hour: walk carefully to the woods, run back to
the house. Finally I couldn't take it any longer and I crept out of the
house and followed him on his journey (being very careful not to be
seen...as he was obviously doing important work and didn't need his
Mommy checking up on him). He was cupping both hands in front of him
as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in
them...
maybe two or three tablespoons were held in his tiny hands. I sneaked
close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little
face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much higher purpose.
As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer loomed in front of him. Billy walked right up to
them. I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck with
elaborate antlers was dangerously close. But the buck did not threaten
him...he didn't even move as Billy knelt down. And I saw a tiny fawn
laying on the ground, obviously suffering from dehydration and heat
exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped
in my beautiful boy's hand.
When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house
and I hid behind a tree. I followed him back to the house; to a spigot
that we had shut off the water to. Billy opened it all the way up and
a small trickle began to creep out. He knelt there, letting the drip
drip
slowly fill up his makeshift "cup", as the sun beat down on his little
back.
And it came clear to me. The trouble he had gotten into for playing
with the hose the week before. The lecture he had received about
the importance of not wasting water. The reason he didn't ask me to
help him.
It took almost twenty minutes for the drops to fill his hands. When
he stood up and began the trek back, I was there in front of him. His
little eyes just filled with tears. "I'm not wasting", was all he said.
As he began his walk, I joined him...with a small pot of water from the
kitchen.
I let him tend to the fawn. I stayed away. It was his job. I stood
on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have
ever known working so hard to save another life. As the tears that
rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined
by other drops...and more drops...and more. I looked up at the sky. It
was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride.
Some will probably say that this was all just a huge coincidence.
That
miracles don't really exist. That it was bound to rain sometime. And I
can't argue with that...I'm not going to try. All I can say is that the
rain that came that day saved our farm...just like that actions of one
little boy saved another.
To honor the memory of my beautiful Billy, who was taken from me
much too soon.... But not before showing me the true face of God, in a
little sunburned body.

poem from a friend in treatment
Fear of Flying
Delusional, illusional, mostly confusional,
I find myself in the usual destructive state of mind;
And in my mind is were I find,
The progressive and aggressive need for another high;
But in that high I never fly,
I only drag the ground;
Yet still I cling, like a hopeless fiend,
And I often wonder why;
In triple beams and bottled schemes,
No comfort I will find;
Only God it seems, can fulfill my dreams,
And provide that ultimate high.

Restless
My spirit is restless, I toss and turn.
How I wonder, will I ever learn.
Life it comes, then it goes.
I often wonder, what only God knows.
I need, I want, much more then I can see.
I think I know you, when I hardly know me.
I walk slowly as I trudge my way.
Trying to consider all, before I say.
We only get it, just for today.
My spirit is restless, so I toss and turn.
Watching time go by, I start to learn.
I need for nothing, want for less.
For in reality, I've got the best.
