"Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings"
I think this was a really good one for me. I thought I had soo many
"shortcomings',ie faults that there was no hope for me at all. But then it
turned out that once I got help from another alcoholic,(my Sponsor),it wasn't so
hard. Just asking for help became easier. Basically this was asking God to
remove my faults.Or atleast most of them. I am still working on this one, even
thought I now have over 2 years of Sobriety and we have been through all the
steps once. Now we are starting all over with the first three. My Sponsor says
it is time to look at them alittle differently now that I have more Sobriety. So
I am. I hope this has helped someone today. You all help me in some way
everyday. God Bless. Your friend in AA, Susie

The Disease

I have a disease called addiction.
Yes I am powerless but how do I accept this condition?
I go to meetings and try to listen
and sometimes throughout the day -
my mind glamorizes and the thought of using glistens.
I say the serenity prayer out of fear
and try to believe a few new friends really care.
Many times I feel hopeless and doomed.
I try to get out of it but just get consumed.
Up and down a roller coaster I go.
I wish it would stop but when I do not know.
This disease is so powerful and angry.
All it wants is control of me.
There has to be a way to deal
and am told in order to do that I must feel.
I'm feeling many things...Anger, tired, lonely and fearful
that sometimes I become quite tearful.
For many years I have used.
I can now see the progression and how I abused.
I have been numb for so long
God, how I want to feel I belong.
What a false sense of security this disease has given.
I want to feel that life is worth living.
Suicide and using are not an option.
Finding a new way to live will take much caution.
I should be grateful for the disease has been arrested
but every single day I feel I am being tested.
I'm not sure of my real personality
but am told in order to make it I need spirituality.
How do I get all that I need
when all the disease wants is to feed?
I know the answers are not in a bottle or in dope.
All I need is to learn how to cope
then maybe I'll have a little hope.

Just For Today
July 5 Exploring Spiritual
Options

"The nature of our belief will determine the manner of our prayers
And meditation," Basic Text, p.43

How do we pray? For each NA member, this is a deeply personal
matter. Many of us find that, over time, we develop a manner of
prayer and meditation based on what we learn from others and
what we are comfortable with.

Some of us arrive in NA with a closed mind toward a Power
greater than ourselves. But when we sit down with our sponsor
and discuss our difficulty, looking at the Second Step in depth,
we are pleased to find that we can choose any concept of a
Higher Power that appeals to us.

Just as our definition of a Power greater than ourselves differs from
addict to addict, so does our manner of achieving a "conscious
contact" Some attend religious services; some chant; some sit quietly
or talk with whatever is out there; some find a spiritual connection by
communing with nature. The "right way" to pray and meditate is
whatever way helps us improve our conscious contact with our own
Higher Power.

Asking others how they found their spiritual guidance is always a
good place to begin. Reading literature before we enter periods
of meditation can also help us. Many have gone before us on this
search. As we seek spiritual growth, we can greatly benefit from
their experience.

Just for today: I will explore my options for improving my conscious
contact with the God of my understanding. pg. 194

Fear and Faith

The achievement of freedom from fear is a lifetime undertaking, one
that can never be wholly completed. When under heavy attack, acute
illness, or in other conditions of serious insecurity, we shall all
react to
this emotion -- well or badly, as the case may be. Only the self-
deceived will claim perfect freedom from fear.
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 263

Fear has caused suffering when I could have had more faith. There
are times when fear suddenly tears me apart, just when I'm
experiencing feelings of joy, happiness and a lightness of heart.
Faith and a feeling of self-worth toward a Higher Power -- helps me
endure tragedy and ecstasy. When I choose to give all of my fears
over to my Higher Power, I will be free.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ July 5th

A.A. Thought for the Day

Until we came into A.A. most of us had tried desperately to
stop drinking. We were filled with the delusion that we could
drink like our friends. We tried time and again to take it or
leave it, but we could do neither. We always lapsed into
ceaseless, unhappy drinking. Families, friends, and employers
threw up their hands in hurt bewilderment, in despair, and
finally in disgust. We wanted to stop. We realized that
every reason for drinking was only a crazy excuse. Have I
given up every excuse for drinking?

Meditation for the Day

Many things can upset you and you can easily get off the
track. But remember that God is near you all the time,
ready to help you if you call on Him. You cannot forever
stand against God's will for you, nor can you, forever upset
God's plan for your life, even though Gods plan may be
postponed by your willfulness and deliberate choice of evil.
A whole world of men and women cannot permanently change
God's laws nor His purpose for the universe. The sea of life
may took very rough to us, but we can believe that our Captain
steers the boat on a straight course.

Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may try to steer a straight course. I pray that
I may accept God's direction in my life's journey.

Today's Thought
JULY 05

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Survivor Guilt

We begin recovering. We begin taking care of ourselves. Our
recovery program starts to work in our life, and we begin to feel
good about ourselves.

Then it hits. Guilt.

Whenever we begin to experience the fullness and joy of life,
we may feel guilty about those we've left behind - those not
recovering, those still in pain. This survivor guilt is a symptom
of codependency.

We may think about the husband we've divorced who is still
drinking. We may dwell on a child, grown or adult, still in pain.
We may get a phone call from a nonrecovering parent who
relates his or her misery to us. And we feel pulled into their
pain.

How can we feel so happy, so good, when those we love are
still in misery? Can we really break away and lead satisfying
lives, despite their circumstances? Yes, we can.

And yes, it hurts to leave behind those we love. But keep
moving forward anyway. Be patient. Other people's recovery is
not our job. We cannot make them recover. We cannot make
them happy.

We may ask why we were chosen for a fuller life. We may
never know the answer. Some may catch up in their own time,
but their recovery is not our business. The only recovery we
can truly claim is our own.

We can let go of others with love, and love ourselves without
guilt.

Today, I am willing to work through my sadness and guilt. I will
let myself be healthy and happy, even though someone I love
has not chosen the same path.

A Definition of Unconditional Love

I love you as you are, as you seek to find your own special way to
relate to
the world. I honour your choices to learn in the way you feel is right
for
you.

I know that it is important that you are the person you want to be and
not
someone that others or I think you 'should' be. I realize that I
cannot know
what is best for you, although perhaps sometimes I think I do. I have
not
been where you have been, viewing life from the angle you have. I do not
know what you have chosen to learn, how you have chosen to learn it,
with
whom or in what time period. I have not walked life looking through your
eyes, so how can I know what you need.

I allow you to be in the world without a thought or word of judgement
from
me, about the deeds you undertake. I see no error in the things you
say or
do. In this place where I am, I see that there are many ways to
perceive and
experience the different facets of our world. I allow without
reservation
the choices you make in each moment. I make no judgement of this, for
if I
would deny your right to your evolution, then I would deny that right
for
all others and myself.

To those who would choose a way I cannot walk, whilst I may not choose
to
add my power and my energy to this way, I will never deny you the gift
of
love that the Universe has bestowed within me, for all creation. As I
love
you, so I shall be loved. As I sow, so shall I reap.

I allow you the Universal Right of free will to walk your own path,
creating
steps or to sit awhile if that is what is right for you. I will make no
judgement that these steps are large or small, nor light or heavy or
that
they lead up or down, for this is just my viewpoint.

I may see you do nothing and judge it unworthy and yet it may be that
you
bring great healing, as you stand blessed by the light of the
universe. I
cannot always see the higher picture of Divine Order.

For it is the unalienable right of all life to choose their own
evolution
and with great love I acknowledge your right to determine your future.
In
humility I bow to the realization that the way I see, as best for me
does
not have to mean it is also right for you. I know that you are led as 'I
Am', following the inner excitement to know your own path.

I know that the many races, religions, customs, nationalities and
beliefs
within our world, bring us great richness and allow us the benefit and
teachings of such diverseness. I know we each learn in our own unique
way in
order to bring that love and wisdom back to the whole. I know that if
there
were only one way to do something, there would need only be one person.

I will not only love you if you behave in a way I think you should or
believe in those things I believe in. I understand you are truly my
brother
and my sister, though you may have been born in a different place and
believe in something different than I.

The love I feel is for the entire world. I know that every living
thing is a
part of this universe and I feel a love deep within for every person,
animal, tree and flower, every bird, river and ocean and for all the
creatures in the entire world.

I live my life in loving service; being the best me I can, becoming
wiser in
the perfection of divine truth, becoming happier in the joy of
UNCONDITIONAL
LOVE.

The Sower's Seeds

There is an old Chinese tale about a woman whose only son died.

In her grief, she went to the holy man and said, “What prayers, what
magical
incantations do you have to bring my son back to life?”

Instead of sending her away or reasoning with her, he said to her,
“Fetch me
a mustard seed from a home that has never known sorrow. We will use it
to
drive the sorrow out of your life.” The woman went off at once in
search of
that magical mustard seed.

She came first to a splendid mansion, knocked at the door, and said,
“I am
looking for a home that has never known sorrow. Is this a place? It is
very
important to me.”

They told her, “You’ve certainly come to the wrong place,” and began to
describe all the tragic things that recently had befallen them.

The woman said to herself, “Who is better able to help these poor,
unfortunate people that I, who have had misfortune of my own?”

She stayed to comfort them, and then went on in search of a home that
had
never known sorrow. But wherever she turned, in hovels and in other
places,
she found one tale after another of sadness and misfortune.

She became so involved in ministering to other people’s grief that
ultimately she forgot about her quest for the magical mustard seed,
never
realizing that it had, in fact, driven the sorrow out of her life.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*First Things First*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Just for today, I will live through this day
only, and not set far-reaching goals to try to
overcome all my problems at once.
I know I can do something for 24 hours that
would overwhelm me if I thought I had to
keep it up for a lifetime.

Just for today, I will be happy.
Abraham Lincoln said, "Most folks are
about as happy as they make up their
minds to be". He was right. I will not dwell
on thoughts that depress me. I will chase
them out of my mind and replace
them with happy thoughts.

Just for today, I will adjust myself to what is.
I will face reality. I will correct those things
that I can correct and accept those I cannot.

Just for today, I will improve my mind. I will
not be a mental loafer. I will force myself
to read something that requires effort,
thought, and concentration.

Just for today, I will do something positive
to improve my health. If I'm a smoker, I'll
make an honest effort to quit. If I'm overweight,
I'll eat nothing I know to be fattening and only
walking around the block or using the stairs
instead of the elevator. I'll force myself to exercise.

Just for today, I will make a conscious effort to
be agreeable. I will look as good as I can,
dress becomingly, speak softly, act courteously,
and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

Just for today, I'll try not to improve anybody
except myself. We know so much more about
nutrition and how much exercise and sensible
living can extend life and make it more
enjoyable; so just for today, I'll take good
care of my body so I can celebrate
many more happy new years.

Just for today, I will have a program. I may
not follow it exactly, but I will have it,
thereby saving myself from two pests:
hurry and indecision.

Just for today, I will gather the courage
to do what is right and take the
responsibility for my own actions.

My prayer for you

My prayer for you is to have,
Comfort on difficult days,
Rainbows to follow the clouds,
Laughter to kiss your lips,
Sunsets to warm your heart
Gentle hugs when spirits sag,
Friendships to brighten your being,
Beauty for your eyes to see,
Confidence for when you doubt,
Faith so that you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.
I asked that He would bless you
To guide you and protect you
As you go along your way....
His love is always with you
His promises are true
No matter what the tribulation
You know He will see us through
So when the road you're traveling on
Seems difficult at best
Give your ALL of your problems to God
And He will do the rest.

Ups and Downs

It is when I am down in the valley
Looking up to the mountain
That simple things in life
Seem overwhelming
That's when I pray
For each valley
Has a lesson for me
To learn and grow through
With each down there is an up
If I stick to the fight when I'm hit
I may get the victors cup
God helps me to try today
Valleys help me grow
They never last forever
I will soon know
I will be on top again
I never stay down for long
Recovery has taught me a new song
If I remain open and willing I'll see
My God is near watching me
I have people to share
My feelings with
I am not alone anymore
I hardly question what for
Life is always full of lessons
Each day has its own share
My job is to endure and show others
I love them and this man
Is one who will care
We are all blessed
To live in recovery today
The biggest blessing
Is to give it away

------------------------------------

As you are aware of, this is a fairly busy list, with lots of emails each day.
I know a lot of people can be overwhelmed by the amount of emails they receive
on lists and it can make you want to unsubscribe.

To help make your life easier (and less stressful) there are options for your
group mail.

1.You can pick to read on the 'web only'...you get NO emails to your email
program, you simply login to yahoo at http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups and click
on the group that you want to read, then you would click on "messages" in the
sidebar on the left.

2.You can subscribe as 'daily digest'. With this option, you get one or two
emails daily, which include all the emails to the group, you just get to read
them in bunches instead of individually. Also there are no graphics or pictures.

To choose either of these options, you go to your groups page at
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups , then click "edit my groups" on the on title
bar, then under "message delivery" there will be a drop down list, click on the
checkmark and it will show your options.. you can choose:

individual emails

daily digest

special notices- web only but you will get special notices to your inbox.

no email - read on the site only.

Its as simple as that.

Make sure you click on 'save changes' at the bottom of the page and you can
exit.

If you ever need any help, Im an email away. I can also help you set up your
mail delivery settings.

In loving service,
Scott
