Not Me !!!
"Not me," said the star
as she did her first line.
"No drug can enslave a strong will like mine."
"Not me," claimed the lawyer
(he just took his blue pill),
"I want to relax as I draw up this will."
I won't need it tomorrow,
it's just for today,
I can take it or leave it,
so right now, let's play.
"At least it's not drugs,"
bragged the tall high school jock.
"Just booze ain't so bad,
come on let's get crocked."
"Hey, roll us a joint,"
cried the cheerleader queen.
"I hate all my teachers,
my parents are mean."
I won't need it tomorrow,
it's just for today,
I can take it or leave it,
so right now, let's play.
"I don't do hard liquor, I only drink beer,"
The hard-hat was certain
he'd nothing to fear.
The housewife, "A vodka,
to get through the night,
The kids and the housework
have me quite up-tight."
I won't need it tomorrow,
it's just for today,
I can take it or leave it,
so right now, let's play.
"Not me," they all cried
as they thought in contempt
Of the 'typical addict,' alone and unkempt.
"Not me," of the derelict down in the gutter,
When "I once was like you,"
they heard his soft mutter.
But time has run out
for both lawyer and star,
They know they've hit bottom,
they've fallen so far.
With athlete and housewife,
with hard-hat and queen,
They're facing the horrors
of where they have been.
They've lied and they've cheated,
they've stolen and fought,
Seen their families' eyes when
at last they've been caught.
They've sworn to do better,
then started again,
Torn by a craving that's killed stronger men.
They've sweated and writhed
in the grip of addiction,
A torture they'd thought
to meet only in fiction.
Some have been beaten,
they can't face the pain,
They dig their graves swiftly -
they're using again.
Some hope for the future,
they work and they pray
For a time when a rainbow replaces the gray;
When the thought of their cravings
does not make them cower,
They know they can do it -
with their Higher Power.
But their worst pain of all
is that others still laugh,
"Not me, it won't hook me,
for I'm strong enough."
They know it CAN get you, "Not me" is a lie,
And they beg that you'll hear them -
and choose not to die.

Just For Today
January 11 Faith
"As we develop faith in our daily lives, we find that our Higher Power
supplies us with the strength and guidance that we need."
Basic Text, p. 91
Some of us come into recovery very frightened and insecure. We feel
weak and alone. We are uncertain of our direction and don't know
where to go for answers. We are told that if we find some faith in a
Power greater than ourselves, we will find security and guidance. We
want that feeling of safety and strength. But faith doesn't come
overnight. It takes time and effort to grow.
The seed is planted when we ask our Higher Power for help and then
acknowledge the source of our help when it comes. We nurture the
tiny seed of faith with the sunlight of our prayers each day. Our faith
grows, a reward for living life on its own terms. One day we realize our
faith has become like a huge spreading tree; it doesn't stop the storms
of life, but we know that we are safe in its shelter.
Just for today: I know that faith in my Higher Power will not calm the
storms of life, but it will calm my heart. I will let my faith shelter
me
in times of trouble.

At The Turning Point
Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We
asked His protection and care with complete abandon.
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p. 59
Every day I stand at turning points. My thoughts and actions can propel
me toward growth or turn me down the road to old habits and to
booze. Sometimes turning points are beginnings, as when I decide to
start praising, instead of condemning someone. Or when I begin to ask
for help instead of going it alone. At other times turning points are
endings, such as when I see clearly the need to stop festering
resentments or crippling self-seeking. Many shortcomings tempt me
daily; therefore, I also have daily opportunities to become aware of
them. In one form or another, many of my character defects appear
daily: self-condemnation, anger, running away, being prideful,
wanting to get even, or acting out of grandiosity. Attempting half
measures to eliminate these defects merely paralyzes my efforts to
change. It is only when I ask God for help, with complete
abandon, that I become willing -- and able -- to change.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / January 11th
A.A. Thought for the Day
When we were drinking, most of us never thought
of helping others. We liked to buy drinks for
people, because that made us feel like big shots.
But we only used others for our own pleasure.
To really go out and try to help somebody who
needed help never occurred to us. To us, helping
others looked like a sucker's game. But when we
came into A.A., we began to try to help others.
And we found out that helping others made us happy
and also helped us to stay sober. Have I learned
that there is happiness in helping others?
Meditation for the Day
I will pray only for strength and that God's will be
done. I will use God's unlimited store of strength
for my needs. I will seek God's will for me. I will
strive for consciousness of God's presence, for He
is the light of the world. I have become a pilgrim,
who needs only marching orders and strength and
guidance for this day.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may seek God's guidance day by day.
I pray that I may strive to abide in God's presence.

Today's Thought
JANUARY 11
You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©
Letting Go of Guilt
"There's a good trick that people in dysfunctional relationships
use," said one recovering woman. "The other person does
something inappropriate or wrong, then stands there until you
feel guilty and end up apologizing."
It's imperative that we stop feeling so guilty.
Much of the time, the things we feel guilty about are not our
issues. Another person behaves inappropriately or in some
way violates our boundaries. We challenge the behavior,
and the person gets angry and defensive. Then we feel guilty.
Guilt can prevent us from setting the boundaries that would be
in our best interests, and in other people's best interests. Guilt
can stop us from taking healthy care of ourselves.
We don't have to let others count on the fact that we'll always
feel guilty. We don't have to allow ourselves to be controlled
by guilt - earned or unearned! We can break through the barrier
of guilt that holds us back from self care. Push. Push harder.
We are not at fault, crazy, or wrong. We have a right to set
boundaries and to insist on appropriate treatment. We can
separate another's issues from our issues, and let the person
experience the consequences of his or her own behavior,
including guilt. We can trust ourselves to know when our
boundaries are being violated.
Today, I will let go of my big and little guilty feelings. Light and
love are on my side.

Dolphins Await
Alan Cohen
"One night at a Hawaiian retreat, I had a vivid dream of
swimming with dolphins. The next morning, I attended a
business meeting that I found boring and purposeless.
Although I sat and tried to be present, all I could think
about was going to the beach. When I recognized I
was useless at the meeting, I politely excused myself and
made a beeline for the beach. Soon after I arrived, a huge
pod of dolphins surfaced in the bay, and I swam out to play
with them. For a long time, I was surrounded by their
delightful presence, and I was thrilled to frolic with them.
I was able to look into their eyes, which was like peering
into a warm eternity. Was I every glad I left the meeting!
If your spirit is not present where you are, and you feel
intuitively called elsewhere, you must hearken to your
inner voice. I am not encouraging you to be irresponsible
and run away from things you need to do. I am encouraging
you to be responsive to your spirit. It is not responsible to
engage in activities that affront your soul. Honor your soul
by being where you belong.

Crossing the Tightrope
"There was a tightrope walker who did incredible aerial feats.
All over Paris, he would do tightrope acts at tremendously scary
heights. Then he had succeeding acts where he would do it
blindfolded. Then he would go across the tightrope blindfolded,
pushing a wheelbarrow.
An American promoter read about this in the papers, and wrote
a letter to the tightrope walker saying, 'Tightrope, I don't believe
you can do it, but I'm willing to make you an offer. For a very
substantial sum of money, besides all your transportation fees,
I would like to challenge you to do your act over Niagara Falls.'
Now, Tightrope wrote back, 'Sir, although I've never been to
America, nor seen the Falls, I'd love to come.'
After a lot of promotion and setting the whole thing up, many
people came to see the event. Tightrope was to start on the
Canadian side and walk over to the American side. Drums roll,
and he comes across the rope which is suspended over the
treacherous part of the falls ~ blindfolded!! And he makes it
across easily.
The crowds go wild, and he comes to the promoter and says,
'Well, Mr. Promoter, now do you believe I can do it?'
'Well of course I do. I mean, I just saw you do it.'
'No,' said Tightrope, 'do you really believe I can do it?'
'Well of course I do, you just did it.'
'No, no, no,' said Tightrope, 'do you believe I can do it?'
'Yes,' said Mr. Promoter, 'I believe you can do it.'
'Good,' said Tightrope, 'then you get in the wheel barrow.'
The word believe, comes from the Greek, meaning 'to live by'.
This is the kind of story that gets you to thinking ~ How often do
we say that we believe God is guiding us and taking care of us,
yet refuse to get in the wheelbarrow?

No Matter What
Thank you my friend for showing me,
A place and a person that I don’t want to be.
As I watch your denial, your pain, your despair,
Please know in your heart, I will always be there.
I hope you survive this addiction of yours,
Believe you me, I’ve had my own tours.
The paranoia, the guilt, the shame and the cons,
To this disease, we are nothing but pawns.
Pawns in a ruthless and loveless game,
If we’d only surrender, things wouldn’t be the same.
But there are those who care for one another,
Like the deepness of love, for a sister or brother.
I mean what I say, my very dear friend,
No matter what, I’ll be there till the end.

Lower or Higher
Anger and despair vent and spent
Ah, how these permeate our paradise lost
Always, germinating by the second
All trivial matters infesting into dark hatred
If only man could open their hearts and see
Then Heaven’s gates will reveal the big blue sea
True fluid water of consciousness and love
In inner skies above, flies with us the spirit of the holy dove
Always lower power
crawl and hide in putrid dark recesses
And always, Higher power
flies high in the inner blue skies
crawl or fly ....

Chains
Oh, how these chains do bind me
far more than those ever imposed by others
for I have forged these links I bear
with my own heart, passion, and soul
And, does it really matter
that I had the best of intentions
during every event when I decided
to add more rather than less to my burden
I've worn them so long
that I almost considered them to be natural
and is it not amazing and troubling
what one imposes upon oneself
So, how does one begin
to unravel these numbing constraints
and move truly forward into the light
with a gentler set of self imposed bonds
Could it be as simple as looking
at each segment of one's own creation
and then deciding which ones are worthy
of being a part of who we wish to become
Because after all , if one cannot allow
one's own ideals of oneself to come true
is one deserving of assistance from above
in becoming the best that one can be
So, I have decided to begin the journey
of self discovery and the trusting of my inner voices
which I have denied for far too long
in my quest for immediate gratification
And, I realize there will be some bumps in the night
and some unpleasant realizations
about who I've allowed myself to become
in the here and now
But, if I'm ever to reach my goals
do I not have to begin
with who am I
and where am I going

From "Good Housekeeping" article, 1954:
"When you stand outside a room where a
group of Alcoholics Anonymous is meeting,
the most frequent sound you hear is laughter.
Mellow laughter, which can come only from
people who have looked destruction and catastrophe in the face,
not once but continuously over long years,
and now are free and unafraid.
The laughter, in short, of people who hold God's hand and feel safe."
