Re: [TwelveStepSoulFood4 theSpirit] 1/9/09 "The AIDS Epidemic" ~12 Step Soul Food for the Spirit

PRECIOUS SCOTT, Thanks for continuing to remember Mark. We have an epidemic here
in LA county with children of addicts with HIV being born not just addicted to
drugs but with HIV. I am sorry I did not know Mark but he sounds like a
wonderful man that had his life finished too soon. At the same time perhaps he
lived more vibrantly than many of us who take life for granted. Please tell us
more about Mark

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*LAUGHTER Is HEALING*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The weekly meeting topic is:
Each month we will share on a step and
spiritual principles of the step.
Since it is January, PLEASE share on the first step
Or if you haven’t done the 1st step share on
powerlessness, honesty, acceptance or surrender...

(((Family))) a BIG hug to you ALL
I am a believer in the 12 steps
and I am grateful that I had a sponsor who encouraged me
to go through the 12 steps in my first year
The steps remain the same
but my perspective changes and my experience
broadens and deepens one day at a time.
The first step is about HONESTY
I lie so quick
I can lie to you well
I lie to myself perfectly
I was the last one to know that I had a problem
My family knew
My friends knew
My co-workers and employer knew
My neighbors knew
But I didn't know
I had to honestly admit that I could not use safely or successfully
without paying severe consequences.
When I use ALL bets are off
One day at a time, I have learned to ACCEPT
that I have the disease of addiction.
It took a lot of pain, misery and suffering to get to a place of
acceptance.
Acceptance is a process not an event.
I had to learn the and continue to learn the meaning of being POWERLESS
Today I know that one is too many and a thousand is never enough
I know that if you don't pick it up, you cant get high.
I know that If you don't pick it up, you don't have to put it down.
I know that If you stay away from the first one,
you don't have to worry about all of the rest.
I know that if you think staying away from the first one is tough,
try staying away from the second one, that's impossible!!!
I am powerless, but not helpless.
Today I know that I am powerless over everything EXCEPT
my attitudes and my behaviors.
I had to learn about the spiritual principle of SURRENDER,
Surrender didn't mean that I had to quit,
It just meant I didn't have to fight anymore.
Like people surrender in war,
I had to waive the white flag and join the winning side.
I had to learn to surrender,
not to the disease,
BUT to the program of N.A.
I did this by becoming willing to try it a way
that was working for many others.
If I wanted what you have,
I had to become willing to do what you did.
I became willing to surrender to the Good Orderly Direction of the
program.
By keeping my recovery first,
EVERYTHING else fell into place,
In the NA Basic text it says
It is not where we were that counts, but where we are going.
I don't know where I am going,
but I do know that If I keep doing what I am doing,
That God will take me there.
Thanks for letting me share
Stay in the Light,
In loving service,

The AIDS Epidemic

The 1990's saw the growth of a killer epidemic,
We need an answer, a cure, something quick !
We have mothers, fathers, friends and lovers crying theirs hearts out.
There is a protest through out the land, Act Up people shout.
Our friends are dropping like flies,
All we hear is when another one dies.
Brave noble people terminal with nothing but kindness and love for
others.
They don't want pity or rejection,
just encouragements from sisters and brothers.
These people with AIDS accept their fate,
They know only love can conquer hate.
Some gay, Some straight, Men, Women, White, Black, Asian and Hispanic
The last thing they do is panic.
A time in our lives to come together for sure.
Please dear God and Country, help us find a cure.

Mark Kostew ©

Mark K. was my best friend. He passed on October 30, 1994.
He was a courageous, peaceful warrior and my hero.
It wasn't that he died clean,
He LIVED clean.

Just For Today
January 9 Returning Our Sponsor's Kindness

"Our earliest involvements with others often begin with our sponsor"
Basic Text p. 55

Our sponsor can be an abundant source of recovery information,
wisdom, and loving words. They've done so much for us. From the
late night telephone calls to the hours spent listening to our recovery
writing, they've believed in us and invested their time to prove it.
They've lovingly and firmly shown us how to be honest. Their
boundless compassion in times of turmoil has given us the strength
to go on. Their way of helping has prompted us to seek our answers
within ourselves, and we've become mature, responsible, confident
individuals as a result.

Though our sponsor has given so generously and has never
demanded repayment, there are things we can do to show our
appreciation. We treat our sponsor with respect. They are not a trash
can designed for us to dump our garbage in. They have their times of
trial, just as we do, and sometimes need our support. They are human,
have feelings, and appreciate our concern. Maybe they would like to
receive a card in the mail or a phone call expressing our love.

Whatever we do to return our sponsor's kindness will enhance our
personal recovery, not to mention the joy we'll bring to our sponsor.

Just for today: My sponsor has cared for me when I couldn't care for
myself. Today, I will do something nice for my sponsor.

Accepting Success or Failure

Furthermore, how shall we come to terms with seeming failure or
success? Can we now accept and adjust to either without despair
or pride? Can we accept poverty, sickness, loneliness, and
bereavement with courage and serenity? Can we steadfastly
content ourselves with the humbler, yet sometimes more durable,
satisfactions when the brighter, more glittering achievements are
denied us?
TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 112

After I found A.A. and stopped drinking, it took a while before I
understood why the First Step contained two parts: my
powerlessness over alcohol, and my life's unmanageability. In
the same way, I believed for a long time that, in order to be in tune
with the Twelve Steps, it was enough for me "to carry this message
to alcoholics." That was rushing things. I was forgetting that there
were a total of Twelve Steps and that the Twelfth Step also had
more than one part. Eventually I learned that it was necessary for
me to "practice these principles" in all areas of my life. In
working
all the Steps thoroughly, I not only stay sober and help someone
else to achieve sobriety, but also I transform my difficulty with
living into a joy of living.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden / January 9th

A.A. Thought for the Day

When we were drinking, most of us had no real
faith in anything. We may have said that we
believed in God, but we didn't act as though we
did. We never honestly asked God to help us
and we never really accepted His help. To us,
faith looked like helplessness. But when we came
into A.A., we began to have faith in God. And we
found out that faith gave us the strength we
needed to overcome drinking. Have I learned
that there is strength in faith?

Meditation for the Day

I will have faith, no matter what may befall me.
I will be patient, even in the midst of troubles.
I will not fear the strain of life, because I believe
that God knows just what I can bear. I will look to
the future with confidence. I know that God will
not ask me to bear anything that could overcome
or destroy me.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may put this day in the hands of God.
I pray for faith, so that nothing will upset me or
weaken my determination to stay sober.

Today's Thought
JANUARY 09

You are reading from the book The Language of Letting Go.
Melody Beattie ©

Responsibility for Ourselves

We have been doing the wrong things for the right reasons.
--Codependent No More

Caretaking: the act of taking responsibility for other people while
neglecting responsibility for ourselves. When we instinctively feel
responsible for the feelings, thoughts, choices, problems, comfort,
and destiny of others, we are caretakers. We may believe, at an
unconscious level, that others are responsible for our happiness,
just as we're responsible for theirs.

It's a worthy goal to be a considerate, loving, nurturing person.
But caretaking is neglecting us to the point of feeling victimized.
Caretaking involves caring for others in ways that hamper them in
learning to take responsibility for themselves.

Caretaking doesn't work. It hurts other people; it hurts us. People
get angry. They feel hurt, used, and victimized. So do we.

The kindest and most generous behavior we can choose is taking
responsibility for ourselves - for what we think, feel, want, and need.
The most beneficial act we can perform is to be true to ourselves,
and let others take responsibility for themselves.

Today, I mil pay attention to my actual responsibilities to myself. I
will let others do the same. If I am in doubt about what my actual
responsibilities are, I will take an inventory.

Eleven Laws to Set You Free
by Guy Finley

If we want to grow inwardly we must find new ways to learn about
ourselves. These higher discoveries call for higher learning.
Think of each of the following eleven laws as individual magic
strands of a flying carpet. Make it your aim to weave them
together in your mind. Then watch how these lessons combine
to effortlessly lift you to a higher and happier life level.

The First Law:
Nothing can stop you from starting over.
The greatest power you possess for succeeding in life is your
understanding that life gives you a fresh start any moment you
choose to start fresh. Nothing that stood in your way even a
heartbeat before stands there now in the same way. It's all new,
even if you can't as yet see it that way.

You've only to test the truth of this fact about the newness of life to
discover the incredible freedom that waits for you just behind it.
And then nothing can stop you. You'll know the real secret and
the perfect power of starting over.

The Second Law:
Don't be afraid to see when something doesn't work.
Learn to be sensitive and to listen to the inner signals that try and
tell you when something isn't working. You know what they are.
Frustration and resentment to name just a few. The presence of
these emotional troubles aren't trying to tell you that you can't
succeed, only that the road you've insisted upon taking so far
doesn't lead where you want. Learning to admit when something
isn't working is the same as teaching yourself what will.

The Third Law:
If it doesn't flow, there's more to know.
Learn to recognize all forms of strain -- whether at work, in your
creative efforts, or in your relationships -- as being unnecessary.
The friction you feel mounting when busy at some labor is never
caused by the task at hand, but by what you don't yet know about
it. This means the only real reason for your strain is that you've
got hold of a wrong idea you don't yet see as wrong. This new
insight allows you to release yourself by showing you what
you need to know. Flowing follows your new knowing.

The Fourth Law:
Don't Take the Easy Way
There's no getting away from what you don't know, which is why
any time you feel compelled to go around a problem by taking
the easy way, that problem always comes round again. And isn't
that what makes life seem so hard? Learn to see the "easy way"
as a lying thought that keeps you tied up and doing hard time.
Getting something over is not the same as having it completed.
And as this insight grows, so will your understanding that the
whole idea of the "hard way" has always been just a lying thought
as well. Now you know: the complete way is the easy way. So
volunteer to make the "hard way" your way and learn the real
easy way.

The Fifth Law
On the other side of the resistance is the flow.
There are often times when it feels as though you can't go any
farther in your work or studies. But you can learn to go beyond
any blockage. Make the following clear to yourself. Those
moments -- when it feels as though you're least able to get beyond
yourself -- are not telling you that you've gone as far as you can
go, but only reveal that you've reached as far as you know --
for now. This higher self-knowledge about your true inner position
allows you to see the resistance you're feeling for what it really
is: a threshold, and not a closed door. Walk through it. Nothing
can stop you.

On the other side of the resistance is the flow. Learning to go
beyond you is the same as entering into the new.

The Sixth Law:
Watch for the opportunity to learn something new.
Everything is changing all the time. That means life is an endless
occasion for learning something new. But this means more than
meets the eye. Just as you're a part of everything, everything is a
part of you. The whole of life is connected. And your ability to learn
is part of the wonder of this complete, but ever-changing whole.
Learning serves as a window, not only into the complex world
you see around you, but through it you may also look into the
you that's busy looking into the world. And when you've learned
there's no end to what you can see about the amazing worlds
spinning both around and within you, you'll also know there's no
end to you. So stay awake. Learn something new every day.
You'll love how that makes you feel about yourself.

The Seventh Law:
Learn to see conclusions as limitations
If you approach the possibilities of learning about your life as being
limitless, which they are, then it follows that any conclusion you
reach about yourself has to be an unseen limitation. Why? Because
there's always more to see. For instance, let yourself see that all
conclusions are illusions when it comes to the security they promise.
There may be security in a prison, but there are also no choices
behind its confining walls. Learn to see all conclusions about
yourself as invisible cells. For that's what they are. The seeming
security these conclusions offer are a poor substitute for the real
security of knowing that who you really are is always free to
be something higher.

The Eighth Law:
Have no fear about being afraid
Fear can't learn, which is why you must learn about fear if you
ever wish to be a fearless learner. So, the first thing you must learn
is how to get past your fear of being afraid. Here's how. The next
time a fear of some kind tries to fill one of your moments, try to see
the difference between the fact of your situation and your feelings
about it. This it the right use of your mind. For instance, it's a fact
that interest rates change. It's not a fact you have to get scared
when they do. That fear is not a fact of life, but only becomes one
for you as long as you insist that life perform according to what
you think are your best interests. As you learn to see that these
fearful feelings don't belong to you, but only to your wrong
thinking, you cease to be afraid, even of your own fears.

The Ninth Law:
Never accept defeat.
As long as it's possible to learn, you need never feel tied down
by any past defeat in your life. Here's the real fact: nothing can
prevent the inwardly self-educating man or woman from
succeeding in life. And here's why: wisdom always triumphs
over adversity. But to win real wisdom calls you to join in a
special kind of struggle. And if this battle had a banner under
which to rally, here's what would be written upon that higher call
to arms: "But I can find out!" Yes, you can learn the facts. You
may not understand how you could have been blind to that evil
person's real intentions, but you can find out. Take these four
words that are freedom's battle cry: I can find out! Use them to
defeat what's defeating you.

The Tenth Law:
Learn to let go of painful pretense.
Most people approach their troubles with one of these two non-
solutions: they either pretend their problem isn't a problem, or
they pretend they've solved their troubles with temporary cover-
ups. But their pain remains. It doesn't have to be this way for you.
You can learn to let go of painful pretense. Here's how. When
facing an old problem, what you don't want is another "new
way" to deal with it. What you really want is to learn something
new about the true nature of what has a hold on you. To go far,
start near. When faced with any pain, let go of what you think
you know. Act towards your trouble as if you don't know anything
about it. This new solution is the only true one because the truth
is you don't know what the real problem is. Otherwise you
wouldn't still have it. Letting go what you think you know puts
you in the right place for learning what you need to know.

The Eleventh Law:
Persistence always prevails.
If you'll persist with your sincere wish for higher learning, you
can't help but succeed. Persistence always prevails because
part of its power is to hold you in place until either the world lines
up with your wish, or you see that your wish is out of line. But, for
whichever way it turns in that moment, you've won something
that only persistence can pay. See the following: if you get what
you think you have to have to be happy and you're still not
satisfied, then you've learned what you don't want. Now you can
go on to higher things. And should you learn you've been
wearing yourself out with useless wishes, then this discovery
allows you to turn your energies in a new direction: self liberation.

It Is

It is in silence where all sound is heard.
It is in stillness where all movement is felt.
It is by not looking that everything is seen.
It is in aloneness when we are accompanied by all that is.
It is in simplicity that all the complexities become clear.
It is from no-thing that all things come.
It is by not walking any path that our destination is reached.
It is in Being that we are eternally re-born.
It is in looking at ourselves that the face of God is revealed.
It is through separation that we become whole.
It is in shadow that we become enlightened.

Want To Go Get One?

It all started out so innocently,
"want to go get one?",
Then one turned to two,
three, four, and many more.
Before I knew it
I didn't know how or why,
or just what I did last night.
My friend called me, and said
"Do you remember
what you did last night?",
and I drew blank.
He said
"I never saw someone drink like you,
most people quit,
when you were just getting in tune!"
Then he said "Did you see your car?"
"It looked like you didn't see the post
at the end of the fence, and scratched
the whole right side of your car."
I tell my friend "My head is aching"
and he said "go get another one"
My cycle begins all over again,
my head spins
and I don't know how or why.
I gathered a lot of defective labels,
from friends, family, and strangers.
I lost all I had ever
treasured, wanted, knew.
I lost me,
and everything
that makes up me.
My life finally crashed,
and I ran out of excuses,
there was no place to turn,
so I went to the rooms
and picked up all the pieces.
They say it's surrender,
but I say
I'm no longer a slave.
It all seems so real now,
"A worker among workers,
A friend among friends
One in a family."

When will they come and get me

Just for today
I'll stay dry
The days add up
To weeks
The weeks add up
To months
You say I'm better
But I don't see
Yet sure enough
Today I'm free

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*Keep The Focus On You*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The waves of life wash over us
Tumbling, cleansing, smoothing the rough edges
Until we are a magnificent, shining stone
Of beauty and perfection.
We are buffeted, tossed, rolled around
Until we break free to rise buoyantly
To the surface, riding the crest of the waves.

A thrilling, exhilarating ride, at last,
Ever free from the rip tides of life,
Free to soar among the stars and taste the
Delights of eternity.

I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see.
I sought my God, but my God eluded me.
I sought my brother and I found all three.

"I am healthy, prosperous, happy and in love with life

It is so and I give thanks"

------------------------------------

As you are aware of, this is a fairly busy list, with lots of emails each day.
I know a lot of people can be overwhelmed by the amount of emails they receive
on lists and it can make you want to unsubscribe.

To help make your life easier (and less stressful) there are options for your
group mail.

1.You can pick to read on the 'web only'...you get NO emails to your
email program, you simply login to yahoo at http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups and
click on the group that you want to read, then you would click on
"messages" in the sidebar on the left.

2.You can subscribe as 'daily digest'. With this option, you get one
or two emails daily, which include all the emails to the group, you just get to
read them in bunches instead of individually. Also there are no graphics or
pictures.

To choose either of these options, you go to your groups page at
http://groups.yahoo.com/mygroups , then click "edit my groups" on the
on title bar, then under "message delivery" there will be a drop down
list, click on the checkmark and it will show your options.. you can choose:

individual emails

daily digest

special notices- web only but you will get special notices to your inbox.

no email - read on the site only.

Its as simple as that.

Make sure you click on 'save changes' at the bottom of the page and you
can exit.

If you ever need any help, Im an email away. I can also help you set up your
mail delivery settings.

In loving service,
Scott
