Hi
I know just where you are coming from. I was an LPN
when I got hurt, but I was working towards my career
before I was injured. I've been nickel and diming
this degree for the last 15 years. When I had some
extra money, I would take a course at a local college.
The big thing that helped me is most colleges now
offer online courses or indepedent study. The
community colleges are where to look for something
like that. I am what is called an atypical student. I
am 49 yrs old and 98% of my class mates are just out
of high school. I would say 85% of my classes I had
to request extensions because I just wasnt able to
finish the course work with in a semester. I didnt
have any difficulties getting the extensions granted
and 98% of the profs bend over backwards to help you,
they know you are there because you want to be there
and not because your parents are footing the bill.
The thing you may have trouble with is the dexterity
deficits in your hands. I was already licensed as an
RN before I lost my dexterity. I am in college now
and the profs in the program all know my problem. I
am mainly here to get the scientific knowledge and
theory work under my belt. My goal is to get into a
management position or a teaching position in an LPN
school. I have the knowledge and experience, but my
fingers dont do the walking anymore, so I need to
depend on my mouth do the walking. I have been on
disability retirement from my job for the last 15
years. I am getting funding from the state to finance
my education. They are picking up the whole bill and
I am extremely greatful for that. Try to get some
evals done to see where you would excell and get
started. No matter what career or degree you choose
the gen ed courses are usually the same, that is where
to start. Get the maths, english and history courses
out of the way first. Thats what I did. Just get
started and good luck. It may seem like forever, but
its taking me 15 yrs. If I can do it anybody can.
