While psychiatry and its coercive practices and Jeffrey Dahmer and his coercive
practices are both evil, I wouldn't exactly equate them. The neuroleptic drugs
used by pschiatrists are given with the imprimatur of the state and its laws -
Jeffrey Dahmer kidnapped, assaulted and injected muriatic acid (hydrochloric
acid) into his victim's brains (with no one's approval) believing they could be
turned into sex slaves. Psychiatrists forcibly injected neuroleptics like
Chlorpromazine (an antihistamine) into their patients (victims) with the
approval of the state and maybe even their families who wanted to dispose of
them. But I can see where you're coming from - this may be a distinction
without a difference. Which is the bigger crime?

and sadism
Saw a bio piece on Jeffrey Dahmer recently that talked about his use of a crude
form of lobotomy on his victims in an attempt to create zombies who would serve
him as sexual slaves. This seems in line with Szasz's contention that psychiatry
is a form of slavery, and that psychiatric practices (lobotomy and drugging) are
used to control, rather than treat, patients. Dr Szasz argues, in 'The
Manufacture of Madness', that the psychiatrist has taken on the role of priest
in the modern therapeutic state. In this role he is empowered to create zombies
out of misfits as a means of social engineering.Louis Martinie, an authority on
Voodoo, explains in a different cultural context:'There are at least two
distinct forms of the Zombi in Voodoo just as there are two forms of sacrifice
within esoteric tradition. Sacrifice may be enforced or voluntary [Szasz
discusses the difference between coerced and voluntary therapy], its motivation
external or internal. The sacrifice of the [first] type of Zombi...is enforced,
decreed by an external agent [much like the therapeutic state decrees
psychiatric interventions].'This is an act of transgression par excellence. The
victim helplessly witnesses his or her own death and continues to live that
death. The Zombi may be created by the voodooist [or psychiatrist] as an act of
vengeance, for service [this was the case in Dahmer's experiments], or to serve
as an example to those who would deeply transgress and strain the bonds of
community [see 'Cruel Compassion' for description of how psychiatry serves this
purpose].'To create is to bring something forth from nothing. With the Zombi,
nothing is brought forth from something. Critical in the making of the Zombi is
the capture of the victim's Ti Bon Ange (small good angel) [or the severing of
the victim's frontal lobes in the case of psychiatry]. The Ti Bon Ange enables
personality to take hold and manifest. When the Ti Bon Ange is captured, the
roots of the will are thrust into a slavery that burns like acid.'*--from 'The
New Orleans Voodoo Tarot' [material in brackets is mine].*I understand that
Dahmer attempted to create zombies by drilling holes into the front of the
victim's skull and pouring acid onto the brain. This doesn't seem much more
crude than the psychiatrist's use of the ice-pick through the eye sockets in his
"psycho-surgery"!
