A tv programme for all of us who are benefitting from Tim Berners-Lee's
creation and how it has developed, including the Wikipedia online
encyclopaedia which has its share of misinformation about mh issues and
people, some of it contributed by people on these discussion boards! I'll
be more explicit in another message.
In the UK, the BBC and other "responsible" non-tabloid outlets have been
helping the government in its relentless refusal to be dissuaded from
introducing compulsory treatment (ie medication) outside of institutions.
We only have ourselves to blame (or congratulate depending how you view the
coverage) because we have two main lobbies for or against what is termed the
"medical model" in favour of what is termed "talking treatments". Both
sides claim that they are not against medication/therapies and of course a
combination of the two is generally agreed as the best option. But when it
comes down to it, the legislation is clearly simply based on making people
take medication. This is despite every very costly and lengthy inquiry
showing that the lack of resources and failure to provide appropriate care
is what leads to the homicides and of course suicides/self harm.
We have the power, if we want it, to disseminate correct information through
any number of outlets in the media on and offline.
Here are the details of the programme:
IMAGINE
Tue 5 December, 10:35 pm - 11:25 pm 50mins
From the BBC website :
www.herecomeseverybody.co.uk
ALAN YENTOB journeys into the world wide web to find out how it began,
who's hanging out there, and where it's taking us. Along the way he meets
TIM BERNERS-LEE, the inventor of the web - and goes on to explore how this
man's creativity has fuelled the creativity of millions of others.
Dandy blogger Dickon Edwards and sex blogger Abby Lee; the hardcore members
of the Arctic Monkeys message board; masked animator David Firth - whose
cartoons have been watched by millions on the web - and Ewan Macdonald, the
young Scot who wrote the millionth entry in the web phenomenon known as the
Wikipedia - all feature in the film, alongside figures such as veteran
director Ken Russell - currently making a film to upload to YouTube - and
web pioneer Daniel Myrick, director of the Blair Witch Project. With some
strong language. [S]
