With regard to Szasz, Laing and their critics, please could someone/anyone
suggest some good books to study in
relation to 'Is mental illness really an illness or set of illnesses and what
are their characteristics?"

One thing that you can be sure of when you read Szasz is that you will be engage in critical thinking which is something completely lacking in psychiatry today...
