What is intelligence?   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #1212 of 1997 |
Mira,

I don't believe you ever answered my questions about intelligence.
Do you use the word intelligence? Of course, you use the word. And
your friends use the word. You said your friends say you are an
intelligent person. You apparently dismiss a conventional
definition of the term, i.e. intelligence is what IQ tests measure.
I believe you do not think IQ tests are valid instruments to measure
a person's IQ. So how do you decide if a person is intelligent,
since you describe some people as being intelligent? Do you find
that some people are more intelligent than others by your
definition? How do you decide if a person is intelligent and how
the person may compare to other people in being intelligent? Do you
try to quantify your observations?

If you would tell me why you want to deny the validity of IQ tests,
I would be very interested. Is it because IQ tests show that people
are unequal in the quality of intelligence? But I believe you will
tell us that even using your definition of intelligence, people are
unequal. Why then are you bothered by the fact that IQ tests reveal
that there is a great range of IQ among people?
