Hello Friends
Subject says it all. Most, if not all of us, would not be friends had we not discovered the music of the Grateful Dead. Me, 1974, in the bedroom that my best friend, to this day, Adam shared with his much older brother, Lee. Skeletons in the Closet, What a Long Strange Trip its Been and Workingman's Dead. It would be six years later that I would see my first Dead show. I was miracled by the road crew because they came into my cousin's restaurant in Pikesville, Maryland, where I was working as a busboy. When they learned I did not have a ticket, I was guest listed.
Well the BUS did come by and I DID get on. We all did. Over and Over again. We all gathered in great places and saw huge swaths of this wonderful land. The music of Jerry begot so many countless others. I sure jumped on their buses and still do. Two Phish shows this week. 6 this summer and what not. I DO NOT ever believe that the music can be TRULY replicated but I am glad that others picked up the torch. Each with its own unique scene.
It was a good time for Jerry to land in all of our laps. I know he was just a man and believe me as someone in the Wharfrats, I know his foibles oh too well. But I do know that being part of the Dead community was the first real community I had been in. It was around me in junior high and high school. Some would argue that my school, Pikesville Sr High, was Deadhead central. I remember Adam Berg with a Stealie painted on top of his lacrosse helmet. This community led to many others. In Judaism, we have the concept of Tikum Olam, repairing the world. It happens by being part of something to make this place a little better. Is there any wonder, why so many Jews are Deadies?? Hey Tracy, have you seen my Jews for Jerry button?
What was inspired from this man, his music and the extended family, allowed me to become the hippy lawyer, and more importantly the man, I am today. No veering away and more at ease with my truth than ever.
So the UPDATE ( for you add ons, the UPDATE is a music blog I run in Southeast MI keeping people abreast of the scene) would like to share a little bit pf JJG with you all today. SEE BELOW> As some of you know, my dad's (alhashalom) name was Jerome. So, I will forever be a JERRY'S KID!!!!
Rest in peace my old friend. THANKS FOR BEING!!!!!!
