I remember both. For JFK, I was home and first heard it with my Mom while
listening to the radio.
For Jerry, I was in Oregon visiting a friend. She wasn't a deadhead but she was
a good sober friend so I had some support around. I received a phone call, and
the first words were "Did you hear...?" and I knew. He looked so terrible at the
last few dates on tour...and then we knew about rehab....was just a matter of
time...
It was so ironic for me though. When I was a kid, I ran away on dead tour so my
Mom and stepdad hated the dead. Plus all the DRUGS....
When Jerry died, my stepdad offered to buy me a plane ticket to SF from Oregon
so I could attend the memorial. I decided I couldn't handle all that sadness and
emotional intensity in one place so - I went up to Washington, met another
friend who is a deadhead and we did our own memorial while hiking in the Hohrain
forest on the Olympic peninsular. Later I went to an AA meeting in Oregon and
shared and there were people there like us who understood.
I still miss Jerry.
