Or did the button the side for the chat room that was here last week
disappear? Are the chats staying in the other room Kim? Now, I'm
totally confused. Nothing new for me but still...lol

This is sort of old information, but I thought I would pass this along for
those who don't already know:

A few weeks ago Yahoo started a new marketing campaign that is set to send
you various types of spam. To turn it off, you will need to go to:

http://subscribe.yahoo.com/showaccount

You can also get to this page by clicking on "Account Info" at the top right
of any Yahoo Groups page. On the next page in the Member Information
section, click on "Edit your marketing preferences" link.

Just click on as many "No"s as needed (there's a few of them), and the check
boxes near the bottom. Then click on the "Saved Changes" button at the
bottom.

I know what you're talking about Deb, and I know that can be a real pain!
Not only when viewing Expanded messages but also when people are receiving
digests in their email. And that's an important reminder to bring up every
so often.

What I was talking about was different. I was looking at messages that were
done before the conversion, before people could reply via email and the
previous message didn't appear in their web reply. When I click on Expanded
Messages, then on Thread, it took me to this page:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecleftclub/messages/10754?threaded=1&expand=
1 (it might take you to the same list of messages) which had message numbers
10754, 10710, 10712, 10714, 10722, 10726, 10728, 10737, 10730, 10734, 10738,
10740, 10746, 10743, 10744

Then I clicked on Next as was taken here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecleftclub/messages/10710?threaded=1&expand=
1 which had message numbers 10710, 10712, 10714, 10722, 10726, 10728, 10737,
10730, 10734, 10738, 10740, 10746, 10743, 10744, 10747 , which were all on
the previous page except the first and last message.

This may have improved with the new messages made after the conversion, and
maybe messages in long threads won't be repeated quite like that...we'll
just have to wait and see.

I had email Yahoo a few weeks ago suggesting that they put in a link to the
message that was being replied to in each one of those gray message bars in
Expanded Mode, sort of like it was with clubs where there was "Reply to
message # by Username" (or whatever it said). Delphi Forums does a similar
thing. But I haven't gotten a reply from Yahoo yet :\ .

Kim, the reason that the same messages are repeated several times over
is because folks don't delete the message they are replying to. For
instance, as I am writing this reply in e-mail (and it would also show
at the club, by the way), I can see your post, and my other post. But I
will eliminate those before I click *send*.

That way when you see THIS meassage, you will not get the repeats.

If everyone would delete the message they are replying to, then the
threads wouldn't get so crazy! Just like replying to any other e-mail,
you can delete the message, or portions of it if you need to focus on
something you're replying to.

Hope this helps a little!

Hmmm, I just looked at that, but there's still problems. When I clicked on
next, it would have some of the same messages on the page (I guess this is
done so you can follow along in the same thread). When I look at it from a
new user standpoint, it could be easily seen by some as too much linking
around to just read and reply and not get hassled by Yahoo's ads. That was
one of the things I liked about Smartgroups... no extra clicking around each
time you want to read and reply to messages, and with no intrusive banners
or popups.

I just set up my Norton program to block the ads and now the groups look the
way it should... wow what a difference! I just made the change last night
but forgot this morning and for a moment I though Yahoo got rid of those big
block ads in the messages. But as soon as I disabled Norton, I saw the ads
again :(. Since I know not everyone has Norton, I have to take that into
account :( And I wouldn't want people to download and install something to
just enjoy the group.

The problem with the expanded messages is that you need to scroll down to
the bottom of the page to read the more recent messages. If the recent ones
were at the top, it would be less of a problem. Also it's trickier to
follow threads.

As it being better on Yahoo for the exposure, that can be easily worked
around. I would just have a link in the welcome message to the new group.
I did this with the branch groups when we first went to Smartgroups. It
would be something like I have at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cleftclubac
. I had also altered the welcome message there if someone joined who hadn't
read the front page of the group.

I just think it will turn off a number of future members with all the ads.
It reminds me a few years ago of when I would drink tea with lemon. I put
in so much lemon, my family would kid me saying "Would you like a little tea
with your lemon?" LOL...Like here it's "Would you like a group with the
ads?", except of course I didn't add the ads ;)

I would have to agree with Peter...I truly believe the group will
reach more people remaining at Yahoo. While I hate the constant ads,
there is a little fix around it...so perhaps this would sway the vote
a little.

From the Message Index (the list of messages), choose the Expanded
Messages option. You will then see several messages on one page,
without an ad for each message.

The most important thing for everyone to remember about replying to
messages is to ELIMINATE the previous message from your reply...or
limit to the part you are replying to...that will prevent all the
repeats not only in email, but in the Expanded Message mode.

What do you think?

deb
debbie@...

P.S. At Cleft Advocate, I deleted the Yahoo link, replacing it with
the SmartGroups link; however, I've changed it back today. I truly
believe, even with the lost numbers due to bad e-mail addresses, that
this forum will reach more people simply becuase of the yahoo name.

It is so nice to have the group back.

I must say, I thought Smartgroups had some interesting features but
it is good to see the group back on Yahoo. I am sure some people
are more likely to see it here (although that is impossible to
quantify).

The voting that I started last night will affect not only the main
group but also where the branch groups are also held. If the
majority vote goes to one place, Cleft Club AC (Adult Clefties), TC

I have those groups set up both on Yahoo and Smartgroups. You can

I extended the vote until midnight May 17th. So far there are 12
votes. I might extend it longer if there's not enough votes... 50
would be good. You can vote for either Smartgroups, Yahoo, or I

Hi Kim,
as delighted as I am that this club has not been totally lost, lol, I
have to ask you already a favour.
Basically, I would like you to delete my photo's. They are in
Amyoneinamillions album. As they came with the conversion, I am not
able to delete them myself. And, to be honest, the idea that anybody
could send my pics out as a greeting card or could order
prints...it's just doesn't appeal to me at all! Afterall, you never
know,eh. I hope you understand, though, I'm sorry, that I have to
bother you!
By the way, I'm not to fussed, where the club is in the end, as long
as it is somewhere,lol!
Bye and take care,
Kerstin

We're the same group... Yahoo was just slower than molasses to finish
our conversion. If Smartgroups was around in 1999 and I created the
group there instead of Yahoo, that one would be a few hundred ;)

I think this group will drop off at least 100 members, maybe 200 once
the broken email addresses are removed (that happens automatically by
Yahoo). It's already dropped 25. Back when we were still a Yahoo
Club and I would send out club-wide emails (messages that would be
sent to all members), I would get back a *TON* of "Message
Undeliverable" saying that the address is not longer valid.

After an almost 2 month wait, our club now has finished becoming a
Yahoo Group. You can see it at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thecleftclub/

Anyone who has missed it, we had temporarily met at Cleft Club Debate
here on Yahoo while the conversion was taking place. While there
however, I found a place to move the group since everyone was not to
crazy about what Yahoo had done, especailly with the onslaught of
ads. We settled at a place called Smartgroups where I put up a
group for everyone to check out and use. It has steadiliy grown
(over 90 members right now) and we've had some decent activity
(almost 300 messages so far):

http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/cleftclub

Since Yahoo is done with our conversion, I have put up a vote over at
the Smartgroups (can't put a vote here on Yahoo... for some reason
they won't let me do any votes :( ) for you to vote which one you
would like to use.

In order to vote, you will need to become a member of the Cleft Club
at SmartGroups (a good chance for you to see what they offer over
there). To vote:

http://www.smartgroups.com/vote/votevote.cfm?EID=1088755&GID=1102434

I have a list of pros and cons of each place here:

http://www.smartgroups.com/message/readmessage.cfm?
gid=1102434&messageid=478 (to read it, you'll need to become a member)

The results will be shown after the poll closes. If you have any
problems or uestions , just ask :).

BTW - if you haven't seen it yet, I have revamped the club's site and
have it's own dot com:

http://CleftClub.com

Well I found the cleftclub on yahoo (or so I thought) a few weeks back. I

group on yahoo with almost 800 members!! *G*.

If you want to know anymore just IM me.

Now off to vote in that poll :)
