Subject: Head Lice Are Coming And They Are Resistant.........

Researchers aim to control treatment-resistant head lice

BOSTON, Aug. 20 -- The start of each new school year brings with it an increased risk that your child will be among the 6-12 million youngsters nationwide who come home with head lice. And to make matters worse, mutant strains of head lice that are resistant to conventional treatment are on the rise in the United States.

In an all-out effort to learn how to defeat resistance in lice, scientists at the University of Massachusetts say they are the first to come up with a way to actually grow colonies of mutated lice in their laboratory for closer study. Kyong Yoon, a Ph.D. student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, described the work to scientists attending the 224th national meeting of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

The most common ingredient in various products used to treat head lice is permethrin, an insecticide derived from natural compounds in chrysanthemum flowers, according to John Clark, Ph.D., a professor in the university's department of entomology and Yoon's faculty advisor.

The researchers hope their work will lead to new ways to control head lice.

In limited sampling studies of people in various parts of the United States, resistance to permethrin has ranged from 50 percent in some Los Angeles school children to about 98 percent in a migrant workers' camp in Florida, Clark noted during a telephone interview. Clark's research group also did sampling in Texas where resistance was found to be 75-80 percent. His group is aware of resistance in Boston and western Massachusetts although they have not yet measured the level of resistance, he added.

Clark and Yoon are the first researchers to develop an artificial feeding system that allows them to raise their own mutant lice for study.

"Our work is the first report of artificially rearing human head lice and carrying out a molecular linkage study in U.S. populations," according to Clark.

"We have a membrane and automatic blood feeding system that allows us to rear these things on little hair tufts," Clark said. "We just cut little hair tufts and make teepees out of them and the head lice kind of sit on this membrane and they think they're on a scalp and they wander down and take a blood meal and then go back up."

The controlled environment allows the scientists to examine the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of resistance and monitor the frequency of the mutations that cause resistance, Clark noted.

"We don't have an effective control process out there. That means they're becoming harder to control and the chances of increased infestation are certainly higher," Clark said. "The longevity of effective control provided by permethrin is in serious jeopardy unless effective monitoring of this resistance is begun and coupled with the use of new and novel acting pediculicides."

Permethrin is a neurotoxin that kills nonresistant lice by attacking the nervous system, similar to the mode of action of DDT, an insecticide once in common use in the United States. But unlike DDT, "permethrin is one of the least toxic and environmentally safe insecticides available," Clark added. (I disagree.  Please read the report on permethrin at: http://www.safe2use.com/poisons-pesticides/pesticides/permethrin/cox-report/cox.htm )

DDT (1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane) was banned in this country in 1973 because of concerns about human health and insect resistance but it is still used in some parts of the world. At one time, DDT was used as a treatment for body lice, according to Clark.

Permethrin and DDT work by causing a channel -- specifically, the voltage-sensitive sodium channel -- in the lice's nervous system to stay open too long. This apparently paralyzes the insect so it is unable to eat, although no one is sure of the actual cause of death, Clark noted. But in permethrin-resistant lice, mutations in the channel prevent it from staying open long enough to kill the lice.

Clark's lab was the first to identify these mutations about two years ago.

Because of the similarities in how permethrin and DDT kill insects, Clark thinks the huge amounts of DDT that were used in the past may be a contributing factor in the development of permethrin resistance in lice. But overuse of permethrin products is probably the bigger contributor to resistance, he added.

"I believe, and a lot of other people that study resistance believe, that it's the misuse of these over-the-counter products that have been the real problem in terms of selecting resistance."

Clark says the ability to raise human head lice in a laboratory setting also allows his group to investigate what role lice may have in disease transmission, even including agents of bioterrorism, such as anthrax.

"We're really interested in this whole aspect of bioterrorism, particularly cutaneous anthrax," Clark pointed out. "You'd have a lot of problems in cities and that's probably where these bioterrorism agents are going to be disseminated."

"If you had like eight percent of your children in the cities with open head wounds [caused by feeding lice], and somebody comes and dumps a lot of cutaneous anthrax on everybody, there's a real chance that these kids can be at high risk for infection," Clark explained.

Another area of interest to Clark's research group is finding effective alternative treatments. "We have identified a number of natural products, such as terpinen-4-ol from tea tree oil, that are safe and novel alternatives to permethrin," he said.

The next compound that is likely to come on the market for the treatment of head lice is ivermectin, according to Clark. "It's the major compound we use to worm horses and cows and sheep and things like that." When the compound was used in Africa by the World Health Organization to kill parasitic worms that cause river blindness, it was discovered that children given the product had no fleas or lice on them.

Clark says there are some physicians who are already giving ivermectin to people to control hard-to-treat cases of head lice.

The poster on this research, AGRO 47, will be presented at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 20, at the Marriott Copley Place, University Hall, during the "Agrochemical Educational Awards for Graduate Student Travel" poster session.

Kyong Yoon, is a Ph.D. student at the University of Massachusetts, Department of Entomology, in Amherst, Mass.

John Clark, Ph.D., is a professor at the University of Massachusetts, Department of Entomology, in Amherst, Mass.

Overuse of Lice Control Chemicals

Persistent infestation was the concern of a county task force, defining "persistent lice as three incidents of live lice over a 6-week period", but the panel was also concerned about the risks of chemical pesticide exposure. Literature review identified factors that contribute to overuse of chemical pesticides for persistent lice.

Inadequate safety information was considered the absence of information accompanying commercial products about how many times or how often a product could be safely used. Given the non-prescription status, caretakers may assume repeated use is safe. The readability of instructions was found to be 8th to 10th grade levels, too high for many users, and lacking simple pictures to show safe use, e.g., exposure time, rinsing over a sink.

The "kill time" for lice (pediculicide/POISON) products can vary from 10 minutes to hours, but an effective product will kill lice (not nits) within its recommended application time if the concentration and saturation are as directed. Increasing time beyond the recommended duration does not increase its effectiveness. (Note: resistant lice and/or nits are simply not killed by these pediculicide POISONS.)

Misdiagnosis of lice and attempts to determine the viability of nits underscored the recommendation to remove nits as part of initial treatment. One study suggested that in warm climates, viable nits are found further than one-fourth inch from the scalp - considered by some to indicate an empty egg case.

Rinsing lice shampoo in a shower or tub was seen as an unnecessary skin exposure to pesticide. Consumers view the product as a "medicated" shampoo, not a pesticide. The product ought to be rinsed over a sink to limit skin exposure, but only one product included this in its directions or suggestions.

Prophylactic use of lice shampoos is an inappropriate response except within the FDA approval of the permethrin-based product. However, the definition of "epidemic" is unclear, and preventive treatments may increase the risk of lice resistance as well as chemical overexposure. Lice treatment products should be stored out of reach of children, as with any pesticide, not with the household shampoos typically within children's access. (Gordon S. J Sch Nurs 1999;15(5):6-9)

COMMENT: The unique feature of the above study was that a county health district funded this lice treatment and prevention project which brings objectivity to the discussion of treatment. But, far more shocking was the more recent study that compared mothers of typically developing children, with mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders that found the autistic mothers were twice as likely to report that they had shampooed their pets with pyrethrin-containing antiflea/antitick shampoos around the time of their pregnancy. The findings were presented by lead study author Irva Hertz-Picciotto, PhD, from the University of California, Davis, at the 7th Annual International Meeting for Autism Research. http://www.medscape.com/viewprogram/12626

Why use dangerous and ineffective POISONS?  Why not use a safe and far more effective lice and nit remover that is FDA registered as a medical device?  Lice R Gone has a money-back guranatee.  Please see:  http://www.licergone.com .

Head Lice a Common Back-to-School Problem - What is the Safe Solution?

An estimated 6 to 12 million head lice infestations occur each year among American children age 3 to 11, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Areas where groups of children commonly gather such as classrooms or daycare centers can play host to spreading the itchy bug. Although contracting head lice is unpleasant, there is no need to panic if your child happens to carry it home.

According to the World Health Organization, head lice is the most prevalent human parasitic infestation in the USA and Europe . Head lice are parasitic insects that survive by feeding off human blood and can be found in the hair, eyebrows and eyelashes. Lice are extremely contagious and are spread by close person-to-person contact, either directly or indirectly. Direct contact with an infested person can lead to an infestation as well as contact with an infested person’s belongings such as coats, hats, pillows and brushes.

Symptoms include a tickling feeling in the hair, frequent itching and sores on the scalp from scratching. Lice are easiest to detect at the neckline and behind the ears. There are three forms of lice: nits (eggs), nymphs and adults. An adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed and can survive on a human for up to 30 days. They usually cannot survive off the host for more than 24 hours.

There are many common myths about lice. Head lice cannot jump or fly, pets cannot transmit them, they are not known to spread disease. But, people panic when their child gets lice and usually buy pediculicide POISONS to "treat" their child.  I would like to note one of my favorite quotes: "Medical research has made such progress, that there are practically no healthy people any more." - Alduos Huxley.

Safe Solutions, Inc. has a patented, safe and very effective lice and nit remover called Lice R Gone that safely solves the back-to-school problem by quickly removing both lice and nits in a few minutes.  Lice R Gone is registered with the FDA as a medical device.  The Lice R Gone shampoo works so well there is a money-back guarantee.

The Institute of Pest Management, Inc and the author of THE BEST CONTROL II have tested and found Safe Solutions Lice R Gone® to be the safest, fastest and most economical lice and nit removal solution on the market, priced at just over a dollar per treatment, you simply can't afford to use anything else!

Junked science: Ideology trumps research in Bush administration By Susan Frick Carlman -Columnist Plainfield Sun - Plainfield, IL,USA - 8/15/08

Religion and politics aren't good dinner-table guests, we're often reminded.  But what about science?

As a regime change in Washington quickly grows near, a lot of us can't help but feel hopeful that attitudes toward the free flow of information - especially the sound, well-documented kind of information - at last will change. A lot.

Ironic as it seems in this age of instant communication, the current administration has been by far the most secretive in modern times, repeatedly going far beyond the caution called for by the crusade against terrorists. In 2004 alone, the Bush administration spent $7.2 billion to classify some 15.6 million public documents.

But perhaps the most flagrant cover-up behavior of all is the way the administration again and again has junked the findings of good research when they haven't fallen in line with the ideologies of the people in power.

This has been going on for a while. I first wrote about it in this space seven years ago, shortly after then-Surgeon General David Satcher was chastised by the administration because he reported that research did not support abstinence-only as an effective approach to sex education. Satcher's big offense was calling on schools to discuss birth control with teens and urging communities to support health clinics that provide contraception. Now, $1.5 billion in abstinence-only sex ed funding later, teen pregnancy rates are up, the National Institutes of Health reported last month. And
half of all new HIV cases now occur in people younger than 25.

That's just one instance of this president dismissing scholars' findings that he has found inconvenient. In many cases, the weapon wielded to put these pesky conclusions in their place is the funding cut. The program that monitors pollutants spewed by industry, the Toxic Release Inventory, has seen drastic budget cuts in recent years. So has Mission to Planet Earth, NASA's research program that documents environmental degradation. Call me a cynic, but I have to believe there's some connection somewhere between those funding reductions and the president's well-documented doubts about the existence of a problem involving climate change.

The corruption of information has trickled through an assortment of federal agencies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suppressed health data about ground zero in the wake of Sept. 11, 2001; today, many of the responders and nearby residents are seriously ill because the air in the vicinity of the devastation was so very toxic, even though then-EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman had said again and again that the dust hovering over the attack site wasn't harmful.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission also has blood on its hands.

"A political appointee at my agency prevented my research on all-terrain-vehicle safety from reaching the public, even when deaths and injuries occurred," former CPSC statistician Robin Ingle said in wire reports earlier this year.

The Union of Concerned Scientists, which has followed the administration's doings within the research community, reports that some 1,200 scientists working for assorted federal agencies have told the group they fear backlash from their superiors because their studies have reached findings at odds with corporate or other interests.

"When science is falsified, fabricated or censored, Americans' health and safety suffer," Francesca Grifo, a former government researcher who now leads the organization, was quoted as saying.

Last winter at a gathering sponsored by the UCS, about 15,000 government scientists put their signatures on a statement imploring Congress to do what it can to protect scientific integrity. The signers included such empirical heavyweights as Harold Varmus, president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and former director of the National Institutes of Health; and Anthony Robbins, professor of medicine at Tufts University and former director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

So it's not just me indulging in another Bush-bashing rant. These are real scientists here in my corner.

We all hope that this time around, we'll do better.

Breast Cancer Link: Common Herbicide Disrupts Human Hormone

by Leslee Dru Browning

(NaturalNews) A common weedkiller in the U.S., already suspected of causing sexual abnormalities in frogs and fish, has now been found to alter hormonal signaling in human cells, scientists from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) report.

The herbicide atrazine is the second most widely used weedkiller in the U.S., applied to corn and sorghum fields throughout the Midwest and also spread on suburban lawns and gardens. It was banned in Europe after studies linked the chemical to endocrine disruptions in fish and amphibians.

The UCSF study is the first to identify the pesticide's full effect on human cells. It was reported in the May 7 issue of the journal "PLoS One."

In studies with human placental cells in culture, the UCSF scientists found that atrazine increased the activity of a gene associated with abnormal human birth weight when over-expressed in the placenta. Atrazine also targeted a second gene that has been found to be amplified in the uterus of women with unexplained infertility.

In parallel studies of zebrafish, a widely used animal in development studies, the research team showed that atrazine "feminized" the fish population -- increasing the proportion of fish that developed into females. In water with atrazine concentrations comparable to those found in runoff from agricultural fields, the proportion of female fish increased two-fold. Environmental factors are known to influence the sex of zebrafish and many other fish and amphibians as they develop.

"These fish are very sensitive to endocrine disrupting chemicals, so one might think of them as 'sentinels' to potential developmental dangers in humans," said Holly Ingraham, PhD, senior author on the study and a UCSF Professor of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology. "These atrazine-sensitive genes are central to normal reproduction and are found in steroid producing tissues. You have to wonder about the long-term effects of exposing the rapidly developing fetus to atrazine or other endocrine disruptors."

Ingraham intends to determine precisely how atrazine affects human and other mammalian endocrine cells and why these cells are particularly sensitive to it. She notes that bisphenol A, a compound in many hard plastic consumer products, is also an endocrine disrupter and is now under increased study for its safety. In April, Canada announced a decision to ban the sale of consumer products with bisphenol A.

The lead author of the study is Miyuki Suzawa, a postdoctoral fellow in Ingraham's lab.

UCSF researchers exposed sexually immature zebrafish to atrazine and other chemicals for different periods of time. They found that exposure to atrazine for 48 hours at concentrations that might be found in water containing agricultural runoff, produced twice as many female fish.

Through genetic analysis, they found that atrazine preferentially activates a class of receptors in the cell nucleus, including two known as SF-1 and LRH-1. SF-1 regulates production of enzymes involved in the synthesis of steroids in the body and development of many endocrine tissues. One of these enzymes, known as Aromatase, plays a role in determining whether lower vertebrates, such as fish will become male or female. Aromatase is known as a feminizing enzyme.

In the human placental cell culture studies, the scientists found that a 24-hour exposure to atrazine activates a cluster of genes involved in hormone signaling and steroid synthesis.

They report, "Endocrine-related cell types with a capacity for steroid generation appear to be especially sensitive (to Atrazine), as demonstrated by the "exquisite" cellular specificity of the atrazine response."

The finding that a pervasive and persistent environmental chemical appears to significantly change hormone networks means that scientists must take a broader look at this herbicide's potential effect on human health, Ingraham said. Up to now, much of the focus has been on breast cancer, but since proper development of the endocrine system is important for normal reproduction, stress responses and metabolism, early exposure to this chemical in a fetus or infant might alter normal physiology later in life, she said.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

IPM does not stand for "Include Pesticides Monthly".

When I attended an IPM (integrated Pest Management) meeting several years ago in Michigan, I listened to a Department of Agriculture (DOA) "regulator" explain that IPM meant going into an account asking a few questions and then spraying (POISON).

Last week I talked with a young man who was trying to provide non-toxic IPM to the people of Indiana - he told me that an Indiana "regulator" told him that if he caught cockroaches in his hand and drowned them in a glass of water - he would be quilty of using an unregistered pesticide!  No wonder that over half of Americans are now chronically ill.

The object is to try to kill pests without killing yourself and/or the earth.  The question I always ask pest control people is very simple.  "Are you in the pest control business or the POISON application buSINess?

How to kill pests without killing yourself or the earth...... After 45 years in toxic and non-toxic pest control, I have just finished re-writing my free IPM encyclopedia entitled: THE BEST CONTROL II, that contains over 2,800 safe and far more effective alternatives to pesticide POISONS. This latest copyrighted work is free and about 1,800 pages in length and is now being updated at my new website at http://www.stephentvedten.com/ .

There is simply no need to POISON yourself or your family or to have any pest problems.

It is unbelievable that Bush is calling the Russians "bullies" because the Russians are making a move on Georgia.  The Bush and McCain military approaches to other nations have precisely inspired the Russian imitation.  How can Bush complain following his own pre-emptive Iraq invasion as model?  And our military is in real jeopardy now with potential explosions towards us in Iraq and Afghanistan which Bush/McCain may or may not know flank Iran.

The truth, hidden by most of the corporate news media, is that Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili unleashed his U.S.- and Israeli-armed and-trained forces on the tiny autonomous region of South Ossetia, murdering civilians and attacking Russian peacekeeping troops stationed there. Only then did Russian troops respond.

Now we are putting missles in Poland - do you remember the missles in Cuba, and how we reacted?
...................................................................................................................

Please send this message to President Bush, Vice President Cheney,
Congressional Leaders, the United Nations, NATO
Command,
and major U.S. corporate media:

U.S. Hands Off Georgia and Russia - END NATO NOW!

TELL BUSH, CHENEY, RICE AND CONGRESS: U.S. HANDS OFF GEORGIA AND RUSSIA - NO NEW WAR - END NATO NOW!

It is with growing concern that we observe that the U.S. government is threatening new military moves that carry the danger of another war-this time against Russia.

The Bush regime and the corporate U.S. news media have launched an anti-Russia hate campaign. Yet just as with the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and the threats on Iran, the threatened military confrontation with Russia is also based on a lie.

The truth, hidden by most of the corporate news media, is that Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili, unleashed his U.S.- and Israeli-armed and-trained forces on the tiny autonomous region of South Ossetia, murdering civilians and attacking Russian peacekeeping troops stationed there. Only then did Russian troops respond.

Saakashvili is the president who sent 2,000 Georgian youth to join the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq. The U.S. supplies the weapons to his army. U.S. Special Forces and Israeli advisers and mercenary contractors direct the Georgian military, which just held three weeks of joint exercises with the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in July. We must take note that like Iraq and Iran, Georgia itself is a prize for U.S. oil companies, as it is a major transit point for Central Asian oil.

There is little doubt that U.S. arming of Georgia and its push to get Georgia into NATO set the scene for the Georgian invasion of South Ossetia and created the threat of a new major war. Now Washington also threatens Russia by placing missile bases  in Poland and the Czech Republic against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people there. Surrounding Russia with this military alliance of new NATO members is the greatest danger to peace and stability on a global scale.

It is time to remember that NATO was established as an anti-USSR military alliance aimed at reinforcing capitalist control and preventing socialist revolutions in the colonialist powers of Europe weakened by World War II. Since the end of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, the U.S. has attempted to vastly expand NATO and turn it into a military instrument to consolidate U.S. corporate power, surround Russia and China and re-conquer the former colonial world.

Consider these examples:

Yugoslavia. Based on the lie that NATO was defending small nations, U.S.-NATO intervention and bombing destroyed multinational Yugoslavia and turned the Balkans into a collection of dependent ministates ruled by the U.S. and Western Europe powers.

Afghanistan. Based on the lie that this was a police action against terrorists, U.S.-NATO have carried out a seven-year occupation leaving the country in ruins and enslaved.

Iraq. Here the lie about weapons of mass destruction was so blatant, and the U.S. position so weak, that most NATO countries refused to join the occupation and utter destruction of Iraq.

No one can believe Bush is promoting peace in Georgia. It is time not only to stop this expansion but to end the NATO war machine completely by dissolving NATO.

It is encouraging to anti-war people worldwide that Georgians themselves have issued a statement condemning the Saakashvili machine. "The entire responsibility for this fratricidal war," the Georgian Peace Committee says, "for thousands of children, women and elderly dead people, for the inhabitants of South Ossetia and of Georgia falls exclusively on the current president, on the Parliament and on the government of Georgia." (Aug. 11)

We cannot do less than the people of Georgia who oppose the current president and want no part of NATO. We demand from Washington:

(1) Stop interfering in
Georgia and the Caucasus

(2) Stop attempting to expand the NATO military organization into the countries of Eastern Europe and those that border on Russia.

(3) End the aggressive NATO military alliance

(4) No new wars!

Commonly used pesticides present serious health risks for dogs and people.

One of my dogs recently had her regular check-up at our veterinarian's office, where despite my oft-stated concerns over pesticide safety I was convinced to buy an expensive product to keep fleas, ticks and mosquitoes at bay during this exceptionally buggy summer.

It's perfectly safe, the doctor assured me.

As it turns out, she was wrong -- but she had no way of knowing that because of secrecy on the part of federal pesticide regulators.

The product in question was Advantix, a once-a-month topical treatment for dogs developed by Bayer. One of the active ingredients in Advantix is permethrin, a member of the family of synthetic chemicals called pyrethroids, which are similar to the potent natural pesticide pyrethrin produced from chrysanthemums. Permethrin is also used on crops and to treat head lice and scabies in humans, and it's found in popular home insect sprays.

But a groundbreaking new report by the Center for Public Integrity -- based on a decade's worth of adverse incident reports filed by pesticide manufacturers with the Environmental Protection Agency -- documents serious safety problems with permethrin and other pyrethroids:
An analysis of EPA data by the Center for Public Integrity ... shows that the number of reported human health problems, including severe reactions, attributed to pyrethrins and pyrethroids increased by about 300 percent over the past decade. A Center review of the past 10 years' worth of more than 90,000 adverse-reaction reports, filed with the EPA by pesticide manufacturers, found that pyrethrins and pyrethroids together accounted for more than 26 percent of all fatal, "major," and "moderate" human incidents in the United States in 2007, up from 15 percent in 1998. Although the number of fatalities was low -- about 20 from 2003 to 2007 -- the amount of moderate and serious incidents attributed to the group -- more than 6,000 -- is significantly greater than any other class of insecticide.
Accompanying its study, CPI has created a searchable database of pesticide incident reports based on EPA data that has not been public until now. Deemed one of the "10 Most Wanted Government Documents by the Center for Democracy and Technology, the EPA's database was released to CPI earlier this year under the Freedom of Information Act.

It shows that in North Carolina there have been five reported incidents involving Advantix and moderate adverse effects on humans.

The EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs hadn't planned to examine the health effects of this class of chemicals until 2010, but it now says it will expedite the process.

How Do You Treat A Pubic Lice Infestation? August 1, 2008 by naturalwellness

All lice are parasites and an infestation of these little blood suckers, (really, they are blood suckers), can be frightening and embarrassing. You may ask, How do some lice end up in certain places on the body? Do they choose where they want to live? The answer is no. The answer is that there are 3 different species of lice that live on humans and they are:

  • Pediculus humanus (Head lice)
  • Pediculus humanus corporis (Body louse, clothes louse)
  • Pthirus pubis (“Crab” louse, pubic louse)

Pubic lice AKA “Crabs” or “Crab Lice” are spread from person to person by sexual contact. They are very rarely spread by clothing, bedding or toilet seats.

A pubic lice infestation is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease.Like any sexually transmitted disease, people who are sexual contacts need to be examined for crab lice and treated and sexual contact between the infested person and their sexual contact should be avoided until the parties are treated and reevaluated to make sure the infestation is gone.

The crab lice removal products that you will find at the drugstore are all pesticides that are highly toxic. Unfortunately, we are being bombarded daily by more and more toxins in our environment and the last thing you want to do is to add to the toxic load that you are carrying. Most substances that you put on your skin will get absorbed and you do not want toxic your skin to absorb pesticides!

It is hard to believe that pesticides would be allowed on the market for human use but they are. Recently, I read a book, “The Brain Wash” by Michele Schroffro Cook who is a naturopathic physician. She estimates that in just 15 years, there will be more people suffering with brain diseases than there will be people suffering with all cancers and heart disease combined. This frightening prophecy has been well thought out based on the increasing number of toxins that we are exposed to on a daily basis. Most of these toxins are disguised in the form of medicines and personal care products. But pesticides are pretty obvious toxins and you do not want to use them. You need to use a totally safe and natural product that has thankfully been invented..

An ingenious natural pubic lice treatment that is both safe and effective is Genitrex. Genitrex is a gentle shampoo that contains enzymes that break open lice on contact. When the enzymes break open the exoskeleton of the louse, it basically implodes. So, as you wash the area of infestation, you wash away the crab lice and their eggs or nits that the louse has attached to your hairshafts. The glue that the louse makes to hold the nits to the hair is dissolved by Genitrex so after one use, 99% of all crab lice and their nits are gone! Genitrex ends the nightmare of pubic lice AKA crab lice safely! (See also: http://www.controlpubiclice.com )  There is also a product made specifically for head lice that was discussed in a previous blog entry. Lice R Gone is a natural head lice treatment that is an enzyme filled shampoo that removes head lice naturally and on contact. http://www.licergone.com

Massive US Naval Armada Heads For Iran - 8/7/08

Operation Brimstone ended only one week ago. This was the joint US/UK/French naval war games in the Atlantic Ocean preparing for a naval blockade of Iran and the likely resulting war in the Persian Gulf area. The massive war games included a US Navy supercarrier battle group, an US Navy expeditionary carrier battle group, a Royal Navy carrier battle group, a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine plus a large number of US Navy cruisers, destroyers and frigates playing the "enemy force".

The lead American ship in these war games, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71) and its Carrier Strike Group Two (CCSG-2) are now headed towards Iran along with the USS Ronald Reagon (CVN76) and its Carrier Strike Group Seven (CCSG-7) coming from Japan.

They are joining two existing USN battle groups in the Gulf area: the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) with its Carrier Strike Group Nine (CCSG-9); and the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) with its expeditionary strike group.

Likely also under way towards the Persian Gulf is the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and its expeditionary strike group, the UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal (R07) carrier battle group, assorted French naval assets including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste and French Naval Rafale fighter jets on-board the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These ships took part in the just completed Operation Brimstone.

The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran.

The US Naval forces being assembled include the following:

Carrier Strike Group Nine
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) nuclear powered supercarrier
with its Carrier Air Wing Two
Destroyer Squadron Nine:
USS Mobile Bay (CG53) guided missile cruiser
USS Russell (DDG59) guided missile destroyer
USS Momsen (DDG92) guided missile destroyer
USS Shoup (DDG86) guided missile destroyer
USS Ford (FFG54) guided missile frigate
USS Ingraham (FFG61) guided missile frigate
USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG60) guided missile frigate
USS Curts (FFG38) guided missile frigate
Plus one or more nuclear hunter-killer submarines

Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Group
USS Peleliu (LHA-5) a Tarawa-class amphibious assault carrier
USS Pearl Harbor (LSD52) assult ship
USS Dubuque (LPD8) assult ship/landing dock
USS Cape St. George (CG71) guided missile cruiser
USS Halsey (DDG97) guided missile destroyer
USS Benfold (DDG65) guided missile destroyer

Carrier Strike Group Two
USS Theodore Roosevelt (DVN71) nuclear powered supercarrier
with its Carrier Air Wing Eight
Destroyer Squadron 22
USS Monterey (CG61) guided missile cruiser
USS Mason (DDG87) guided missile destroyer
USS Nitze (DDG94) guided missile destroyer
USS Sullivans (DDG68) guided missile destroyer

USS Springfield (SSN761) nuclear powered hunter-killer submarine

IWO ESG ~ Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group
USS Iwo Jima (LHD7) amphibious assault carrier
with its Amphibious Squadron Four
and with its 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit
USS San Antonio (LPD17) assault ship
USS Velia Gulf (CG72) guided missile cruiser
USS Ramage (DDG61) guided missile destroyer
USS Carter Hall (LSD50) assault ship
USS Roosevelt (DDG80) guided missile destroyer

USS Hartfore (SSN768) nuclear powered hunter-killer submarine

Carrier Strike Group Seven
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN76) nuclear powered supercarrier
with its Carrier Air Wing 14
Destroyer Squadron 7
USS Chancellorsville (CG62) guided missile cruiser
USS Howard (DDG83) guided missile destroyer
USS Gridley (DDG101) guided missile destroyer
USS Decatur (DDG73) guided missile destroyer
USS Thach (FFG43) guided missile frigate
USNS Rainier (T-AOE-7) fast combat support ship

Also likely to join the battle armada:

UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal Carrier Strike Group with assorted guided missile destroyers and frigates, nuclear hunter-killer submarines and support ships

French Navy nuclear powered hunter-killer submarines (likely the Amethyste and perhaps others), plus French Naval Rafale fighter jets operating off of the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the French Carrier Charles de Gaulle is in dry dock, and assorted surface warships

Various other US Navy warships and submarines and support ships. The following USN ships took part (as the "enemy" forces) in Operation Brimstone and several may join in:

USS San Jacinto (CG56) guided missile cruiser
USS Anzio (CG68) guided missile cruiser
USS Normandy (CG60) guided missile cruiser
USS Carney (DDG64) guided missile destroyer
USS Oscar Austin (DDG79) guided missile destroyer
USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG81) guided missile destroyer
USS Carr (FFG52) guided missile frigate

The USS Iwo Jima and USS Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Groups have USMC Harrier jump jets and an assortment of assault and attack helicopters. The Expeditionary Strike Groups have powerful USMC Expeditionary Units with amphibious armor and ground forces trained for operating in shallow waters and in seizures of land assets, such as Qeshm Island (a 50 mile long island off of Bandar Abbas in the Gulf of Hormuz and headquarters of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps).

The large and very advanced nature of the US Naval warships is not only directed at Iran. There is a great fear that Russia and China may oppose the naval and air/land blockade of Iran. If Russian and perhaps Chinese naval warships escort commercial tankers to Iran in violation of the blockade it could be the most dangerous at-sea confrontation since the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US and allied Navies, by front loading a Naval blockade force with very powerful guided missile warships and strike carriers is attempting to have a force so powerful that Russia and China will not be tempted to mess with. This is a most serious game of military brinkmanship with major nuclear armed powers that have profound objections to the neo-con grand strategy and to western control of all of the Middle East's oil supply.

The Russian Navy this spring sent a major battle fleet into the Mediterranean headed by the modern aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov and the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, the Guided Missile Heavy Cruiser Moskva. This powerful fleet has at least 11 surface ships and unknown numbers of subs and can use the Russian naval facility at Syria's Tartous port for resupply. The Admiral Kuznetsov carries approximately 47 warplanes and 10 helicopters. The warplanes are mostly the powerful Su-33, a naval version (with mid-air refueling capability) of the Su-27 family. While the Su-33 is a very powerful warplane it lacks the power of the stealth USAF F-22. However, the Russians insist that they have developed a plasma based system that allows them to stealth any aircraft and a recent incident where Russian fighters were able to appear unannounced over a US Navy carrier battle group tends to confirm their claims. The Su-33 can be armed with the 3M82 Moskit sea-skimming missile (NATO code name SS-N-22 Sunburn) and the even more powerful P-800 Oniks (also named Yakhonts; NATO code name SS-N-26 Onyx). Both missiles are designed to kill US Navy supercarriers by getting past the cruiser/destroyer screen and the USN point-defense Phalanx system by using high supersonic speeds and violent end maneuvers. Russian subs currently use the underwater rocket VA-111 Shkval (Squall), which is fired from standard 533mm torpedo tubes and reaches a speed of 360kph (230mph) underwater. There is no effective countermeasures to this system and no western counterpart.

A strategic diversion has been created for Russia. The Republic of Georgia, with US backing, is actively preparing for war on South Ossetia. The South Ossetia capital has been shelled and a large Georgian tank force has been heading towards the border. Russia has stated that it will not sit by and allow the Georgians to attack South Ossetia. The Russians are great chess players and this game may not turn out so well for the neo-cons. UPDATE 8 August 2008 ~ War has broken out between Georgia and South Ossetia. At least 10 Russian troops have been killed and 30 wounded and 2 Russian fighter jets downed. American Marines, a thousand of them, have recently been in Georgia training the Georgian military forces. Several European nations stopped Bush and others from allowing Georgia into NATO. Russia is moving a large military force with armor towards the area. This could get bad, and remember it is just a strategic diversion....but one that could have horrific effects. Link to story "Russia sends forces into Georgia rebel conflict". FURTHER UPDATE ~ Russian military forces in active combat; now total of four Russian fighter jets reported downed. ADDITIONAL UPDATE ~ Georgia calls for US help; Russian Air Force bombs Georgian air bases. DEBKA, the Israeli strategy and military site, states that Israeli military officers are advising the Georgian armed forces in combat operations and that 1,000 Israelis are in-combat on the side of Georgia at this time.

Kuwait has activated its "Emergency War Plan" as it and other Gulf nations prepare for the likelihood of a major regional war in the Middle East involving weapons of mass destruction.

The two-ton elephant in the living room of the neo-con strategy is the advanced biowar (ABW) that Iran, and to a lessor extent Syria, has. This places the motherlands of the major neo-con nations (America, France, the United Kingdom), as well as Israel, in grave danger. When the Soviet Union fell the Iranians hired as many out-of-work former Soviet advanced biowar experts as possible. In the last 15 or so years they have helped to develop a truly world class ABW program utilizing recombination DNA genetic engineering technology to create a large number of man made killer viruses. This form of weapon system does not require high tech military delivery systems. The viruses are sub-microscopic and once seeded in a population use the population itself as vectors. Seeding can be done without notice in shopping malls, churches, and other public places. The only real defense to an advanced global strategic biowar attack is to lock down the population as rapidly as possible and let those infected die off.

Unless the public gets it act together and forces the neo-cons to stop the march to yet another war in the Middle East we are apt to see a truly horrific nightmare unfold in OUR COUNTRIES.

Do something about this ~ email this article to as many of your friends as possible and post it on as many sites as possible, demand that your political leaders stop this nonsense before it kills us all. The response of average people all over the world in emailing this article to friends and posting it on blogs and web sites everywhere is totally amazing. It is a real happening that I don't think has ever happened to this extent before. People, please start demanding of your elected leaders in Parliament/Congress that they oppose what is happening. The world is sliding into war as the war leaders hide behind the main stream media's attention focused on the Olympics. Demand that your local newspapers, television and radio stations begin giving real coverage to what is happening in Russia/Georgia and the Middle East. Do something while you still can.

ANALYSIS-US oil firms seek drilling access, but exports soar

Thu Jul 3, 2008 8:04pm BST
By Tom Doggett

WASHINGTON, July 3 (Reuters) - While the U.S. oil industry wants access to more federal lands to help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, American-based companies are shipping record amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel to other countries.

A record 1.6 million barrels a day in U.S. refined petroleum products were exported during the first four months of this year, up 33 percent from 1.2 million barrels a day over the same period in 2007. Shipments this February topped 1.8 million barrels a day for the first time during any month, according to final numbers from the Energy Department.

The surge in exports appears to contradict the pleas from the U.S. oil industry and the Bush administration for Congress to open more offshore waters and Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

"We can help alleviate shortages by drilling for oil and gas in our own country," President Bush told reporters this week. "We have got the opportunity to find more crude oil here at home."

"As a nation, we can have more control over our energy destiny by supplying more of the oil and natural gas we'll be consuming from resources here at home," Red Cavaney, president of the American Petroleum Institute, said in a letter last week to U.S. lawmakers.

But environmentalists and other opponents to expanding drilling areas could seize on the record exports to argue Congress should not open more acres if U.S. refineries are churning crude oil into petroleum products that are sent out of the American market.

"It doesn't look good to say: 'We need more oil.' But then export the refined products that you're getting. It doesn't seem to be consistent," said Jim Presswood, energy lobbyist for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

But many energy experts say oil and petroleum products are traded globally, and it may make economic sense to export gasoline refined along the U.S. Gulf Coast to Latin America and import European-refined gasoline to U.S. East Coast markets.

"The fact is that the (United States) participates in global markets for both crude and refined products, and there are any number of variables that impact supply and prices in those markets," said Bill Holbrook, spokesman for the National Petrochemicals and Refiners Association.

The White House said it was against requiring U.S. oil products to stay at home.

"Forbidding exports of U.S. petroleum reduces the incentive for domestic suppliers to produce, and could potentially lead to higher prices if U.S. production or refining declined," said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel.

The 1.6 million barrels a day in record petroleum exports represented 9 percent of total U.S. refining capacity of 17.6 million barrels a day.

However, with refiners operating at 85 percent of capacity during the January-April period, the shipments represented a much a larger share of total U.S. oil products produced.

The exports were also equal to half the 3.2 million barrels of gasoline, diesel fuel and other petroleum products the United States imported each day over the 4-month period.

The biggest share of U.S. oil products exported went to Mexico, Canada, Chile, Singapore and Brazil.

U.S. consumers are paying record prices for gasoline and diesel fuel, which the Bush administration blames in part on tight supplies.

While the administration argues that more supplies would help to bring down prices, U.S exports of diesel fuel in April averaged 387,000 barrels per day, up almost seven-fold from 59,000 barrels a day in the same month a year earlier.

U.S. gasoline shipments in April averaged 202,000 barrels a day, the most for the month since 1945, when America was sending fuel overseas to ease supply shortages in other countries during World War II. Gasoline exports in April 2007 were almost half at 116,000 barrels per day.

Residual fuel exports in April were 377,000 barrels per day, the fourth highest level for any month, and up 10 percent from 344,000 barrels per day a year earlier.

John Felmy, the chief economist at the American Petroleum Institute, said a portion of the oil products exported, especially diesel, was fuel that did not meet U.S. clean air requirements and therefore could not be sold in America. "You may have some that you're not able to use," he said.

Also, while U.S. gasoline demand is down due to high prices and a weak American economy, there is "strong economic growth outside the United States" where fuel is often subsidized and demand is high, said John Cook, director of EIA's Petroleum Division.

However, both the EIA and API admitted they did not know why daily U.S. gasoline exports to Canada skyrocketed to 41,000 barrels in January-April this year from 9,000 barrels in 2007.

The EIA said more U.S. diesel is going to Latin American to fuel power plants because of a shortage of natural gas in the region, and China has switched to diesel from coal to run some of its generating facilities in order to reduce smog ahead of the summer Olympics next month in Beijing. "Safe"
Pesticides Now First in Poisonings Center Unveils New Report Based on Internal EPA Data.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 31, 2008 — According to a new Center for Public Integrity investigation, Perils of the New Pesticides, pyrethrins and pyrethroids were responsible for more than 26 percent of all major and moderate human incidents involving pesticides in the United States in 2007, up from just 15 percent in 1998 — a 67 percent increase. This is based on an analysis of adverse reaction reports filed with the Environmental Protection Agency by pesticide manufacturers. http://www.publicintegrity.org/investigations/pesticides/pages/methodology

As a result of the Center’s investigation, the director of the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs said the agency would begin a broad study of the human health effects of these chemicals this year.

"The alarming rise of pesticide-related incidents attributed to pyrethrin and pyrethroid affiliated products is a serious concern for the millions of households that use them," said Center Executive Director Bill Buzenberg.  "The Center for Public Integrity uncovered this public safety issue through more than a dozen Freedom of Information Act requests and crunching the data. This should be basic public information if the EPA were doing its job."

Data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers reveals a similar trend that supports the EPA data analyzed by the Center. The number of reported pyrethrin and pyrethroid incidents to poison centers across the country jumped from 16,000 in 1998 to more than 26,000 in 2006, a 63 percent rise.

Pyrethrins, naturally-occurring compounds with insecticidal properties derived from chrysanthemum flowers, are used in commonly available household products to control insects in the home, on pets, and on people. Their synthetic counterparts, pyrethroids, have similar properties to pyrethrins, and were created as safer alternatives to an earlier class of pesticides (organophosphates), originally derived from nerve gas. Manufacturers’ use of pyrethroids has grown widely to include thousands of household products, ranging from bug repellants, anti-lice shampoos, pet shampoos, and carpet cleaners.

While pyrethroids are generally believed to be less toxic than organophosphates, the number of reported human health problems, including severe reactions and even deaths attributed to pesticides containing pyrethrins and pyrethroids, increased from 261 in 1998 to 1,030 in 2007, nearly a 300 percent increase. Pyrethrins and pyrethroids accounted for more incidents than any other class of pesticide over the last five years. EPA data shows at least 50 deaths attributed to this supposedly safer class of pesticides since 1992.

While organophosphates have been extensively studied and their impact on public health thoroughly documented, researchers and scientists are still unsure of the long-term neurotoxicity of pyrethrins and pyrethroids, particularly among children and those susceptible to allergies. Even so, the EPA does not require product warning labels cautioning consumers with allergies of the dangers associated with pyrethrins and pyrethroids products. However, the Food and Drug Administration does require warning labels on shampoos that contain pyrethrins and pyrethroids.

The Center’s investigation includes an online nationwide pesticide incident database that allows anyone to search by state, city, exposure type, chemical, and product.

The Center’s work on this and other projects is generously supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Ford Foundation, the JEHT Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Park Foundation, the Popplestone Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Wallace Global Fund. This project would not be possible without the generosity of these and numerous other individuals and institutions from across the country. http://www.publicintegrity.org/investigations/pesticides

No laughing matter

This sounds so outrageous, it seems like a joke or something out of "The Onion."

Attorney General Michael Mukasey is demanding that Congress issue a new declaration of war so that anyone that this president or the next one declares to be an "enemy combatant" can be held indefinitely without a trial.

The new declaration of war would make the entire globe — including the United States itself — a “battlefield” where the president decides who will be locked up forever.

With only four weeks left in the Congressional schedule and only six months left in the Bush presidency, Mukasey’s ridiculous power grab should be laughed out of town. But given this Congress’ track record, the Mukasey proposal is no laughing matter. Especially because it also includes a cover-up of the Bush administration’s systemic torture and abuse of detainees.

We can’t take for granted that Congress will reject this outrageous proposal. We have to meet it with an immediate wall of protest that says to Congress: “Don’t you dare.”

I just told my members of Congress to reject the dangerous Bush/Mukasey plan. You can do the same thing here:

Incident Diabetes and Pesticide Exposure among Licensed Pesticide Applicators: Agricultural Health Study, 1993–2003

Exposure to certain environmental toxicants may be associated with increased risk of developing diabetes.

The authors' aim was to investigate the relation between lifetime exposure to specific
agricultural pesticides and diabetes incidence among pesticide applicators. The study included 33,457 licensed applicators, predominantly non-Hispanic White males, enrolled in the Agricultural Health Study. Incident diabetes was self-reported in a 5-year follow-up interview (1999–2003), giving 1,176 diabetics and 30,611 nondiabetics for analysis. Lifetime exposure to pesticides and covariate information were reported by participants at enrollment (1993–1997).

Using logistic regression, the authors considered two primary measures of pesticide exposure: ever use and cumulative lifetime days of use.

They found seven specific pesticides (aldrin, chlordane, heptachlor, dichlorvos, trichlorfon, alachlor, and cyanazine) for which the odds of diabetes incidence increased with both ever use and cumulative days of use. Applicators who had used the organochlorine insecticides aldrin, chlordane, and heptachlor more than 100 lifetime days had 51%, 63%, and 94% increased odds of diabetes, respectively. The observed association
of organochlorine and organophosphate insecticides with diabetes is consistent with
results from previous human and animal studies. Long-term exposure from handling certain pesticides, in particular, organochlorine and organophosphate insecticides, may be associated with increased risk of diabetes.

Union of Concerned Scientists - Citizens and Scientists for Environmental Solutions - www.ucsusa.org

Protecting Government Science - Scientific Freedom and the Public Good

The pursuit of science in an open society has played a large role in the policies that keep us safe and healthy and protect our environment. In recent years, however, the manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal government science has misinformed the public and led to poor policy decisions.

On February 14, 2008, a group of prominent scientists called on the U.S. government to establish conditions that would enable federal scientists to produce the scientific knowledge that is needed by a government dedicated to the public good. In an accompanying report, UCS details specific steps that Congress and the administration can take to restore scientific integrity to federal policy making. The report also explores how science has been misused, with a special focus on systemic changes that hamper federal scientific capacity and make it more difficult for federal agencies like the EPA, FDA, and CDC to fulfill their missions.

The next president and Congress will face increasingly complex scientific and technical challenges. They have an historic opportunity codify the scientific freedoms needed for federal science to flourish. We are working to give them the tools to make this a reality.
Scientific knowledge and its successful applications have played a large role in making the United States of America a powerful nation and its citizens increasingly prosperous and healthy. The challenges that face the United States in the twenty-first century can only be met if this tradition is honored and sustained.

To that end, the U.S. government must adhere to high standards of scientific integrity in forming and implementing its policies. Breaches of this principle have damaged the public good and the international leadership of the United States. To meet its obligation to serve the public interest, the government must have reliable scientific work and advice at its disposal, and provide the public with reliable scientific information. This requires the government to provide federal scientists with the resources and the professional environment necessary to carry out their missions effectively and honestly. The government should also draw on the knowledge of federal scientists and of the larger scientific community to formulate public policy in an objective and transparent manner.
Scientists employed by government institutions commit themselves to serve the public good free from undisclosed conflicts of interest and to carry out science that is reliable and useful, while respecting statutory limitations such as national security laws.

Therefore, government scientists should, without fear of reprisal or retaliation, have the freedom:

to conduct their work without political or private-sector interference;
to candidly communicate their findings to Congress, the public, and their scientific peers;
to publish their work and to participate fully in the scientific community;
to disclose misrepresentation, censorship, and other abuses of science; and
to have their technical work evaluated by scientific peers.

We call on Congress and the executive branch to codify these freedoms, to establish stronger means for gathering scientific advice, and to take concrete steps to enhance transparency, so as to create conditions conducive to a thriving scientific enterprise that will serve our democracy with integrity and bring the full fruits of science to all Americans and to the world.

How to kill pests without killing yourself or the earth......

There are about 50 to 60 million insect species on earth - we have named only about 1 million and there are only about 1 thousand pest species - already over 50% of these thousand pests are already resistant to our volatile, dangerous, synthetic pesticide POISONS. We accidentally lose about 25,000 to 100,000 species of insects, plants and animals every year due to "man's footprint". But, after poisoning the entire world and contaminating every living thing for over 60 years with these dangerous and ineffective pesticide POISONS we have not even controlled much less eliminated even one pest species and every year we use/misuse more and more pesticide POISONS to try to "keep up"! Even with all of this expensive and unnecessary pollution - we lose more and more crops and lives to these thousand pests every year.

We are losing the war against these thousand pests mainly because we insist on using only synthetic pesticide POISONS and fertilizers There has been a severe "knowledge drought" - a worldwide decline in agricultural R&D, especially in production research and safe, more effective pest control since the advent of synthetic pesticide POISONS and fertilizers. Today we are like lemmings running to the sea insisting that is the "right way". The greatest challenge facing humanity this century is the necessity for us to double our global food production with less land, less water, less nutrients, less science, frequent droughts, more and more contamination and ever-increasing pest damage.

National Poison Prevention Week, March 18-24,2007 was created to highlight the dangers of poisoning and how to prevent it. One study shows that about 70,000 children in the USA were involved in common household pesticide-related (acute) poisonings or exposures in 2004. At least two peer-reviewed studies have described associations between autism rates and pesticides (D'Amelio et al 2005; Roberts EM et al 2007 in EHP).  It is estimated that 300,000 farm workers suffer acute pesticide poisoning each year just in the United States - No one is checking chronic contamination.

In order to try to help "stem the tide", I have just finished re-writing my IPM encyclopedia entitled: THE BEST CONTROL II, that contains over 2,800 safe and far more effective alternatives to pesticide POISONS. This latest copyrighted work is about 1,800 pages in length and is now being updated at my new website at http://www.thebestcontrol2.com .

This new website at http://www.thebestcontrol2.com has been basically updated; all we have left to update is Chapter 39 and to renumber the pages. All of these copyrighted items are free for you to read and/or download. There is simply no need to POISON yourself or your family or to have any pest problems.

Herbicide residue in fertilizer destroys British crops

The UK’s Pesticides Safety Directorate is warning gardeners across the UK against consuming vegetables that may have been grown in manure containing residue of a popular Dow chemical herbicide called aminopyralid. Many concerned small-plot farmers contacted the Royal Horticultural Society after noticing grossly deformed crops such as potatoes, beans, peas, carrots and salad vegetables.
The sources of contamination are most likely larger farms off-loading manure from animals that grazed on grasses treated with aminopyralid. This ingredient is also used in the US as a rangeland and pasture herbicide to control woody weeds such as thistle, nettle, and ragweed and is not licensed f or use on food crops. Even though farmers are further warned on the product’s label not to sell manure that could be contaminated with aminopyralid, there is no way of regulating its introduction into the food chain, as has happened in the UK. In fact, some of the farmers who sold the contaminated manure had purchased the aminopyralid-laced feed hay from other farms.
Dow's UK grassland marketing manager Colin Bowers confirmed that links have been established between their products and the malformed produce. “It is undoubtedly a problem,” he says. “And I have got full sympathy for everyone who is involved with this.”
Dow’s response is to step up marketing campaigns stressing the “correct” use of the product and reiterating that manure from aminopyralid treated feed should not be sold as fertilizer. As an additional measure, both Dow and the Royal Horticultural Society advise that soil contaminated by the aminopyralid-laced manure should not be replanted for at least a year.
Sue Ainsworth, 58, an education consultant, said her garden in Hale, Cheshire had been ravaged by the contaminated manure. “We first noticed with the potatoes. As they came through, they were deformed, all curled over and rotten underneath. But the worry is that the [zucchinis] also planted on the manure are fine - but are they safe to eat? This must have affected thousands of people. I am really worried about this product and really think it should be withdrawn.'
Bryn Pugh, a consultant with the National Society of Allotments and Leisure Gardeners, agrees. “It seems to be everywhere. From what I know, it is endemic throughout England and Wales. We will be pressing the government to ban this product,' he said.
At the time of this article, there have been no warnings to American gardeners, but hopefully this incident will suggest that broader testing of how chemicals affect all links in our food chain is badly needed.

Congress to Vote on New Impeachment Resolution -- Take Action

Congratulations to the tens of thousands of people who have been forcing Congress to take up the impeachment issue. The situation is rapidly changing mainly because of pressure from this nation-wide grassroots movement. There is not a second to lose.

Breaking News. This from the desk of Florida Congressman Robert Wexler, one of the co-sponsors of the 35 articles of impeachment introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich:

“Capitol Hill is buzzing today with major developments regarding our campaign for impeachment hearings for President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Just today, in what could be described as a perfect impeachment storm:

"After stating unequivocally that impeachment "is off the table," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated to CBS News today that the House Judiciary Committee should address the issues that Rep. Kucinich's has raised in his impeachment resolution.... This issue now reaches far beyond the substance of the Judiciary Committee's original inquiry regarding the firing of US Attorneys for political purposes. The crisis at hand relates to our most fundamental laws and of our Constitution. It is, in many ways, more serious than the Constitutional crisis surrounding Watergate."

Nancy Pelosi’s comments reflect the growing pressure of impeachment supporters on all elected officials and the heat from Cindy Sheehan’s courageous campaign to unseat her in the coming November elections. Cindy has made the impeachment of Bush, and Pelosi’s previous refusal to allow impeachment to proceed, a centerpiece of her campaign.

Send an email today to support new impeachment resolution

Congress may vote by Tuesday, July 15, on another impeachment resolution offered by Rep. Dennis Kucinich on July 10, 2008. This is a separate resolution from the 35-Articles of Impeachment that was introduced on June 9, 2008.

The new resolution is a single article of impeachment that accuses Bush of lying to Congress about Iraq’s so-called Weapons of Mass Destruction in order to obtain Congressional Authorization for the use of military force against Iraq. Congress passed the authorization in October 2002 and Bush then used it to launch an unprovoked war of aggression and subsequent occupation of Iraq.

You can read the new impeachment resolution by clicking this link.

Take a moment today to let your member of Congress know that you want them to support this impeachment resolution. It is easy and only takes a few seconds of your time by using the mechanism that ImpeachBush.org has created. Click here to send a letter.

When faith is frayed

Blows to the banking system are raising unsettling questions in an already turbulent economy. Tom Petruno - Market Beat - July 12, 2008

In a modern financial system, nothing is more frightening than a run on the bank.

The U.S. now has suffered through a series of them, and they are escalating in size and scope -- posing a serious threat to the already reeling economy.

On Friday, rumors swamped financial markets that the federal government would be forced to step in to aid mortgage-finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which together own or guarantee $5 trillion in U.S. home loans.

In Wall Street's version of a bank run, investors drove shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to 17-year lows, signaling a gnawing lack of faith in the companies' ability to survive rising mortgage defaults without government help.

Later in the day, regulators took over IndyMac Bank of Pasadena, saying the $32-billion lender had collapsed under the weight of bad home loans and withdrawals by spooked depositors. It was the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history.

Friday's events were felt around the world, knocking the battered U.S. dollar lower and driving up interest rates.

"This is a flare-up in the financial forest fire that is far beyond anything we've seen before," said Christopher Low, chief economist at investment firm FTN Financial in New York.

And it is triggering worries that would have been unthinkable even a year ago -- including that the U.S. Treasury's debt might lose its AAA credit grade because of heavy blows to the nation's fiscal health from the housing mess.

Just four months ago, many on Wall Street believed they had seen the worst of the credit crisis rooted in the housing market's woes. The collapse in March of brokerage Bear Stearns Cos., a key player in the business of packaging dicey mortgages for sale to investors, was the kind of high-profile calamity that historically has marked the end of financial crises.

Bear Stearns, too, was a victim of a devastating run on the bank, as many of its creditors suddenly stopped lending to the firm and investors dumped the company's stock.

Reacting quickly, the Federal Reserve took unprecedented steps after Bear Stearns' demise to make cheap loans available to loss-ridden banks and, for the first time, to securities firms. The Fed's moves helped restore calm to markets by April.

But by May, investors' focus had returned to the slumping housing market and the likelihood that banks and brokerages would face more losses on mortgage-related debt. Confidence in the stock market, and in financial institutions large and small, eroded anew.

Worse, the price of oil began a stunning climb in April that still hasn't relented. Crude prices closed at $145.08 a barrel Friday, up from $100 as April began.

Record energy costs, coupled with surging food prices, raise the risk that more beleaguered consumers could fall behind on their mortgage payments.

"These prices for oil and food, in an economy 70% driven by consumers, are just adding more strains to the financial system," said Tom Atteberry, a fund manager at First Pacific Advisors in Los Angeles.

As worries about the economy mounted in June, stocks went into another tailspin that has continued in July. Wall Street now is officially in a bear market -- meaning a drop of at least 20% in key stock indexes -- for the first time since the plunge of 2000-02.

The Dow Jones index, which fell 128.48 points to 11,100.54 on Friday, now is down 21.6% from its record high last year.

That's still a long way from the 38% dive the Dow took from its peak in early 2000 to its low in October 2002.

But there are some parallels between the 2000-02 period and the current one that hint at worse to come.

The stock market's crash in 2000 began with the bust in highflying dot-com stocks. This time, the decline began with the bust in home prices and its disastrous effects on every industry tied to housing.

In 2002, weary investors were hit by a wave of corporate accounting scandals that began with fabled Enron Corp. By the summer of that year, an extraordinary crisis of confidence had developed: Investors simply felt that they couldn't trust what many companies were telling them about their sales or earnings. Share prices dived further.

This time, the crisis of confidence is in the U.S. banking system. Because so many banks and brokerages lent heavily to fund the housing boom, the losses from the housing bust permeate the financial system to a degree few analysts had predicted.

As home prices keep falling, "anything tied to U.S. residential real estate is seen at risk," said Allen Sinai at Decision Economics in New York.

Fearing more severe losses than they've already suffered, investors in recent weeks have fled stocks of some of the nation's biggest financial institutions at a pace that has stunned Wall Street.

This week, investors turned on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with a vengeance.

Despite the companies' assurances that they have adequate capital cushions against surging defaults on the mortgages they own or guarantee, the market doesn't believe them.

For the federal government, that poses a quandary. Because of their size and importance to the mortgage market, it's inconceivable that Fannie and Freddie would be allowed to fail. But an outright takeover of the companies by the government, as some experts have suggested, could frighten foreign investors -- who are big lenders to the Treasury -- by, in effect, adding the companies' $5-trillion debt load to the Treasury's massive debt of $9.5 trillion.

Nationalizing the companies "would put the full faith and credit of the Treasury at risk," Sinai said. "It would make foreign investors think hard about buying U.S. Treasury debt."

The way you stop a bank run is to restore confidence. For Uncle Sam, the challenge isn't just to restore confidence among Americans, but also to make sure it doesn't evaporate among our foreign creditors.

Pesticide Contamination Lingers Through Multiple Generations

In the research that was done by reproductive neuroendocrinologist Andrea Gore and evolutionary biologist David Crews, sexual behavior was monitored in two sets of rats. The first set were healthy while the second set were descendants of rats that had been given hormone-disrupting chemicals. The second group of rats who were great grand-mothers of the test rats, were then injected with the fungicide vinclozolon which is favored amongst grape growers.

In previous research, it had been discovered that male rats given vinclozolin developed various reproductive and other difficulties later in life, including sperm deficiencies, infertility, breast tumors and kidney disease.

NaturalNews - http://www.naturalnews.com/023474.html  reported that in this study, the rats chosen were between 90 and 120 years old, and were evenly divided between the genders. The male and female rats were separated by a wired mesh and were timed as to how long each rat was interested in the opposite sex. This was an indication of sexual interest.

Oddly, there was no difference in how the female rats were treated by the males, regardless of whether they were healthy or were descendants of injected rats. However, females were less interested in the males that were descendants of injected rats. The females interest was greater with the healthy (or 'controlled') rats.

In the females, the researchers couldn't find any apparent health or fertility problems, even though the females were descendants of injected rats. They now believe that some chemicals do not damage DNA, but rather reprogram or silence genes which could lead the genes to work abnormally. Even though this change could be longer lasting, it's believe that it can be bred out by the mating with healthy animals.

Because the reproductive developmental processes of mammals are all incredibly similar to each other, the researchers believe that similar effects probably occur in humans exposed to toxic chemicals as well.

The Ideal Pesticide - THE BEST CONTROL IS A PESTISAFE® ! Safe, Non-Toxic approach to Pest Management. By Stephen L. Tvedten

The 5th Edition of Truman’s Scientific Guide to Pest Control Operations described the 'Perfect' or 'Ideal' pesticide as:

"Ideally any pesticide will act rapidly on pests, yet be completely harmless to people, domestic animals, wildlife, and other aspects of the environment. Its residues would only last as long as was necessary to create the desired effect, usually for very short periods. It would also be inexpensive and readily available in necessary quantities, chemically stable (before application), non-flammable, and otherwise safe to use around homes or industrial sites. It would be easily prepared and applied, non-corrosive and non-staining, and it would have no undesirable odor. Unfortunately, no such (synthetic) pesticide exists." [Excerpt taken from: Pest Control Magazine, 1997]

The above study was conducted by: Purdue University and Advanstar Communications Note: Purdue University and Advanstar Communications (Pest Control Magazine) worked on this 1997 Pest Control Manual, but they were, obviously, still unaware I had begun patenting and using and field testing the ideal or perfect (pesticide) or Pestisafe® based on natural pest control ideas.

In addition to being on the (perfect or ideal pesticide poison descriptive) list, enzyme and surfactant products, e.g., Lice R Gone®, will never create any pest resistance problems and is truly the "perfect or ideal pesticide" as the entire compound contains only ingredients that are considered to be food-grade or non-toxic or GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) and all of these ingredients are active only as long as they are liquid and can be used virtually everywhere, even when people are sick, under 1, over 60, pregnant and/or chemically sensitive to control even pesticide-resistant pests. Most insects die in about 16 seconds; ticks take about 2 minutes to be safely and effectively destroyed. In addition this patented process of using enzymes and surfactants to control pest problems can be diluted/applied in such a way that only the pest species are killed leaving the beneficial species alive!

Part of the science behind the invention and/or patented process is that maggots naturally produce enzymes to help soften up their food so they can eat it. Insectivore plants naturally produce and also use protease enzymes to digest their insect prey. Spiders and scorpions naturally produce and inject protease enzymes to predigest their prey and all molting insects produce a small amount of protease enzyme to serve as a chemical "zipper" so they can split open the back of their exoskeletons when they molt and emerge in order to increase their size. Without this protease enzyme all molting insects would be trapped inside their own exoskeletons and be crushed to death by their own growth. Therefore, there is no possibility that any insect or arachnid pests can ever develop a resistance to my Australian and USA patented process with 77 approved claims of using enzymes/surfactants to control pest problems in just the original patents

Every day I receive many letters and/or emails from all over the world asking me how to safely control a particular pest problem without killing or harming the pets and the people. Rather than trying to answer them all individually, I have posted a lot of free pest control alternatives and other relevant information on the website located at: http://www.thebestcontrol.com/bugstop/ . There is a free 86 page booklet on how to control most pest problems without using any pesticide POISONS entitled: THE BUG STOPS HERE. There is also a free IPM manual/encyclopedia entitled: THE BEST CONTROL II available at http://www.thebestcontrol2.com . All of these copyrighted items are free for you to simply read and/or download. All that I ask is that you note where you got this information.

VIEW U. S. PATENT #6663860 http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6,663,860.WKU.&OS=PN/6,663,860&RS=PN/6,663,860

This article refers just to the U.S. Patented Process # 6663860 owned by Stephen L. Tvedten, which has 77 claims on the process of using various formulas and compositions of Protease Enzyme & Surfactants to control a broad array of pests such as insects, arachnids, bacteria, viruses, and mold. While in its liquid state, the enzyme compound is active and can be used to safely control bugs without the use of pesticide. The entire enzyme surfactant compound basically contains only ingredients that are considered to be non-toxic, food-grade or GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe), so it can be used around people ranging from infants to elderly, pregnant, ill or chemically sensitive. The Patent allows for an unlimited amount of safer and far more effective alternatives to pesticides and herbicides.

In addition to US Patent # 6663860 - I was notified on June 20,2008 that the US Patent and Trademark Office will issue me another US Patent # 7,393,528 on my already patented enzyme/surfactant process on July 1, 2008.

Background of the Pestisafe® Invention

Pesticides present risks to human health. Although the rate of post-application degradation may vary widely, almost all pesticides present some direct risk to human health through residual toxicity, i.e. direct human contact with pesticide residues remaining after treatment, whether through inhalation of volatile toxic vapors, skin contact and transdermal absorption, or ingestion. In addition, many pesticides present indirect risks to human health in the form of environmental pollution, most notably pollution with persistent, halide-substituted organics which accumulate in the fat stores of food fish and other animals. These problems have led to complete bans on the use of some pesticides (e.g., DDT, chlordane, heptachlor, aldrin, and dieldrin); while the continued use of the remaining pesticides has produced a new problem: the increasing development of widespread resistance to pesticides in insects.

This resistance yields two results: 1) quick reinfestation by the pest insect; 2) the need and cost of continually engineering new pesticides (e.g., synthetic pyrethroids were developed because of resistance to the less toxic first generation pyrethrins). New pesticide production takes time and the new pesticides that result are almost universally more expensive than those they replace.

In this context, traditional pesticides are applied on a regular, and typically increasing, basis. For example, many schools have come to be sprayed monthly or even biweekly, and with increasing quantities of pesticides to combat endemic roach re-infestations, often to no avail. This intensifies the problem of residual toxicity to people, especially to children who, as a result, may suffer headaches, grogginess, nausea, dizziness, irritability, frenetic behavior, and an impaired readiness to learn.

Because of these effects, it has been recognized that totally new approaches must be discovered and implemented in order to effectively control invertebrate pests without destroying human health and the environment. There is a need for a quick-acting, effective, residually non-toxic method for combating insect, arachnid, and other pests which may be used as a replacement for traditional pesticide treatments and as a supplement to the arsenal of currently available IPM techniques.

Summary Of The Invention

Consequently, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for combating invertebrate (i.e. insect and arachnid) and microbe (i.e. bacterial, algal, fungal, and/or viral) pests which is quick-acting, effective, and residually non-toxic and which may be used as a replacement for traditional pesticide treatments and as a supplement to the arsenal of currently available integrated pest management techniques.

It has been surprisingly found that the application of a composition comprising at least one protease enzyme is a method for exterminating pests which achieves these objectives. The enzyme component of the invention may comprise a single protease or a protease-containing mixture of enzymes, whether natural, preformed, or synthetic. In an alternate embodiment, the composition may also comprise a detergent component. This detergent component comprises one or more surfactant(s), detergent builder(s), or mixtures thereof.

Description of the Invention

Part of the science behind how Protease enzyme works as a natural pest control agent is that all insects undergo a molting cycle in which they naturally produce a small amount of Protease enzyme to create a chemical "zipper" that splits open a seam in their exoskeletons so they can emerge from their shell and grow larger. Without this vital Protease enzyme, insects would be trapped inside their own exoskeletons and be crushed to death by their own growth. There is no possibility that insects or arachnids can ever develop a resistance to Protease enzyme as a physical control agent because their very existence depends on it!. Indeed, enzymes play many vital roles throughout the insect kingdom.  Maggots naturally produce enzymes to help soften up food for digestion. Spiders and scorpions inject their prey with enzyme and allowing it to predigest the victim. Insectivore plants such as the Venus fly trap also use enzymes to digest insects. Even pests like bacteria and mold naturally use enzymes to break down dead organic material on a cellular level.

In The Best Control II IPM encyclopedia - I outline how through my many years of pest control field research, I have continually proven that Enzyme-based compositions are the safest and fastest knock-down "pesticides"available on the pest control market today. Most insects die in about sixteen seconds when exposed to Protease enzyme and a surfactant blend. Ticks and spiders are arachnids, and have stronger outer shells than arthropods, so they require about two minutes to be destroyed. The dilution rate of the enzyme and surfactant blend can be calibrated to remove only chosen insects such as aphids, but weak enough to protect beneficial insects such as honey bees and lady bug beetles.

Pest Control has long sought a 'Holy Grail' idyllic pesticide; one that is totally safe for humans, yet certain death to insects, and would never become obsolete. This 'Perfect' pesticide would be not only be non-toxic but permanent too. But,the "industry" continues to only use/misuse various synthetic toxins. Sadly, humans do not have the biological tolerance to synthetic pesticides that insects do. But conversely, most insects and arachnids do not have a biological tolerance to my safe and far more effective protease enzyme and surfactant biopesticide formulations, such as Lice R Gone®.

The Pest Problem and the Safe Solution

There are about 50 to 60 million insect species on earth - we have named only about 1 million and there are only about 1 thousand pest species - already over 50% of these thousand pests are already resistant to our volatile, dangerous, synthetic pesticide POISONS. We accidentally lose about 25,000 to 100,000 species of insects, plants and animals every year due to "man's footprint". But, after poisoning the entire world and contaminating every living thing for over 60 years with these dangerous and ineffective pesticide POISONS the POISON "industry" has never even controlled much less eliminated even one pest species and every year "they" use/misuse more and more pesticide POISONS to try to "keep up"!  Even with all of this unnecessary expensive and dangerous pollution - we lose more and more crops and lives to these thousand pests every year.

We are losing the war against these thousand pests mainly because the POISON "industry" insists on using only synthetic pesticide POISONS and fertilizers. There has been a severe "knowledge drought" - a worldwide decline in agricultural R&D, especially in production research and safe, more effective pest control alternatives since the advent of synthetic pesticide POISONS and fertilizers.

It truly is time for a change to safe and far more effective alternatives to dangerous pesticide POISONS. See Safe Solutions, Inc. for safe and far more effective alternatives. http://www.safesolutionsinc.com

Note: I will write about US Patent # 7,393,528 as soon as it is officially issued.

Greenpeace publishes pesticides industry ranking
Bayer pesticides are most damaging for humans and the environment

Brussels/Hamburg –  Pesticides manufactured by German chemical multinational Bayer  pose  the  biggest  threat  to  human  health and the environment, compared to other international producers, Greenpeace found in a  report  it published today. Syngenta (Switzerland), Monsanto (USA), BASF (Germany)  and  Dow  Chemical  (USA)  are the next to follow on the company black list.

The   Greenpeace   report,   “The   Dirty   Portfolios  of  the  Pesticides Industry”,(1)  provides  the  first-ever  ranking  of  the  world’s leading agrochemical  companies  based on the hazards and risks of their pesticides on  human  health  and the environment. The multinationals together account for  75  percent  of  the  world market, and 243 (or 46 percent) of the 512 pesticides  they  sell  worldwide are particularly hazardous for humans and for nature. The European Union is currently negotiating new legislation for the authorisation of pesticides.

“Our  ranking  shows  how  toxic  the  business of the leading agrochemical companies  still  is,”  said  Greenpeace chemicals expert Manfred Krautter. “Politicians  must  now  tighten up EU pesticide laws to protect our health and  to  preserve  biodiversity.  Pesticides  that  can cause cancer, alter genes,  and  damage  the  reproductive, endocrine or nervous system must no longer  be  authorised.  Pesticides  that  harm  bees  or  life  in aquatic environments  must  be banned from the market. The chemical industry is now using  its  significant  lobbying power to try to secure authorisation even for toxins like these.”

On average, 46 percent of the multinationals’ pesticide portfolios are made up  of  particularly  dangerous  substances.  In terms of environmental and health   protection,  another  worrying  aspect  is  that  only  inadequate information  is  available in public databases concerning the toxic effects of  another  16  percent  of  the  pesticide  components.  Even the best EU laboratories  are  unable  to  routinely  detect the residues in food of 42 percent of pesticides on the market.

“Pesticides  are  in the environment, in the food we eat and in our bodies. They  are  like  a  time  bomb,  threatening our health and many endangered animal and plant species,” Krautter said.

US  company  Monsanto  has  the  portfolio  with the highest proportion (60 percent)  of  pesticides  that  are  particularly  toxic  to humans and the environment.  However,  Monsanto  only ends up in the middle of the overall ranking  due to its small share of the market. The overall ranking not only takes  into account the hazardous properties of the various pesticides, but also the quantities that are sold worldwide.

Notes to the editor:
(1) The report can be found at www.greenpeace.eu. The ranking draws on data from  the  Greenpeace  studies  “Black  List  of Pesticides” and “Limits of Pesticide  Analysis”  published  in  January  and  February  2008. All five companies   declined  to  supply  Greenpeace  with  information  about  the pesticidal substances that they sell.
(2)  The  European  Commission put forward a proposal on new regulation for the  authorisation  of  pesticides  in  2007  and  the  European Parliament proposed  a series of amendments to strengthen legislation in October 2007. EU  agriculture  ministers are due to meet on 23 June to attempt to reach a common position on the proposal.

IRAQ:
'Special Weapons' Have a Fallout on Babies

by Ali al-Fadhily and Dahr Jamail*

FALLUJAH, Jun 12 (IPS) - Babies born in Fallujah are showing illnesses and deformities on a scale never seen before, doctors and residents say.

The new cases, and the number of deaths among children, have risen after "special weaponry" was used in the two massive bombing campaigns in Fallujah in 2004.

After denying it at first, the Pentagon admitted in November 2005 that white phosphorous, a restricted incendiary weapon, was used a year earlier in Fallujah.

In addition, depleted uranium (DU) munitions, which contain low-level radioactive waste, were used heavily in Fallujah. The Pentagon admits to having used 1,200 tonnes of DU in Iraq thus far.

Many doctors believe DU to be the cause of a severe increase in the incidence of cancer in Iraq, as well as among U.S. veterans who served in the 1991 Gulf War and through the current occupation.

"We saw all the colours of the rainbow coming out of the exploding American shells and missiles," Ali Sarhan, a 50-year-old teacher who lived through the two U.S. sieges of 2004 told IPS. "I saw bodies that turned into bones and coal right after they were exposed to bombs that we learned later to be phosphorus.

"The most worrying is that many of our women have suffered loss of their babies, and some had babies born with deformations."

"I had two children who had brain damage from birth," 28-year-old Hayfa' Shukur told IPS. "My husband has been detained by the Americans since November 2004 and so I had to take the children around by myself to hospitals and private clinics. They died. I spent all our savings and borrowed a considerable amount of money."

Shukur said doctors told her that it was use of the restricted weapons that caused her children's brain damage and subsequent deaths, "but none of them had the courage to give me a written report."

"Many babies were born with major congenital malformations," a paediatric doctor, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IPS. "These infants include many with heart defects, cleft lip or palate, Down's syndrome, and limb defects."

The doctor added, "I can say all kinds of problems related to toxic pollution took place in Fallujah after the November 2004 massacre."

Many doctors speak of similar cases and a similar pattern. The indications remain anecdotal, in the absence of either a study, or any available official records.

The Fallujah General Hospital administration was unwilling to give any statistics on deformed babies, but one doctor volunteered to speak on condition of anonymity -- for fear of reprisals if seen to be critical of the administration.

"Maternal exposure to toxins and radioactive material can lead to miscarriage and frequent abortions, still birth, and congenital malformation," the doctor told IPS. There have been many such cases, and the government "did not move to contain the damage, or present any assistance to the hospital whatsoever.

"These cases need intensive international efforts that provide the highest and most recent technologies that we will not have here in a hundred years," he added.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed concern Mar. 31 about the lack of medical supplies in hospitals in Baghdad and Basra.

"Hospitals have used up stocks of vital medical items, and require further supplies to cope with the influx of wounded patients. Access to water remains a matter of concern in certain areas," the ICRC said in a statement.

A senior Iraqi health ministry official was quoted as saying Feb. 26 that the health sector is under "great pressure", with scores of doctors killed, an exodus of medical personnel, poor medical infrastructure, and shortage of medicines.

"We are experiencing a big shortage of everything," said the official, "We don't have enough specialist doctors and medicines, and most of the medical equipment is outdated.

"We used to get many spinal and head injures, but were unable to do anything as we didn't have enough specialists and medicines," he added. "Intravenous fluid, which is a simple thing, is not available all the time." He said no new hospitals had been built since 1986.

Iraqi Health Minister Salih al-Hassnawi highlighted the shortage of medicines at a press conference in Arbil in the Kurdistan region in the north Feb. 22. "The Iraqi Health Ministry is suffering from an acute shortage of medicines...We have decided to import medicines immediately to meet the needs."

He said the 2008 health budget meant that total expenditure on medicines, medical equipment and ambulances would amount to an average of 22 dollars per citizen.

But this is too late for the unknown number of babies and their families who bore the consequences of the earlier devastation. And it is too little to cover the special needs of babies who survived with deformations.

Termites Take A Bite Out Of Budget By The Beachwood Bait Station Affairs Desk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Newsandexperts.com

Glendora, CA - Drywood termite swarming season is about to begin and homeowners everywhere are preparing to open their wallets to protect their houses from structural damage.

"I have seen termite swarm eruptions in grocery store parking lots, the middle of a huge lawn and of course in nearly 18,000 homes," says Michael Allen, owner of Century Termite Control and author of the new book Top Secrets of the Termite Industry; What Termite Companies Don't Want You to Know, That You Should Know.

The cost of tenting an American home to get rid of termites ranges from $1,300 to over $3,000 depending on the size of the home and the pest control company you choose. Allen says if homeowners know what signs to look for they shouldn't have to pay a penny to professionals.

"These chemical companies are multi-million dollar machines. They push their products to pest control companies which are supposed to push it to homeowners. The price keeps going up and there is just no reason for it. Termite companies aren't helping homeowners do anything they can't do by themselves."

On his website, http://www.centurytermitesolutions.com, Allen has a list of the top 10 things you need to know about protecting your home from termites. Here are four of them:

1. Stop the Pheromones and You've Stopped the Termites. All termites line the tunnels they dig with pheromones, a scent that the bugs follow to get to and from your home. It's a way of communicating to the other termites to follow the scent and find food. "All you need to do is break that line of pheromones with store-bought orange oil or a home-made mixture and the termites won't know how to get to your house anymore. It will be as if they've lost the map and put up an electric fence."

2. The North Side Of Your Home Is Especially Vulnerable. Because the north side of your home gets the least amount of sun, more moisture can accumulate in the wood (cellulose), softening it up for the termites to eat. Try to keep the north side as dry as possible by turning away sprinklers and trimming back trees and overgrown vegetation that are blocking the sun. Other than swarming these insects never leave the infected wood for water. They rely only on the trapped moisture in the cellulose for a complete life cycle.

3. Decorative Finishes Create Easy Access Points For Termites. Termites can enter where the brick or decorative finish material touches the ground. They crawl up between the gaps to get to the wood. This happens at the mudsill line. Get familiar with and measure your home's mudsill line.

4. Bait Stations Lead Termites to Your Home. Many unscrupulous pest control companies recommend putting bait stations in your home. But bait stations don't work. The smell from the bait attracts termites and encourages them to build underground roads and highways close to your home. While some may take the bait and die most of the insects will never get as far as the queen. There are millions of termites in an infected home. Killing even thousands a day will not make a dent. The remaining termites will just wind up feasting on what's close to the bait station - your home. Any pest control company that wants to put a bait station in your house is not as interested in solving your termite problem as they are in forcing you to be a return customer.

"You can pay the pest control guys several thousand dollars," says Allen, "or you can put in a little elbow grease to get rid of the pests by yourself and keep those few thousand dollars in your own bank account!"

Glyphosate - A review of its health and environmental effects

Source: http://www.geocities.com/opaq2001/glyphosate.htm

Glyphosate is the active ingredient of some of the most common herbicides used in farming and gardening such as RoundUp. These products have been promoted as quickly biodegradable and non toxic. People believe that they are so safe that you can drink a cup of these herbicides without any ill effect.  They are not safe, see toxicity heading below.

Consequently, it is sprayed on roadsides while people are driving, on footpaths when people are shopping and in schoolyards and sports fields, exposing children to drift and residues. People buy it from supermarkets or garden shops and use it without any protective clothing because it is deemed 'safe'. It is sprayed in national parks and other environmentally sensitive areas in the belief that it is not toxic and or residual.  I continuously hear Primary Industries officers and other agricultural specialists telling farmers that it is not necessary to wear any protective clothing because it is harmless.
Unfortunately, the facts show that this is not the case. While pure Glyphosate has a low acute toxicity (the amount needed to cause death), when it is sold as a commercial herbicide it is combined with surfactants and other ingredients to make it more effective at killing plants. Studies show that the commercial products, such as Round Up, can be three times more toxic than pure glyphosate.

Toxicity - Health Problems - so safe that you can drink it.
Japanese researchers analysing suicides have found that drinking 3/4 of a cup (200 millilitres) of commercial glyphosate products is fatal.  Survivors (those who consumed less than 3/4 of a cup) suffered a range of severe health problems. These problems included intestinal pain, vomiting, erosion of the gastrointestinal tract, excess fluid in the lungs, pneumonia, lung dysfunction, clouding of consciousness, destruction of red blood cells, abnormal electrocardiograms, low blood pressure, kidney damage and damage to the larynx. It is important to note that damage to the kidneys and the lungs is usually permanent. These body tissues do not repair themselves, instead forming scar tissue that does not function to help filter toxins from the blood or breathe oxygen.  In California, where there is a mandatory system of reporting pesticide poisoning, Glyphosate is the third most common cause of pesticide illness in farm workers. It is the most common form of reported pesticide poisoning in landscape gardeners.  Two separate studies in Sweden have linked exposure to Glyphosate to Hairy Cell Leukemia and Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. These types of cancers were extremely rare, however non-Hodgkins lymphoma is the most rapidly increasing cancer in the Western world. It has risen by 73% in the USA since 1973. Another study has found a higher incidence of Parkinson disease amongst farmers who used herbicides, including glyphosate.  Other studies show that Glyphosate and commercial herbicides containing Glyphosate cause a range of cell mutations and damage to cell DNA. These types of changes are usually regarded as precursors to cancer and birth defects.

Reproductive Effects
Studies show that exposure to Glyphosate is associated with a range of reproductive effects in humans and other species. Research from Ontario, Canada found that a father's exposure to Glyphosate was linked to an increase in miscarriages and premature births in farm families.  Glyphosate caused a decrease in the sperm count of rats and an increase in abnormal and dead sperms in rabbits. Pregnant rabbits exposed to Glyphosate had a decrease in the weight of their babies.

Residual
The proponents of Glyphosate herbicides promote them as environment friendly or benign. They say that they breakdown very quickly in the environment.  The facts show otherwise. A report from The United States Environmental Protection Agency states that Glyphosate is 'extremely persistent under typical application conditions'. It is one of the most residual herbicides, with studies in Sweden showing that one application can last up to 3 years.  In warmer climates, it can take less than a year per application for Glyphosate to degrade. However, when it breaks down it does not disappear into harmless basic elements. It degrades into an even more residual compound called aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). While AMPA has a low acute toxicity, the studies conducted on this compound show that it damages the livers and bladders of rats. Unfortunately, very few long-term health and environmental studies are conducted on the breakdown products of synthetic chemicals.  Residues of Glyphosate have been found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. This is because it readily moves into all parts of a plant. As it is inside the plant tissues, it cannot be washed off.  Residues can be detected long after glyphosate treatments have been made. One study showed that lettuces contained residues five months after the field was treated with glyphosate. The disturbing thing about this research is that the lettuce seedlings were planted four months after the field was sprayed for weeds. The seedlings absorbed the glyphosate from the soil residues.
A World Health Organisation study revealed significant Glyphosate residues in wheat after harvest. Milling did not remove it, as it moves into the plant and the wheat seed. The study showed that cooking does not break down Glyphosate.

Environmental Effects
Glyphosate based herbicides have been shown to cause a significant decline of beneficial insect species in farms. Studies by the International Organization for Biological Control and other researchers have found that between 50 to 80 percent of beneficial insects are killed from exposure to residues of a Glyphosate herbicide.  Glyphosate is very toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms. Concentrations as low as 10 parts per million can kill fish. Daphnia, a very important part of the aquatic food chain, especially for fish, can be killed by as little as three parts per million. This is an important reason why it should not be used near waterways or in drains.  Glyphosate is extremely toxic to the soil life. One application can cause a dramatic plunge in the number of beneficial soil micro-organisms and arthropods. Studies show a reduction in the species that build humus, thus it contributes to the decline in soil organic matter.  Glyphosate significantly reduces the activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. These bacteria transform soil nitrogen into forms that plants can use. Studies of Soybeans grown for nitrogen fixation showed a reduction in the number of rhizobium bacteria and the nitrogen they produce when Glyphosate was used for weed control.  Other studies show that Glyphosate herbicides increase the susceptibility of plants to diseases. This is partly because it reduces the growth of mycorrhizal fungi and other beneficial fungi that help plants absorb nutrients and help fight disease. However, plants suffer more disease, as there is an increase in the soil pathogens and a decrease beneficial species that control diseases after an application of Glyphosate.  Glyphosate exposure damages or reduces the populations of earthworms. A New Zealand study showed that 5% of the usual application rate caused delayed development and increased death in earthworms.  Glyphosate reduces populations of small mammals and birds by damaging the vegetation that provides food and shelter for these animals. The populations of all of these living organisms can take years to recover due to Glyphosate's persistence in the soil.

Spray Drift
Glyphosate spray drift from both ground and aerial applications has been measured from 400 to 800 meters from the target site. Studies have shown that Glyphosate drift will cause more severe and extensive damage than many other herbicides. This is because it is a broad spectrum, non-selective herbicide and it is transported throughout the plant causing damage to the unexposed parts. This damage, when it does not kill the plants, can last for many years.  Drift that is one thousand times less than the usual application rates has been shown to damage surrounding vegetation, including the killing of wild plants. This is an important reason why it should not be used in national parks and environmentally sensitive areas for weed control.

Genetic Engineering
The use of glyphosate is expected to increase substantially in the next few years because several genetically engineered crops are "Roundup Ready" and will be grown by many farmers.  This expected increase in use has resulted in an application for the MRL (residue level) for glyphosate to be increased by 200 percent. This need to increase the permitted residue levels is due to genetically engineered herbicide tolerant crops using more chemicals, not less as the proponents of GMO's claim. These crops cannot be legally sold in Australia under the present residue levels, as the increased number of sprays will mean higher residue levels.  This need for a dramatic increase in residues demonstrates that this herbicide is residual. If it is rapidly degraded and leaves no residues as is commonly claimed, why is there a need for such a large increase on residues on the crop?  The persistent nature of these residues in genetically engineered food crops such as Soybeans, Corn and Canola is another reason why we need mandatory labelling of all GMO's. We need to have the freedom of choice to avoid foods that we believe will contain residues of toxic chemicals.
This is a very good reason for eating organic foods.

Conclusion
Glyphosate is widely used in the mistaken belief that it is harmless, safe and readily breaks down leaving no residues. Consequently, it is sprayed in public areas while people are present and by operators without protective clothing. These people are exposed to the drift of this herbicide. The facts show that Glyphosate causes a range of health problems to humans, plants and animals, it causes environmental problems and that it is highly persistent. It is time that the widespread use of this toxic chemical on roadsides, footpaths, parks, gardens, schools, farms, forestry, national parks etc was stopped or highly restricted.

Drug Companies Are Killing You Legally While Robbing You Blind

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that drug overdoses killed 33,000 people in 2005, second only to car accidents in the category of accidental deaths. In 1999, the number was 20,000, and in 1990, 10,000 died.

(Diseases caused by medical treatment are called iatrogenic diseases. The total number of iatrogenic deaths in the USA for 2001 is estimated to be 783,936. These were due to fatal drug reactions, medical error and unnecessary medical and surgical procedures. With this, the medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. In comparison the 2001 heart disease death rate was 699,697 and the annual cancer death rate 553,251).www.NutritionInstituteOfAmerica.org

As this excellent commentary in Better Body Journal points out, the huge increase in people dying is not because of a heroin or crack epidemic. These deaths are largely due to prescription drugs.

Consider that 46 percent of Americans take at least one prescription pill daily. Are these drugs really solving all your problems? If so, then why is the pharmaceutical industry growing every single year, with some of the biggest profit margins of any industry?

Big Pharma spent $12.7 billion promoting its products in 1998. The amount has vastly increased since that time. Do you ever get the feeling that you're being sold many of these drugs just to make you think that you're sick with something?

A good portion of the drugs that make up the multi-billion dollar industry of pharmaceuticals are simply doing nothing, if not making us worse. For example, a recent study suggests that anti-depressants only work for the severely depressed. If you're not in that category, then you might as well be taking a sugar pill.

In most cases, Americans are taking more drugs than they need. How about stopping the problems before they start? Take a step back and look at your life. Do you actually have problems, or do you only think you have problems because of a drug commercial?

Dr. Mercola's Comments:

Unfortunately most of the population has been brainwashed to take a pill to feel better. I was reminded of this last week when I had to take a treadmill EKG for an insurance physical. The staff was in utter disbelief that I was not on any medications and they questioned me several times on that.

However, it got worse as I set the record for their facility as no one had ever gone as long on the treadmill as I had. A full fifteen minutes. I could have gone much farther and longer but the machine wasn't designed to go any farther on the Bruce Protocol.

There are times when drugs are necessary, but the bottom line is that most of the time they aren't. And when you get into that mindset that you need a drug to cure what ails you, two things happen.

First, and most obviously, you subject your body to another potentially toxic substance.

Second, and this is more on a subconscious level, it reinforces in your mind that your body cannot heal itself. No, you're telling yourself each time you pop a pill, only these drugs can do that. Which, of course, is a lie. But the more you tell yourself that you need drugs to feel good, the more your body will follow suit. Soon you really will need those pills just to feel normal.

And this is an insult to the immense healing power of your body.

Would You Take Cocaine or Heroin?

I'm guessing most of you reading this would not. After all, recreational drugs, including cocaine and heroin, are responsible for an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 U.S. deaths per year.

Well, an estimated 106,000 hospitalized patients die each year from drugs that, by medical standards, are properly prescribed and properly administered, according to an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

And 2 million more suffer serious side effects.

Taking this a step further, consider the medical error and mortality rate of conventional medicine in this light:

1. The recorded error rate of ICU's is like the post office losing more than 16,000 pieces of mail every hour of every day, or banks deducting 32,000 checks from the wrong bank account every hour, 24/7

2. The recorded medical errors and deaths equate to six jumbo jets falling out of the sky each day, 365 days a year

3. Since 2001, a recorded 490,000 people have died from properly prescribed drugs in the United States, while 2,996 people died on U.S. soil from terrorism, all in the 9/11 attacks; prescription drugs are therefore 16,400 percent more dangerous than terrorism.

4. If deaths from over-the-counter drugs are also included, then drug consumption leaps to being 32,000 percent more dangerous than terrorism. And conventional medicine viewed as a whole is 104,700 percent deadlier than terrorism

With these kinds of odds, do you still think it's worth it to take prescription drugs for problems that lifestyle changes can often resolve?

Most Prescription Drugs are Simply Unnecessary

As much as the drug companies want you to believe that it's normal to take medicine every day, it's not. It is the rare exception that you should ever need to take a drug.

Of course, you should work with your health care provider (preferably a holistic-minded one) in determining which ones are really vital, but I can tell you this: if you are suffering from any one of the following common conditions, drugs are not the answer:

   1. Arthritis
   2. High cholesterol
   3. Cognitive decline
   4. Depression
   5. Diabetes
   6. High blood pressure
   7. Osteoporosis

And this is only the tip of the iceberg.

Let's spread the word as far as we can. Relying on drugs will never give you the healthy body and mind you desire. What will give you optimal health is a bit of work on your part, to eat healthy, to exercise, to relieve your stress -- all of the things I detail in Take Control of Your Health.

Already, we are making a difference. The drug cartel is slated to have negative growth in 2011 -- for the first time in history!

So let's keep the momentum going. One of the easiest things you can do is to regularly review this newsletter to keep you current on the latest deceptions and frauds the drug companies are trying to get away with, and share it with all of your friends and family so that they're aware of the issues too.
