Judge Rebukes EPA on Rat Poison Reversal By Juliet Eilperin - Washington Post Staff Writer - Tuesday, August 9, 2005; Page A02. The Environmental Protection Agency has failed to protect children from rat poison exposure, a federal judge ruled yesterday, suggesting chemical manufacturers should add a bittering agent to keep children from ingesting their products. Ruling in favor of two advocacy groups -- West Harlem Environmental Action and the Natural Resources Defense Council -- U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff wrote that the agency failed to justify its 2001 agreement with pest control companies, which dropped two provisions from a 1998 rule requiring them to include a bittering agent and an indicator dye. "In short, the EPA lacked even the proverbial 'scintilla of evidence' justifying its reversal of the requirement it had imposed, after extensive study, only a few years before," Rakoff wrote.

And I'm going with them. Sept. 3, 2005 | BATON ROUGE, La. -- I got on a bus with California Rep. Maxine Waters Saturday afternoon, not sure where we were going, just knowing we were headed to New Orleans to pick up Hurricane Katrina victims. Even as television news is showing pictures of people being rescued by military helicopters and chartered buses, local and national black leaders are seething at the mismanaged evacuation, as well as the haphazard way even the rescued people are being handled. So they've come up with their own plan: to load the remaining residents on buses they've chartered and bring them to England Air Force Base, a shuttered military installation in Alexandria, La. "My soul wouldn't let me sit and watch this on TV," says Waters, who represents South Central Los Angeles. "I'm just shocked that people have been living for five days, and dying, on the streets of this country. So I came down here, and my friend Cleo Fields came up with this wonderful possibility." That wonderful possibility, hatched by state Sen. Cleo Fields and the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, is to house the displaced residents at the Air Force base instead of shelters and sports stadiums like the Astrodome, many of which are full anyway. They haven't gotten permission to do that, but that's not stopping them. The black leaders say racism is behind both the late response to the emergency and the dispersal of rescued residents far away from New Orleans.

The bizarre deaths of Canada geese started in the fall. People watched geese in Keizer staggering like drunks, struggling to hold their heads up and eventually dying on their stomachs with their wings flared out.
It wasn't just a few occurrences. About 300 Canada geese were found dead between November 2004 and March near McMinnville, Keizer, Salem and the Ankeny, Finley and Baskett Slough wildlife refuges. Lab tests found the cause: zinc phosphide, a poison used to kill voles, mice and ground squirrels. However, the deaths remain a mystery. Another Mother's Story by Madeline Goldstein - While there are many, many moms like Cindy Sheehan who have lost their children in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are thousands and possibly millions of people whose loved ones are coming home alive, but severely injured. Many returning soldiers, their families and friends will be dealing with, among other things, the horrifying effects of the use of Depleted Uranium by the US and Britain. These weapons release deadly, carcinogenic and mutagenic, radioactive particles so abundantly, that whipped up by sandstorms and winds, there is no corner of the planet they can’t penetrate. The radioactivity persists for over 4,500,000,000 years and can cause cancer, leukemia, brain damage, kidney failure, and extreme birth defects - killing millions for centuries to come. Adding to these horrors are Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder, loss of limbs, brain and head injuries and infection. And what do these beautiful young men and women come home to? Right here, in the country that sent them off to battle on probably false premises? They face a crumbling health care system that is virtually bankrupt, cuts in benefits and with definitions of "disabled," "PTSD", etc. getting more narrowly defined. Many vets are waiting months just to get in to see a doctor and approximately 70,000 soldiers with PTSD are having their cases "reviewed" because of cutbacks in VA benefits.
