Rapes, Killings hit Katrina refugees in New Orleans - By Mark Egan - NEW ORLEANS, Sept 3 (Reuters) - People left homeless by Hurricane Katrina told horrific stories of rape, murder and trigger happy guards in two New Orleans centers that were set up as shelters but became places of violence and terror. Police and National Guard troops on Saturday closed down the two centers -- the Superdome arena and the city's convention center -- but then penned them in outside in sweltering heat to keep them from trying to walk out of the city. http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N03464940.htm WHY?*

URGENT PLEA FOR ASSISTANCE FROM DR. ROSS JUDICE IN NEW ORLEANS - I got a call from my husband, Dr. Ross Judice of Acadian Ambulance and Air Med Services, at 4:30 AM. He has been working at the medical triage center at Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans since noon yesterday and is working in tandem with FEMA operations. In fact he is in the headquarters as I write this, coordinating with the command center. He asked that I get this message out to as many people as possible. The airport is now full of over 2000 sick and injured patients. Ross says that people are dying at a rate of 8-10 an hour in there. More people are coming in by the hour and. FEMA has as yet no plan to evacuate these people. Ross has already talked to his CEO, Richard Zuschlag, about the need to get large aircraft (747's or the like) into the airport ASAP to fly these people out to medical centers around the country (Louisiana hospitals are filling up). Richard is working on this. Ross asked if I would put the word out to see if ANYONE has contacts that might help Acadian Ambulance in this effort. In addition, they are in immediate need of stretchers with wheels, litters, and medical golf carts with the extended bed on the back. I know this is difficult logistically for people far away receiving this message, but you have any contacts that might be able to facilitate getting these items to Louisiana today PLEASE do them. Locally, Ross said that Richard Zuschlag is looking for volunteers to be bused to the airport to simply help carry patients from helicopters to into the airport over and over. You will need to come self-contained with all your own food and water, as well as something to sleep on (if sleep is possible). Ross is supposed leave for a few hours today to come home and sleep, then is returning to New Orleans to lead the medical part of an operation planned to rescue more people from New Orleans East. He says there are at least 3-4000 more people trapped in the floodwaters that they are trying to rescue. Thousands more are coming out who will be in need of medical attention. If people are not moved from the Louis Armstrong Airport, there will be NO place to put them. The USS Comfort is on the way to the coast of Louisiana, but if it doesn't arrive today many, many more people going to lose their lives. Ross. If you have any contacts acquire the above equipment immediately, Ross asked that you email me first and I will put you in contact with Acadian Ambulance:
Please provide: 1) Your name and/or company 2) Exactly what you are able to provide 3) When you can deliver it to Louisiana (if you can get it to Acadian's headquarters in Lafayette, they can transport it the rest of the way...obviously the airplanes need to go directly to New Orleans :) 3) How we can reach you
Thank you all for your support. I know you, like me, feel helpless as we watch this debacle unfold. If you need to reach me by phone, my numbers are 337-896-0225 or 337-849-7891. The phone service is spotty in Louisiana, so the most reliable way to reach me is by email at this time. Robin Judice

FROM KINSHIP CIRCLE - 8/31/05
Since Katrina struck, I've been a news junkie. The images are horrendous and intimate at the same time. Each of us can imagine our own families in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi or Florida... But in the mainstream news there has been limited mention of the animal victims.
HEARD
August 29 - A teary newscaster describes dogs barking in the dark. "I hear the dogs yelping. All of them yelping...hoping someone will come." She describes dogs seen wrapped in fallen wires, electrocuted before rescuers' eyes.
August 30 - [Biloxi, Miss] Gary Stillwell, his family, and their three dogs are trapped atop their home, which is floating down the street.
Howard Avenue has turned into a river. Homes are submerged. Somehow the Stillwells manage to climb into the boat floating alongside their house to save themselves, their dogs, and three stranded people crying for help from a tree.
August 30 - Billy Penny, 34, and his girlfriend refuse to evacuate their home on the east side of New Orleans because they will not abandon their companion animals. Patricia Penny, Billy's mother, is convinced her son climbed to the roof and cut a hole to let the animals through. But as of August 30, she has not heard from them.
August 30 - [Mississippi, I believe, one of the Gulf Coast towns] Amid casinos floating in the water, there are three seals stranded in a parking lot. People attempt to get water to them. Finally, someone shoots one of the seals to put her out of her misery.
August 31 - [Gulfport, Miss.] Newscaster: We talked to one man, who despite all the warnings, rode out Katrina with his pets. Survivor: (He is crying) I had to keep me, my dog and cat with me, force them out a window and on to the roof... (He is shown in close-up with his dog and cat, who made it).
August 31 - [Portreve] Newscaster: Piles of pet food are being transported to rescue centers... (She holds up a bag of unopened food). Because not only are the people growing hungry, but the animals [survivors] are too.

1) Noah's Wish: Donate supplies, money
Update: August 31, 2005 The 10 member Noah's Wish initial team is now in the outlying areas of the disaster area. Since our arrival earlier today we have been
-gathering supplies we will need and will be unable to find once we get into disaster area.
-determining what the road conditions are, where the closures are, and the best route to take when we head into some of the worst hit areas tomorrow.
-listening to reports on where it is flooding.
-completing rescue requests.
-networking with other animal organizations to determine where the greatest needs are.
...During the next couple of days it may be difficult to get to a phone that works and to find electricity so we can use our computers. We will make every effort to get an updated posted tomorrow night as I know people are waiting to learn of how the animals have been impacted by this hurricane but the next one may not be until Thursday.
...Just as soon as we can get access to the areas where these animals are located we will. At this time though we cannot say for sure when that will be as the danger is still extremely high and for this reason the authorities are restricting access...

3) Hands-On Help: For Displaced Shelter Animals
Lou Guyton (HSUS)
ANIMALS IMPACTED FROM HURRICANE KATRINA EVACUATION NEEDHELP!
I have just been asked to stage an animal transfer in the DFW area with approximately 145 animals from the New Orleans shelter. New Orleans arrived in Houston this morning and they are currently sorting through the animals to establish what can be brought further inland, and what must go back to New Orleans or be held in Houston. It looks as if the Louisiana folks will be bringing them here on Tuesday morning. Their entire shelter was evacuated and while a few animals went to Baton Rouge, the abundance of them (300)
came to Texas as the New Orleans SPCA and the Houston SPCA have interagency agreements during hurricane events.
That said, will need commitments and assistance to place approximately
145 animals. The animals will be adoptable animals that will enter into your programs permanently. I DO NOT have a final count on species, but it looks like there are about 60 cats/kittens. The location on Tuesday will be at the HSUS Spay Neuter Clinic and Animal Wellness Center at 4830 Village Fair Drive, 75224. The time HAS NOT YET been determined.
Shelters and rescues who desire to pick up animals must have submitted a request prior to arrival so that I can correctly inventory and place the animals in the best possible situations. My email addresses are lguyton@... <mailto:lguyton@...> and louguyton@...<mailto:louguyton@....
Please if you are able to commit to even a couple of animals, email me and I will place you a list. If you need to call me, my cell is: 214-704-4868. Again, the animals will likely arrive sometime on Tuesday. I will update the information on MONDAY afternoon...
Thank you for caring! Lou Guyton, Director HSUS Southwest Regional Office & Spay Neuter Clinic and Animal Wellness Center

5) American Humane Association: Donate money
Update: August 30, 2005 From: Michael L., Care2 Animal Welfare Alerts, YourFriends@...<mailto:YourFriends@... Emily was fortunate to be away from her Louisiana home when Hurricane
Katrina made landfall--but now she is left to wonder about the condition of her home, and of her cat Toby...
Fortunately for people like Emily, the American Humane Association has deployed their emergency responders to provide humanitarian and emergency relief to families and their pets, and pets like Toby will be safe.
When disasters like Hurricane Katrina strike many people are forced to evacuate. Some evacuees were able to take their pets with them, while sadly, many others have had to leave the animals they love behind.
But help arrives quickly. After disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the American Humane Association comes to the rescue of many animals. The American Humane Association's Animal Emergency Services teams assess communities' and animal shelters' needs immediately after disasters strike.
These teams then help coordinate animal rescue operations and provide emergency care and shelter to animal victims.
Based in Colorado, this organization has been called upon for decades by local authorities from throughout the country to rescue animals at risk after all kinds of disasters...

Update: August 26, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall early evening last night that directly hit our surrounding area in Broward County, Fl, (Fort Lauderdale Area) with winds gusts reaching 90 mph. The storm arrived well ahead of the Friday estimated arrival time that was predicted by the National weather service, which left Pets & Animals in Distress volunteers scrambling Thursday afternoon several hours before Katrina hit to help rescue and evacuate over 40 cats...
We are glad to report that all the cats, several dogs, a goat, pig and ourselves have weathered the storm out without any serious problems, except for some downed trees, debris and major flooding that damaged the Gazebo house flooring that sheltered the cats will now have to be replaced...
As of today, Friday, August 26, 2005, 4 people were reported killed in South Florida due the Hurricane, and there are over one million people still without power in south Florida...

9) News: LASPCA Moves Hundreds of Animals -
mailto:AnimalVoicesNews@...
Houston, Texas / Wednesday August 31, 2005
250 animals Houston bound in advance of Katrina
Saturday, August 27, 2005 The LASPCA is moving about 275 animals because a category three storm is approaching New Orleans. It says 25 dogs held because of pending court cases are on their way to Baton Rouge Animal Control.
Another 250 strays and adoptable animals will head to the Houston SPCA this evening, in climate controlled trucks. If the weather's all right and low-lying Japonica Street is free of water and the building has not flooded
-- the animals will return on Tuesday.
The LASPCA recommends that anyone leaving town take all their animals, making sure they have collars and I.D. tags. They also suggest taking a photo of you and the pet, in case you become separated, along with familiar pet toys and food to help keep your pet calm.
They note that Red Cross shelters don't accept pets and the SPCA never boards animals.
Pets cannot survive on their own or tied up, and the SPCA says people who abandon their pets will be charged with cruelty to animals.

I'm trying to find out who has the contracts to supply water to the National Guard in New Orleans and the water they'd be bringing (when?) to the relief effort, and how much it costs, and who is paying for it. (I am curious (as well as furious) that they did not allow any of the voluntary donations of massive amounts of drinking water in to the City or the stadiums.) But I don't really know where to start. Three Miscellaneous E-mail Comments that I received - there are many more:
1.) I spoke with Les and he has left New Orleans and is now in Houston, TX. He is fine. Some friends of his stayed behind so as to not have to leave behind their cat and Les said what people need most is access to water. Either the water pressure needs to be turned on or water needs to be provided to the neighborhoods - which still do not have access to food or the water supply. He asked that this message be spread as greatly as possible.
2./) I know you and others admire the American people, and I am very frustrated & angry with my government too. Not just Federal, but state and local. One of our servicemen who is currently in New Orleans said he would rather be in Iraq. There was at least leadership and an organized plan to follow there. I think that said volumes about how bad the situation really is. Where is our leadership? Any number of excuses have been and will be made. I have yet to find an acceptable one.
3.) Hi All, I'm praying for everyone with family & friends in our hard hit hurricane ravaged gulf states. I appreciate all of the words of comfort & offers of support from many countries. Along with help & condolences has come criticism of our president's defiance toward doing anything to help reverse or at least not increase America's share of polluting contributions to global warming. He's a pig. A pro business, anti humanity president. Yes this current hurricane disaster relief effort is a horrible cluster-muck! Of course more could have & should have been done & faster. "Shoot to kill", authorities told police & military forces, there to help keep peace & manage evacuation & rescue efforts! They've been ordered to stop rescue efforts in some areas because it's too dangerous due to a couple of shots having been heard! No one even knows who fired those shots. They have had to force volunteer rescuers to stay out of large areas where people are still waiting for water, food, & medical attention, etc. A cheap way to kill off thousands of sick & poor people don't you agree? Of course crime should be stopped. the beatings & rapes should be stopped. Even looters may be detained if they are stealing televisions, computers, etc. but it's reported that most of the looters are grabbing what they need to survive! They need clothes & shoes as well as food & water. Items that should have been supplied in sufficient amounts by the local & federal agencies. How can you stop desperate people from struggling to survive on their own?? If it's so dangerous for rescuers to go into some areas why can't those in need be sent supplies via air drops? Those planes & helicopters don't have parachutes? What a crock of crap is this whitehouse bully/cowboy president. I've read enough lately to know it's dangerous to outwardly criticize this guy tho. People are said to have disappeared after publicly criticizing him. I don't know this is a fact, but it isn't hard to believe. Another thing, I clicked on one of the links we get daily that led to another link & found a site that claims to have proof (lots of very impressive pictures) that Russia has the technology to make changes in weather. Probably the USA does too. I have seen documentaries explaining how weather systems work showing cool & warm air combining to influence the storm intensity, force & direction. Would it surprise you to know there was a way to use electromagnetic, or whatever, to increase or decrease temperatures around a storm front to get it to increase in intensity? It wouldn't surprise me, but I don't believe Russia would do it now. I believe our own leaders might do it to take the public's mind off of the war & current political hi jinks by this pres.. I think he'd do anything to get off the current hot seat regarding some of his decisions & pushing for supreme court appointees of his own at the dismay of many in congress. Fact is I wouldn't put it past our leader(s) to do a little genocide of their own in our country in getting rid of so many poor folks. It's sad indeed, but America is no longer a democracy or a free country. It's run by big business, corporations & big pharma. If you believe in the Bible you'll probably recognize much of the last decade or so as the "last days". I have faith in God & believe there are still many good people in the world. The massive worldwide suffering of humanity has been caused by the greed & manipulation of a few people with an evil, selfish agenda & no conscience regarding the harm to this & future generations they may be causing. This tragedy in the gulf states has brought out worldw ide criticism of this president's lack of concern about global warming. Many other world leaders claim our bigger more disastrous storms are a result of global warming & the USA's total disregard toward reducing pollution. Lately I've heard on the news that the president has actually been increasing the pollution limit of manufacturers instead of making them pay to reduce it. I pray for all of us. Oh, another thing has shocked me lately. I've been reading things about a possible change in the constitution to allow a president to serve more than two terms. This president probably does want to declare marshal law on the entire country in order to "protect us" from foreign terrorists, so he can remain in control of the country indefinitely. Americans do not need to worry about outside terrorists as much as we need to worry about the terrorist in the whitehouse! I also read somewhere that even if the president did admit to his lies & deceits th ere would still be peple who blindly believe anything he says & would probably not believe he did anything wrong. that's sad but most likely true. Brainwashing isn't a difficult thing to accomplish if you know how to do it convincingly enough. Thank you for allowing a little ranting. I just had to say something. God Bless us all.

There is no such thing as a "natural" disaster. Hurricanes happen, but death comes from official neglect, from tax cuts for the rich that cut the heart out of public protection. The corpses in the street are victims of a class war in which only one side has a general. - Greg Palast - palast@...
BUSH STRAFES NEW ORLEANS WHERE IS OUR HUEY LONG? by Greg Palast - Friday, September 2, 2005. The National Public Radio news anchor was so excited I thought she'd piss on herself: the President of the United had flown his plane down to 1700 feet to get a better look at the flood damage! And there was a photo of our Commander-in-Chief taken looking out the window. He looked very serious and concerned. That was yesterday. Today he played golf. No kidding. I'm sure the people of New Orleans would have liked to show their appreciation for the official Presidential photo-strafing, but their surface-to-air missiles were wet. There is nothing new under the sun. In 1927, a Republican President had his photo taken as the Mississippi rolled over New Orleans. Calvin Coolidge, "a little fat man with a notebook in his hand," promised to rebuild the state. He didn't. Instead, he left to play golf with Ken Lay or the Ken Lay railroad baron equivalent of his day. In 1927, the Democratic Party had died and was awaiting burial. As depression approached, the coma-Dems, like Franklin Roosevelt, called for balancing the budget. Then, as the waters rose, one politician finally said, roughly, "Screw this! They're lying! The President's lying! The rich fat cats that are drowning you will do it again and again and again. They lead you into imperialist wars for profit, they take away your schools and your hope and when you complain, they blame Blacks and Jews and immigrants. Then they push your kids under. I say, Kick'm in the ass and take your rightful share!" Huey Long laid out a plan: a progressive income tax, real money for education, public works to rebuild Louisiana and America, an end to wars for empire, and an end to financial oligarchy. The waters receded, the anger did not, and Huey "Kingfish" Long was elected Governor of Louisiana in 1928. At the time, Louisiana schools were free, but not the textbooks. Governor Long taxed Big Oil to pay for the books. Rockefeller's oil companies refused pay the textbook tax, so Long ordered the National Guard to seize Standard Oil's fields in the Delta. Huey Long was called a "demagogue" and a "dictator." Of course. Because it was Huey Long who established the concept that a government of the people must protect the people, school, house, and feed them and give every man or woman a job who needs one. Government, he said, "We The People," not plutocrats nor Halliburtons, must build bridges and levies to keep the waters from rising over our heads. All we had to do was share the nation's wealth we created as a nation. But that meant facing down what he called the "concentrations of monopoly power" to finance the needs of the public. In other words, Huey Long founded the modern Democratic Party. Franklin Roosevelt and the party establishment, scared senseless of Long's ineluctable march to the White House, adopted his program, called it the New Deal, and later The New Frontier and the Great Society. America and the party prospered. America could use a Democratic Party again and there's a rumor it's alive -- somewhere. And now is the moment, as it was in '27. As the bodies float in the streets of New Orleans, now is not the time for the Democrats to shirk and slink away, bleating they can't "politicize" this avoidable disaster. Seventy-six years ago this week, Huey Long was shot down, assassinated at the age of 43. But the legacy of his combat remains, from Social Security to veterans' mortgage loans. There is no such thing as a "natural" disaster. Hurricanes happen, but death comes from official neglect, from tax cuts for the rich that cut the heart out of public protection. The corpses in the street are victims of a class war in which only one side has a general. Where is our Huey Long? America needs just one Kingfish to stand up and say that our nation must rid itself of the scarecrow with the idiot chuckle, who has left America broken and in danger while he plays tinker-toy Napoleon on other continents. I realize that the middle of rising flood is a hell of a bad time to give Democrats swimming lessons; but it's act up now or we all go under. ********** A pedagogical note: As I travel around the USA, I'm just horrified at America's stubborn historical amnesia. Americans, as Sam Cooke said, don't know squat about history. We don't learn the names of a nation's capitol until the 82d Airborne lands there. And it doesn't count if you've watched a Ken Burns documentary on PBS. I suggest starting with this: read "Huey Long" by the late historian Harry T. Williams. If you want to ease into it, get the Randy Newman album based on it (Good Old Boys) with the song, "Louisiana 1927." Listen to part of the song at www.GregPalast.com Do NOT watch the crappy right-wing agit-prop film, "Huey Long," by Ken Burns. .......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
... an open letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush - Friday, September 2nd, 2005 - Dear Mr. Bush:
Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag. Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with? Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her! I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike? And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ! On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that. There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland. No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this! You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.
P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them at:
