KATRINA DEATH TOLL CLIMBS, NEW ORLEANS SWAMPED AS LEVEES BREAK -
MIAMI, Florida, August 31, 2005 (ENS) - The death toll from Hurricane Katrina is now estimated at more than 100, and search and rescue officials fear it could rise higher as more people are found in flooded areas and collapsed buildings across Lousiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour placed the death toll at 80 in hard-hit Harrison County alone. New Orleans is swamped, there is no electricity, and police are busy trying to stem a rash of looting.
CALIFORNIA, NEW MEXICO, OREGON SUE TO BRING BACK ROADLESS RULE -
SAN FRANCISCO, California, August 30, 2005 (ENS) - The states of California, New Mexico and Oregon today filed a lawsuit against the Bush administration for dismantling restrictions on roadbuilding and logging in nearly 58.5 million acres of the country's remaining backcountry and undeveloped forests. The Bush administration replaced the roadless rule established by the Clinton administration with a regulation that places the burden of protecting national forests on the states.

KATRINA CLAIMS 55 LIVES, FLOODS NEW ORLEANS - MIAMI, Florida, August 30, 2005 (ENS) - Hurricane Katrina sideswiped New Orleans early Monday without creating the worst case doomsday scenario many had feared, but it claimed at least 55 lives in Louisiana and Mississippi, said officials, who called it one of the worst storms ever to hit the United States. The storm made an eastward turn at the last minute to spare the city of New Orleans and walloped Gulfport and Biloxi, Misssissippi instead.

KABUL ZOO NO SANCTUARY FOR ANIMALS - By Abdul Baseer Saeed KABUL, Afghanistan, August 30, 2005 (ENS) - Down in Kabul's southwestern area of Deh Mazang, the zoo is a cool green oasis amid the dust and debris of the war-ravaged city. But all is not as it seems. The animals are apparently up in arms at the conditions they live in, and the zookeepers are angry too.

Nine Health Hazards in Katrina's Wake- How to stay well after a hurricane. -If life were fair, simply surviving a hurricane as devastating as Katrina would be good enough. But as the residents of the Gulf Coast have now discovered, there are plenty of threats to life and limb in the days and weeks after the skies have cleared. Here's a rundown of some the hazards:
Drowning - Electrocution - Fire and Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning.- Physical Trauma - Gastrointestinal Illnesses - Despite common belief, there is generally no health danger from corpses in the water.
Respiratory Ailments -
Pre-existing Conditions - Allergies and Asthma - As residents return to their homes—if the structures are still standing—mold becomes an even greater issue, especially in the humid conditions of the Gulf Coast. Wet, porous items like carpet and upholstered furniture should be tossed. Wear a protective mask and clothing while cleaning up to minimize exposure. -

Plan would ease power plant pollution rule - Aug 31, 2005, 19:00 GMT- WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- Pollution controls on older power-generation plants would be eased under regulations drafted by the Bush administration, The Washington Post reported.
The draft document was given to the Post by the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group that harshly criticized the plan. The Post report on the proposal was published Wednesday. The key difference is determining that amount of pollution a power plants could potentially produce per hour, opposed to the current standard of pollution produced each year.
The Post said improvement to some plants could allow them to operate more hours a year, possibly allowing for a greater amount of pollution. The Environmental Protection Agency estimated some plants would then legally be allowed to generate 100,000 tons a year of pollution that would be illegal under current New Source Review rules. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer told the Post the proposed rule would be \"devastating\" to prosecutions under the New Source Review. Spitzer has initiated legal action against 28 power plants -- 22 outside of New York -- for Clean Air Act violations.

CLOUT GROWING, SMALL-SCALE NATURAL FARMERS ARE BEING COURTED BY BIG FOOD - Third annual National Workshop on State and Local Food Policy: "Creating Opportunity Through Joint Producer Initiatives." - September 8-9, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. A farm-raised law school professor who grows organic vegetables that he sells to local restaurants is hosting a national conference to help small-scale farmers like himself work with each other to break into a food system that is increasingly interested in healthy food products that aren't produced by massive companies. "Many people attending the conference have been involved in selling at farmers markets," says Neil Hamilton, who grew up on a 200-acre family farm in Adams County, Iowa, where his family has farmed since 1872. "This will give them access to producers, distributors and capitalization. It's a significant step for a producer looking for an opportunity to break into the food system." Hamilton is on a mission to spread the notion of what he calls "Food Democracy" - getting more information about food and agriculture into the hands of consumers. He believes that "producer marketing associations" are the next big thing in the Food Democracy movement, because they allow groups of small farmers producing everything from organic milk to free range pigs to join together to sell their products. This year's conference, the third annual National Workshop on State and Local Food Policy is titled "Creating Opportunity Through Joint Producer Initiatives." It is co-organized by center staff Christine Pardee, co-director of the State and Local Food Policy Project, and Doug O'Brien, senior staff attorney. The conference is supported with funding from the USDA Risk Management Agency, Community Outreach & Assistance Partnership Program.
The conference, which will be held at Drake's Olmsted Center on Sept. 8 and 9, will convene a diverse group of farmers, agriculture leaders, lenders and advisers involved with producer marketing initiatives. Topics discussed will include financing, ownership and control, and risk management techniques. Workshop participants will come from about 20 states and two countries, and include officials from Sysco, the world's largest institutional food supplier. Craig Watson, vice president for quality assurance and agricultural sustainability at Sysco Corp., will give a keynote address at noon on Thursday, Sept. 8. "His presence is significant," Hamilton says, "because it shows Sysco's interest in acquiring foods that have stories and are unique." For more information about the conference:

OFF-TOPIC: HEY, GEORGE......HOW ABOUT TAKING A POLYGRAPH? Hey, this is my fantasy, so don’t nitpick. It’s my scenario, so I’ve secured a completely fool-proof lie detector run by the world’s best polygraph expert. I’ve arranged for the test to be broadcast live by every radio and television network in the entire country. And, fantasy of fantasies, George W. Bush has agreed to answer my questions, unaided by external feeds and unaccompanied by Karl Rove or Dick Cheney, while hooked up to the machine. Heck, if I’m going to hallucinate, let’s make it good. I bet that millions of Americans share this daydream. Just imagine having George W. Bush, President of these United States, alone in a room for just one hour. And imagine being able to question him freely about his disastrous presidency. And then, for one fantastic moment, imagine putting him in the position of having to tell the truth! For sure, in my fantasy, and with my special polygraph, he’d have to tell the truth.

That presidential critic was not some left-winged, bleeding heart, liberal Democrat. It was then Govenor George W. Bush of Texas in 1999, talking about President Clinton's little war in Bosnia. Now when we are up to our eyes in Iraqi sand and watching a very bad situation that Mr. Bush created, turn even worse and after we have spent over $300 Billion Dollars and lost more than 1,850 of our own soldiers - our Mr. Bush refuses to announce any time table for any U.S. troop withdrawal.............Amazing!

OFF-TOPIC: Hawaii puts cap on gas prices - Industry will watch closely; similar plan unlikely in California - HONOLULU — In an effort to gain some control over what motorists pay at the pump, Hawaii on Wednesday became the first state in the U.S. to set caps on the wholesale price of gasoline. California motorists shouldn't expect similar caps anytime soon, state officials said. The 2004 law authorizing the caps was intended to force Hawaii's two refiners, Chevron Corp. of San Ramon and Tesoro Corp., to set their wholesale prices closer to mainland rates. Proponents of the law said the refiners were taking advantage of the small, isolated market to charge exorbitant prices.

The Washington-based group, Beyond Pesticides, is working with community residents who are asking for evidence that spraying their communities with toxic pesticides actually controls the virus and is worth the health risks associated with widespread public exposure. The federal agency responsible for determining the effectiveness of these spray practices, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has not conducted reviews, as required by law. "Ground spraying in general is a waste of money," said noted entomologist and Cornell University professor David Pimentel. "Most ground spraying is political and has very little to do with effective mosquito control." "EPA's lack of data on the effectiveness of mosquito sprays is problematic because it allows hazardous chemical use despite the availability of alternative preventive and less toxic approaches," said Jay Feldman, executive director of Beyond Pesticides, a national public health advocacy organization. Roundup Revelation - Weed Killer Adjuvants May Boost Toxicity By Dorothy Bonn - EHP Environmental Health - Although the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup is generally thought to be less toxic to the ecosystem than other pesticides, concerns about its effects on human reproduction persist. In a study in Ontario, Canada, exposure of male farmers to glyphosate-based herbicides was associated with an increase in miscarriage and premature birth in farm families. Seeking an explanation for these pregnancy-related problems, researchers at France's Université de Caen investigated the effects of the full Roundup formulation and glyphosate alone on cultured human placental cells [EHP 113:716-720]. The herbicide, they found, killed the cells at concentrations far below those used in agricultural practice. Surprisingly, they also found that Roundup was at least twice as toxic as glyphosate alone.

Environmental Health Crisis In Punjab - Notwithstanding the severity of cancer prevalence in various parts of Punjab, the state health department is conveniently hiding behind its own inadequacies. The official misinformation regarding severity of cancer and traces of pesticides found in blood samples of people is an act of offence as it undermines the issue of state? environmental health. It is indeed a deliberate attempt to downplay a serious situation which potentially threatens all future generations. Persistent negation of data which establishes that the state and its people are in the face of a grave ecological disaster show that Punjab Government is more interested in protecting the pesticide lobby than getting its act together in the face of astounding discoveries regarding cause of cancers in the region. But for some strange reason, the government is deliberately opposing findings of the scientifically designed Punjab Pollution Control Board- PGIEMR study as also the findings of CSE? When Health department and some of agriculture experts are negating the PGIMER-PPCB study the environmental health experts are praising the study .Country's foremost environmental Health expert Dr.S.G.Kabra, Faculty, IIHMR, Jaipur and Advisor, SDM Hospital, Jaipur says " The well planned and executed PGI Chandigarh study brings out unequivocal evidence that the use of indiscriminate, indiscreet, excessive and unsafe use of pesticides in the study area is resulting into significantly higher number of pesticide related cancers and cancer deaths. " We are a nation that worships the frontier tradition, and our heroes are those who champion justice through violent retaliation against injustice. It is not simple to adopt a credo that moral force has as much strength and virtue as the capacity to return a physical blow; or that to refrain from hitting back requires more will and bravery than the automatic reflexes of defense. "I believe that if we had and would keep our dirty, bloody, dollar-soaked fingers out of the business of these [Third World] nations so full of depressed, exploited people, they will arrive at a solution of their own....
