Why Our Healthcare System Isn't Healthy - Most people are well aware that an estimated 45 million Americans currently do not have healthcare, but is the crisis simply the lack of health insurance or even the cost of health insurance? Is there a bigger underlying problem at the root of our healthcare system? Although the U.S. claims to have the most advanced medicine in the world, government health statistics and peer-reviewed journals are painting a different picture -- that allopathic medicine often causes more harm than good. ...... One recent study estimated the total unnecessary deaths from iatrogenic causes, also known as death from physician error or death from medical treatment, at approximately 800,000 per year at a cost of $282 billion per year, which would make death from American medicine the leading cause of death in our country.......Nearly two million patients in the U.S. get an infection while in the hospital each year, and of those patients over 90,000 die per year, up dramatically from just 13,300 in 1992. Statistics show that approximately 56% of the population has been unnecessarily treated, or mistreated, by the medical industry.........

Study links IQ to pesticide use By Patrick Springer, The Forum - Friday, March 24, 2006. ·North Dakota farm children exposed to pesticides performed significantly lower than their peers in IQ tests, according to preliminary results of a study released Thursday.  Researchers at the University of North Dakota studied two groups of children in the northern Red River Valley, one group living on or near an active farm or field, another living at least a mile away from those locations.  Children living on or near farms tested an average of five points lower on standard IQ tests, said Patricia Moulton, an experimental psychologist at UND.  "That's a significant difference," she said. http://www.in-forum.com/articles/index.cfm?id=121375&section=News

L.A. Pollution Linked to Low Sperm. New research shows poor air quality isn't just bad for your lungs, it may be having a negative affect on your sperm. Researchers at USC compared hundreds of sperm samples from men who donated at least 10 times within a two-year period to a Los Angeles sperm bank. They found that as the ozone level went up, the sperm concentration went down. KTLA TV, California. 24 March 2006. http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=3908283&s=1092317

Pesticides Associated With Undescended Testicles.  In a study of boys in Finland and Denmark, researchers found that cryptorchidism is associated with exposures to a mixture of 8 persistent pesticides. These results are consistent with animal studies, and indicate that exposure to persistent organochlorine pesticides may adversely affect testicular descent in boys. EHP. 1 March 2006. http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=3908290&s=1092317

More Birth Defects Near Incinerator.  According to data from the Office of National Statistics, one in every 16 babies has a birth defect in rural mid Devon (UK), an area with a waste incinerator. Only 1 baby in 630 babies born in London's traffic-clogged Islington had a birth defect that same year.  http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=3908288&s=1092317.

Good Genes Gone Bad.  Traditionally, scientists have believed diseases and disabilities can be attributed to either genetics or the environment. New research, however, suggests that while we inherit our genes from our parents, the environment---incluing diet, experience and exposures to toxins---can alter how a specific gene behaves throughout life. Some environmental contaminants can interfere with gene expression, preventing genes from turning on when you need them, or turning off when they should be silent. An example of this is arsenic exposure . Experiments have shown than low levels of arsenic can prevent some genes from being turned on by hormones that control genes that are important for disease resistance, glucose metabolism and other vital processes. If these experiments cause the same processes in humans, arsenic exposure at low levels could prevent the body from fighting off tumor growth. This new understanding holds immense promise for public health. It means that we may be able to prevent those diseases and disabilities that are caused by an environmental assault on a gene. http://rd.bcentral.com/?ID=3908285&s=1092317

NJ attorney general sues TruGreen ChemLawn - NEWARK, NJ - In February, the New Jersey attorney general and the

The NJDCA says it received 68 complaints from TruGreen customers between 2000 and 2005.  "We allege that this lawn care company misled customers about its prices and charged customers for lawn treatments they did not request or authorize," said Attorney General Farber. "We are prepared to take

At first glance it looks like any other memorial to men long-dead and half-forgotten. But this one is slightly different; it commemorates those killed by the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant: above an inscription are three polished steel plates filled with the dozens of names of those who had died by 1996; beside that are 200 names added in 2001. And beside these, at the far end of the monument, the builders have left a long, empty space: for the deaths yet to come.
