ITCHING CUTANEOUS ERUPTION SOUTH AFRICA (NORTHWEST): REQUEST FOR INFORMATION - A mysterious skin-worm sickness has hit several villages around Mafikeng in the North West, health officials said on Tuesday. "We have never experienced anything like this," said provincial health spokesperson Tebogo Lekgethwane. "People come to clinics complaining that their body is itching. Within 3 days small sores develop. A yellow spot then develops from each sore as it gets ripe. Once the sore is expressed a worm comes out of it." Lekgethwane said one theory had it that unidentified insects were laying eggs on clothes and that the eggs then penetrated the skin to mature into a worm.  The North West health department warned villages around Mafikeng on Tuesday to report to a clinic if they noticed sores developing on their bodies. People from villages near Mafikeng have been treated since December 2005 for the condition. "During visits to the homes of these people, it was found that dogs were also affected," said Lekgethwane. The department of agriculture's veterinary public health and animal unit had taken specimens of the worms to identify their origin.

Thursday February 2nd 2006 Page 16 - "Pesticide Linked To Deadly Brain Disease".  Regular pesticide exposure may play a role in deadly motor neuron disease, Australian research suggests.  University of Sydney Scientists have found some patients with the paralysing disease have differences in a gene known as paroxyhase involved in breaking down organic phosphates.           Nuerologist Roger Phamphlett yesterday said preliminary results from a survey of 900 Australians including 300 people with motor neuron disease suggested regular exsposure to pesticide may increase a persons risk of developing the condition.  The Scientists have set up the first DNA bank in the southern hemisphere to investigate the environmental and genetic influences underlying motor neuron disease which usually strikes people aged in their 50's and 60's. Little is understood about the causes  of motor neuron disease which begins with either muscle weakness.muscle twitching or difficulty in speaking and progressively  leads to paralysis.  Most patients die within two to five years of diagnosis. About 1000 Australians are living with the condition at one time.
