I research every brand. Some of my safe choices are:

Hamburger buns and tortillas: Ezekiel 4:9

Pork: Beelers Pure Pork

Coffee: Rocamojo (I can only get it when there's a good sale at Amazon.com)

Flour: a small organic cooperative in South Dakota, can't remember the name offhand.

Rice: Lundberg

Cheese: Cedar Grove

Frozen Vegetables: Sno Pac

Milk: Mesquite Valley

Miscellaneous: Newman's Own, Bob's Red Mill, and select others.
For cleaning and laundry:

Homemade laundry soap
Dr. Bronner's
Vinegar
Baking soda
Kirk's Castille
Murphy's Oil Soap (all purpose)

Hmmm...This is an interesting topic.

My dogs eat Pedigree and the cats eat Cat Chow (I think)

My favorite laundry detergent is Arm & Hammer "natural" in the green bottle. I also like the Mela Power from Melaleuca.

My favorite cleaner is actually plain baking soda and vinegar. I buy a big bag of baking soda @ Sam's. I do occasionally use bleach for deep stains.

I like the Seventh Generation dish washing solution.

My kids favorite cereal is Peanut Butter Bumpers. They also like the chocolate ones...in fact, they usually mix them together.

I can't think of anything else. Next!

What are y0ur favorite brands? This could be anything, food, pet stuff,
livestock stuff, dry goods, grooming, cleaning or even electronics.

I will go first, I have my 'shield' up. If you all tell me that my
catfood is poison, so be it, I'll take the info with the good intent it
is given.

This is hard! There is very little that I buy that reflects brand
loyality. (ie I buy it even if it costs more)

Anyway, our favorite catfood is 9 Lives for canned and Country Life (I
think) that comes in a green bag at Berends. Won't spend the $ for the
cat 'health foods'. Used to think IAMs was good, but after the fiasco
last year, I buy what fits our budget and try to avoid foods that should
be marked with the skull and crossbones.

Challenge Butter. Ovaltine Chocolate Malt Flavor (have used it since I
was a child). Coffee beans. Wheatena cereal. Oil of Olay moisturizer,
the original pink cream. 4711 cologne. Oxi Clean powdered laundy
booster instead of bleach. Seventh Generation Dish Washer detergent.
All Free and Clear (SHIELD UP!)

I could make a much long list of brands I don't buy. Most of the time,
I shop for the best price on the product I need. I look for the
knowledge to make products I use, such as bath soap and moisturizers. I
look at receipes for making convience foods for my emergency pantry
(since if I am using my pantry in an emergency I won't have the time and
energy for "kitchen stadium".

Last week I was asked by BuidItSolar.com owner if he could feature my
radiant barriers and how I was dealing with the Texas heat radiating
into my west facing windows, since adding the Solar Screens were not
as effective as we had hoped.

Here is the URL: http://tinyurl.com/68y7l7

I hope this helps someone dealing with the same problem we have been.

I just lost my nice long, rambling post on attitude. Obviously fate
decided to spare you all.

So to put it simply, how does attitude help or break your efforts to
live healthy or frugally.

One attitude I struggle to control is a sense of lack. This is one of
the core aspects of my personality from childhood so I have learned how
to use it to be strong, rather than let it defeat me. Having this
feeling as a part of my reality makes me inclined to save for a future
time of want. It also makes me want to learn those skills needed for
self production of basic items, and a couple that can be bartered. I am
now working on including items that feel abundant into my environment so
that I don't have the need for things for the sake of things.
Abundance, a feeling of being generously blessed isn't materially based,
so when I am feeling a sense of lack, I know to look to the spiritual
before the material, providing the pantry isn't bare.

What are you doing to feel abundant? I am putting more than the basic
item for my kitchen sink, bathroom sink, their faucets, two big porches
on the house. I have lots of books, a beautiful painting from my
daughter, my collection of crystals, a metal wall art piece from my
sister and rich colored area rugs. I buy shoes that fit and feel good.
With square feet, getting shoes that fit is challenging, and sore feet
make me feel impoverished no matter what the rest of my clothes and
jewelry costs.

Add a different attitude if it better serves you. Making through "tough
times" is mostly mental. Let's do our part to counter the media's
negative approach.

I read this information and can't express in a few short lines how
upsetting this is to me. When MONEY becomes the focus, the ONLY
focus, the consumer is subjected to almost any thing imaginable. Of
course irradiating foods keeps the concern for unsanitary growing
conditions at bay. Then again, so does a nuclear explosion. Geeze.

Reading up on the Genetically Modified foods we have been eating since
the 1990s, and the primary health related side effects which only
fuels Big Pharm, it is what we might have suspected......Heart
Disease, Cancer, Obesity, can't remember the 4th one. My guess is we
are seeing Dementia and Depression in this group without it yet being
identified. Some Dementia is being seen as early as the 30s.

Sure enough keeps me motivated to grow what I can and eat only what I
can grow.

DH just came in and annouced he was going to shower and I suggested
that he just go out in the back yard. I hadn't looked outside, so when
he started laughing I did and saw that the rain was coming down about
the same as our shower. Then he said his mom would give them a bar of
soap and send them outside at the summer house when they were kids in
this kind of rain. The summer house was on a well and they had to
conserve water there (New Hampshire, he grew up in RI). I never had a
summer house and only experienced desert rain so the gentle rain of the
last couple days is only miserable for me. I know our gardens and
farmers love it, but my joints - whine.. Moved from Ohio to get away
from this kind of weather. Oh well, as long as the land is nourished, I
can deal with it. Blessings to those that have to work despite the pain.

Anyway, have you found your self saying what your spouse is thinking, or
knowing what the kid is going to do. After 25 years of marriage, FH and
I are thinking more and more alike, even liking the same things. Bear
in mind, our likes are often at the opposite end of the spectrum, so
when we went shopping for the fixtures and other things for the house, I
expected to have lots of "ok" stuff but to my surprise, he liked some
of the more eclectic things. Anyhow, the house will have more "luxury"
stuff than I thought. Luxury items are things that feel abundant, not
necessarily high-priced.

As to common thoughts, our moving Wichita Falls to the shock and dismay
of friends and family, started out with "I've been thinking...."

I had some email correspondence with Kashi and they admitted they use GMO ingredients in their food products.

One of these days I might have the energy and time to put up a website with details about every natural and organic brand. I don't have information about many of them though, because I only check out the ones that are available to me.

If and until I get such a site up, there's this handy shopper's guide: http://www.truefoodnow.org/shoppersguide/guide_printable.html

As for your other thoughts, I do know a discussion I want to start. I just haven't had time or energy to type out the first post, which will be rather involved. Right now I have a splitting headache and a hundred things I need to be doing. But I'll try to get that post typed out today. Or at least in the next couple days. I'll try really hard.

Thanks, that's a great article.

Another recycle/donate program is for professional womens clothes.  Check with your local women's shelter and they will probably know who does this, if they don't take the donations themselves.  For women trying to get out of poverty, getting decent clothes for job interviews is very difficult, particularly if they are full figured or not a standard size. When I left banking, I donated most of my work clothes, keeping a couple outfits for speeches and church, but not the closet full like before. They were so grateful.  This includes gently worn shoes.

So if you are decluttering your closet, and haven't worn it in a couple years, if it is still in good shape pass it on.

Thanks, bookmarked that one, will dig into it later. I am so impressed
by what we could do. I save this kind of knowledge since one day it may
be needed.

Don't feel lazy, I know when I get in that frame of mind I do even less.
Tomorrow is a back treatment, but then Friday I'll try to get out and
work on my "second" season garden. The fence is done, and once I get
the chicken wire on it, I can start planting. I am still amazed that I
have almost 120 frost free days left in the year. Didn't have that many
for the whole season when we lived in Cleveland. Have to have the fence
on tightly, with all the tender plants sitting there as a critter all
you can eat buffet. Hope that leaving the bulk of land natural will
discourage them from coming up to the house, but I am an optimist.

I typed in MSG and Googled, and this was  sixth on the list, 3 of the first entries were for Madison Square Garden.

http://www.truthinlabeling.org/  a good starting point for more research

http://www.msgtruth.org/

http://www.evitamins.com/healthnotes.asp?ContentID=1238005  after looking at this page, I actually might be MSG sensitive, though I hadn't associated my migraines, and other sensitivities to it before.  Will need to do further research.  As it is I don't eat out near as often as I would like, simply because I'm a better cook than those at most of our local restraunts. (spent years in food service) .  I usually eat out for the foods I don't like to make or just don't have quite the knack to do.  My mexican food is just a bit bland, probably don't use a common seasoning.  I think my biggest disappointment is I simply can't find good asian food.  Even learned to make sushi because other than one place in town, I can do better for less cost.

I have read about these folks before.  Or maybe it was youtube?  I know I have heard of them.  Quiet impressive.
ok, now I feel lazy. :(      26 acres and barely a garden. Sad.  I need to get my rear in gear.
Thnx for the nudge!

I was searching for solar oven plans and came across this:

http://urbanhomeste ad.org/journal/

Scroll down below the chickens in the sidebar and see how much these people
are growing on 1/5 acre in Pasadena, CA. Amazing!

This is a good illustration of how sustainable we can be if we'll just work
at it. I keep hearing the argument that going organic will starve the world,
but that simply isn't true if sustainability is practiced.

I confess, I did not read the whole thing.  But I have done some research on MSG before.
I have 2 sons that are very allergic to MSG.  They get massive headaches, and nosebleeds at other times.  It is difficult to stay away from.
In essence just about any processed food will have MSG in it.  Your best bet is to eat organic food from ingredients, not boxed items.  And stay out of restaurants and fast food places.
My oldest son called me not long ago, thinking he had food poisoning.  When I started questioning him he told me he had eaten at a Chili's, with his wife.  They ate the same thing.  He was sick, she was not.  I think it was some sort of fried chicken strips he had.  He was so sick he had the type of migraine that makes you throw up.
I had to remind him to stay away from that stuff.... kids forget too easy.

I would not doubt that MSG lends to obesity.  But, then it goes along with eating fast food, so it could be a double edged sword.

Kathy J

We are eating as natural and home cooked as possible.  My goal is to supply as much as our food as possible.  It is not easy for a large family.

This is rather lengthy, a friend of mine sent it to me. I did read
it and found it to be quite scary - I have no idea on how 'good' this
info. is, but I thought maybe one of you more informed members could
give feedback on this article for the rest of us who aren't. I would
like to say I would sit here and do some research myself, but more
then 15 mins at the computer and the kids/dog start to ransack the
house LOL The only thing I know about MSG is that if I eat chinese
food I get very sick and my Doctor, many years ago, told me it was
due to MSG?

MSG - Slowly
Poisoning America
Author Unknown
5-1-4

I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive
obesity
epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a research
assistant at the
University of Waterloo, and spent years working for the government.

He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals
for a book
he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In hundreds of
studies
around the world, scientists were creating obese mice and rats to use
in diet or
diabetes test studies.

No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have
to create
them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by injecting them with
a chemical
when they are first born. The MSG triples the amount of insulin the
pancreas
creates, causing rats (and humans?) to become obese They even have a
title for
the race of fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats" .

MSG?

I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and
the fridge.

MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos, the
Lays
flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper,
Heinz canned
gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft salad dressings,
especially the
'healthy low fat' ones. The items that didn't have MSG had something
called
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is just another name for
Monosodium
Glutamate. It was shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed
our
children everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under
many different
names in order to fool those who catch on.

But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we started
asking at
the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many employees, even the
managers,
swore they didn't use MSG. But when we ask for the ingredient list,
which they
grudgingly provided, sure enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
were
everywhere. Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every
restaurant, even
the sit down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in
abundance. Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender:
MSG was in
every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I loved to
eat that
coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!

So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or
a vitamin?

Not according to my friend John. In the book he wrote, an expose of
the food
additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of America,
(www.spofamerica. com ),
he said that MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on
the human
body.

Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers lobby
group
supporting MSG at http://www.msgfacts .com/facts/ msgfa ct12.html
explains that
the reason they add it to food is to make people eat more. A study of
elderly
people showed that people eat more of the foods that it is added to.
The
Glutamate Association lobby group says eating more benefits the
elderly, but
what does it do to the rest of us?

'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG is
concerned!

And we wonder why the nation is overweight? The MSG manufacturers
themselves
admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people
choose their
product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would
if MSG
wasn't added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an
addictive
substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!

Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years ago,
MSG has
been added in larger and larger doses to the prepackaged meals,
soups, snacks
and fast foods we are tempted to eat everyday.

The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food.
They claim
it's safe to eat in any amount.

How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific
studies with
titles like these?

The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of
exercise in
obesity. Gobatto CA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA. Res Commun Mol
Pathol
Pharmacol. 2002

Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-induced hypothalamic serotonin
release in both
normal and monosodium glutamate-obese rats. Guimaraes RB, Telles MM,
Coelho VB,
Mori RC, Nascimento CM, Ribeiro Brain Res Bull. 2002 Aug

Obesity induced by neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in
spontaneously
hypertensive rats: an animal model of multiple risk factors. Iwase M,
Yamamoto
M, Iino K, Ichikawa K, Shinohara N, Yoshinari Fujishima

Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar

Hypothalamic lesion induced by injection of monosodium glutamate in
suckling
period and subsequent development of obesity. Tanaka K, Shimada M,
Nakao K,
Kusunoki Exp Neurol. 1978 Oct

Yes, that last study was not a typo, it WAS written in 1978. Both the
medical
research community and food "manufaturers" have known MSG's side
effects for
decades!

Many more studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes,

Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's.

But what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping
fattening and
addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the obesity epidemic
we now see?

Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters
are pushing a
Bill through Congress. Called the "Personal Responsibility in Food
Consumption
Act" also known as the "Cheeseburger Bill", this sweeping law bans
anyone from
suing food manufacturers, sellers and distributors. Even if it comes
out that
they purposely added an addictive chemical to their foods. Read about
it for
yourself at: http://www.yahoo. com.http: //story.n ews.yahoo.com/
news?
tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040311/ ap_on_go_ co/obesity_ lawsu its_4

The Bill has already been rushed through the House of
Representatives, and is
due for the same rubber stamp at Senate level. It is important that
Bush and his
corporate supporters get it through before the media lets everyone
know about
MSG, the intentional Nicotine for food.

Several months ago, John Erb took his book and his concerns to one of
the
highest government health officials in Canada. While sitting in the
Government
office, the official told him "Sure I know how bad MSG is, I wouldn't
touch the
stuff!" But this top level government official refused to tell the
public what
he knew.

The big media doesn't want to tell the public either, fearing legal
issues with
their advertisers. It seems that the fallout on the fast food
industry may hurt
their profit margin.

So what do we do?

The food producers and restaurants have been addicting us to their
products for
years, and now we are paying the price for it.

Our children should not be cursed with obesity caused by an addictive
food
additive.

But what can I do about it? I'm just one voice, what can I do to stop
the
poisoning of our children, while guys like Bush are insuring financial
protection for the industry that is poisoning us.

I for one am doing something about it.

I am sending this email out to everyone I know in an attempt to show
you the
truth that the corporate owned politicians and media won't tell you.

The best way you can help save yourself and your children from this
drug-induced
epidemic, is to forward this email to everyone. With any luck, it
will circle
the globe before Bush can pass the Bill protecting those who poisoned
us.

The food industry learned a lot from the tobacco industry. Imagine if
big
tobacco had a bill like this in place before someone blew the whistle
on
Nicotine?

Blow the whistle on MSG.

If you are one of the few who can still believe that MSG is good for
us, and you
don't believe what John Erb has to say, see for yourself. Go to the
National
Library of Medicine, at www.pubmed.com
http://www.pubmed. com . Type in the words "MSG Obese", and read a
few of the
115 medical studies that appear.

We do not want to be rats in one giant experiment, and we do not
approve of food
that makes us into a nation of obese, lethargic, addicted sheep,
waiting for the
slaughter.

With your help we can put an end to this, and stop the Slow Poisoning
of
America. Let's save our children

Hidden Sources Of MSG In Foods
From the book 'Excitotoxins - The Taste That Kills'
By Dr. Russell Blaylock, MD
3-6-3

What if someone were to tell you that a chemical (MSG) added to food
could cause
brain damage in your children, and that this chemical could effect
how your
children's nervous systems formed during development so that in later
years they
may have learning or emotional difficulties?

What if there was scientific evidence that these chemicals could
permanently
damage a critical part of the brain known to control hormones so that
later in
life your child might have endocrine problems? How would you feel?

Suppose evidence was presented to you strongly suggesting that the
artificial
sweetener in your diet soft drink may cause brain tumors to develop,
and that
the number of brain tumors reported since the introduction of this
widespread
introduction of this artificial sweetener has risen dramatically?
Would that
affect your decision to drink these products and especially to allow
your
children to drink them? What if you could be shown overwhelming
evidence that
one of the main ingredients in this sweetener (aspartate) could cause
the same
brain lesions as MSG? Would that affect your buying decisions?

And finally, what if it could be demonstrated that all of these types
of
chemicals, called excitotoxins, could possibly aggravate or even
precipitate
many of today's epidemic neurodegenerative brain diseases such as
Parkinson's
disease, Huntington's disease, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease? Would
you be
concerned if you knew that these excitotoxin food additives are a
particular
risk if you have diabetes, or have ever had a stroke, brain injury,
brain tumor,
seizure, or have suffered from hypertension, meningitis, or viral
encephalitis?

Would you also be upset to learn that many of the brain lesions
caused by these
products in your children are irreversible and can result from a
SINGLE exposure
of these products in sufficient concentration?

How would you feel when you learn the food industry hides and
disguises these
excitotoxin additives (MSG and Aspartate) so they can't be recognized?
Incredulous? Enraged? The fact is many foods are labeled as
having "No MSG" but
in fact not only contain MSG but also are laced with other
excitotoxins of equal
potency and danger.

All of the above are true. And all of these well known brain toxins
are poured
into our food and drink by the thousands of tons to boost sales.
These additives
have NO OTHER purpose other than to enhance to TASTE of food and the
SWEETNESS
of various diet products.

Hidden Sources Of MSG
As discussed previously, the glutamate (MSG) manufacturers and the
processed
food industries are always on a quest to disguise the MSG added to
food. Below
is a partial list of the most common names for disguised MSG.
Remember also that
the powerful excitotoxins, aspartate and L-cystine, are frequently
added to
foods and according to FDA rules require NO LABELING AT ALL.
* Food Additives that ALWAYS contain MSG *

Monosodium Glutamate
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein
Hydrolyzed Protein
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein
Plant Protein Extract
Sodium Caseinate
Calcium Caseinate
Yeast Extract
Textured Protein (Including TVP)
Autolyzed Yeast
Hydrolyzed Oat Flour
Corn Oil

* Food Additives That FREQUENTLY Contain MSG *

Malt Extract
Malt Flavoring
Bouillon
Broth
Stock
Flavoring
Natural Flavors/Flavoring
Natural Beef Or Chicken Flavoring
Seasoning
Spices

* Food Additives That MAY Contain MSG Or Excitotoxins *

Carrageenan
Enzymes
Soy Protein Concentrate
Soy Protein Isolate
Whey Protein Concentrate
Also: Protease Enzymes of various sources can release excitotoxin
amino acids
from food proteins.
Aspartame - An Intense Source Of Excitotoxins
Aspartame is a sweetener made from two amino acids, phenylalanine and
the
excitotoxin aspartate. It should be avoided at all costs. Aspartame
complaints
accounts for approximately 70% of ALL complaints to the FDA. It is
implicated in
everything from blindness to headaches to convulsions. Sold under
dozens of
brand names such as NutraSweet and Equal, aspartame breaks down
within 20
minutes at room temperature into several primary toxic and dangerous
ingredients:
1. DKP (diketopiperazine) (When ingested, converts to a near
duplicate of
a powerful brain tumor causing agent)
2. Formic Acid (ant venom)
3. Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
4. Methanol (causes blindness... extremely dangerous substance)
Common Examples:
Diet soft drinks, sugar free gums, sugar free Kool Aid, Crystal Light,
childrens' medications, and thousands of other products claiming to
be 'low
calorie', 'diet', or 'sugar free'.
A Final Note...
Dr. Blaylock recounted a meeting with a senior executive in the food
additive
industry who told him point blank that these excitotoxins are going
to be in our
food no matter how many name changes are necessary...
