It is possible - try the other suggestion first, to clean off the white oxide
deposits from the aluminum plates using a scouring pad. IF that doesn't work,
examine the circuit boards for any sign of corrosion. Gently remove corrosion
with steel wool.

It's possible you got water inside the device and that caused corrosion. You may need to open the unit and carefully inspect & clean the circuit boards. Chris ...
