Hi Melissa,
What kind of leukemia do you have? I was diagnosed last February with CLL.
Your type of leukemia will affect your treatment options. Ultimately, it's a
difficult and very personal decision. The Leukemia and Lymphoma society (I
can't remember the url) is a good resource--my local chapter has special support
programs. I've also purchased a book--Alternative Medicine's Definitive Guide
to Cancer. I also have the (very thick) Alternative Medicine book. They're
easily purchased through Amazon.
Or maybe you want to go ahead with chemotherapy. Again, your options depend
on the type of leukemia. If you go to www.healthtalk.com you may still find
information from a talk given by Dr. Michael Keating on July 20--he's an expert
in the field. In that talk he discussed some alternative and complementary
treatments as well as new strides in the field. New discoveries are being made
all the time. Some new chemotherapy treatments are able to target only the
cancerous cells without destroying healthy cells.
After my diagnosis, I spent the first two weeks or so too stunned to think
things through. It will take time to let everything sink in. I learned quite a
bit simply by googling. Another resource you may be interested in if you want
to seek alternative treatments is www.cancure.com. There's quite a bit of
information on that site, including a listing of clinics throughout the
U.S.--though you'll need to follow-up because some of the information on clinics
is outdated.
The best thing I can tell is you is that I have met cancer survivors. I don't
know if I can call myself that yet. I actually have not had any treatment so
far. I have severe food allergies which need to be treated before I can address
the cancer. In fact, a good diet is very helpful for recovery.
I'm rambling a little, trying to think of any helpful information I can pass
on. I hope it helps. Please feel free to email me privately any tine.
